He originally is a fully domesticated dog, living a lavish and undisturbed lifestyle. However, this is all interrupted suddenly when he is kidnapped. He is taken away from his home and immediately put into strenuous labor and terrible working conditions. Buck at this point of the story, realizes the need of self determination in order to free himself from the evident chains now shackling him down. In order to do this, Buck has to trade in his domesticated lifestyle for a one that is much tougher and wild in nature. In this situation, London shows a clear distinction between the two lifestyles. As stated here, “The call of the wild evidently signifies the appeal of barbarian life over civilized life…” (CLC 260). Also, there have been new art pieces leading to a more articulate and appreciative world. In addition there have also been extreme triumphs. Individuals with disabilities overcome these everyday and are quite evident in the special olympics. Military officials overcome hopeless situations and eventually return home to their loved ones. Certain disadvantages people face can make situations seem dreary and generally abysmal. However, many people have overcome situations with a persistent mindset and hard work. These achievements and triumphs could not have been held without numerous efforts. In Jack London’s, The Call of the Wild, he perfectly illustrates this fact.
