What is an Effective Ad?

This is an assignment to be done individually.
You will each do an in-class, short (1 to 2 minutes), verbal presentation on Tuesday, 3 September.

Find an example of what you consider to be an effective ad. It can be a print ad in a newspaper or magazine; an online ad; a TV ad; an ad from a website or YouTube; a radio ad; or a billboard ad.

You must bring a copy of the ad to show it to the class. So if you want to use a TV ad or billboard, you must either find a copy of the ad somewhere online, or you must record it, or take a picture of the billboard. If the ad is on the radio, record it.

You must explain why you consider the ad to be effective, using the following criteria:

1. Be noticed – or your message is going nowhere. * Does your ad grab the viewer’s attention? How?

2. Know your audience – understand the cage * Who is your audience – is the ad targeted towards a general audience, or a specific audience, based on age, race, social class, family style, gender, culture, or region?

3. Be real – understand how your product intersects with people’s lives * Does your ad appeal to the viewer’s emotions? * Does the ad establish a strong positive, negative, or mixed tone that clearly advances its argument and the effect of that argument? * Is it is clear how the ad wants viewers to feel? and does the ad achieve the desired emotional effect?

4. Be truthful – believability is vital * Does your ad present specific factual claims with clear references to reliable sources.

5. Be clear – creativity should enhance, not obscure meaning * The best creativity shows things in a fresh light but in a way that makes people go ‘Aha’ – not ‘What the…?’ - does your ad do this? * Is the central issue clearly defined, and is the importance of this issue demonstrated? Does the ad make an argument that convinces with logic and evidence? Is the ad’s point of view presented strongly?

6. Be true to the brand – reflect the core values * Every piece of communication should reinforce what you want your brand to stand for –does your ad do this?

7. Be single-minded – one ad, one idea * Does the ad’s use of moving and still images, sounds, music, editing, and transitions together succeed in communicating ideas, organizing complex arguments, and creating a powerful dramatic effect?

Note:

* The seven criteria above are discussed in the article, Seven rules for effective advertising.

* Another excellent short article is, What Makes an Effective Ad?

* If you are searching for ads online, look at the sites listed on the page, Web Links.

Firstly the rock size and mass was measured to determine the density and bulk volume using an electronic ruler and mass balance. Then using the helium porosimeter the grain volume of each core plug sample was measured. Each of these measurements were repeated three times and then averaged for precision sake. The porosity was then calculated by subtracting the grain volume from the bulk volume, to determine the pore volume, and then dividing by the bulk volume. The porosity results for all the samples were reasonable except for sample 1 and 6 for which the porosity is calculated to be in negative % and make no logic. These possible reasons for these inaccurate results are that the group made high errors in reading the measurements or did the experiment in a wrong method. 2-Introduction For the storage of oil and gas in any reservoir rock presence of porosity is vital. However, the degree of porosity in any rock depends upon...

Strategic Management of Business Policy Formulation and Implementation Between Bangladesh and India

...Strategic Management of Business Policy Formulation and Implementation between Bangladesh and India Course Title: Strategic Management Course Code: MBA 512 Prepared for Prof: Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Ph.D. Visiting Professor of IUB Prepared by Mostafizur Rahman 1221544 Shamsher Ali 113060 Abstract The business relationship between India and Bangladesh is currently of special interest in both countries for a number of reasons. Firstly, there are urgent and longstanding concerns in Bangladesh arising from the perennial, large bilateral trade deficit with India, and from the large volumes of informal imports from India across the land border which avoid Bangladesh import duties. These concerns have been particularly acute on the Bangladesh side in the context of discussions between the two governments of the possibility of a bilateral free trade agreement along the lines of the India-Sri Lanka FTA. Secondly, even though (because of the disparity in the size of the two economies) India’s trading relationship with Bangladesh is much less significant for it than it is for Bangladesh, closer economic integration with Bangladesh is nevertheless seen as a very important way of reducing the economic and political isolation of the seven Indian eastern and north eastern states from the rest of the country. Finally, both countries have long shared common objectives for closer economic integration...

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE ~ BY STEPHEN COVEY THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE HABIT 1 : BE PROACTIVE Your life doesn't just "happen." Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results. Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are "response-able." They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn't, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather. All of these external forces act as stimuli that we respond to. Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power--you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive person...

The 8th Habit: from Effectiveness to Greatness

...The 8th Habit: From effectiveness to greatness Author(s): Publishers: Edition: ISBN: Reviewed by: Stephen Covey Simon & Schuster 2004 0743206827 Gill McKay, Director, Extensor Limited It is 18 years since Stephen Covey published his seminal work “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, which was a hugely impactful book, selling millions of copies across the globe. In that book, Dr Covey showed us how to become as effective as we possibly could be. In the 8th Habit, he opens up more potential for us all – by moving from “effectiveness to greatness”. The world today is different, with more challenge, ambiguity and complexity and while the 7 Habits form a strong basis upon which to start, it is this next step – the 8th Habit –that will take us to true fulfilment in what Covey describes as the age of the knowledge worker. I learned a lot from his previous books, particularly the 7 Habits, and approached the 8th Habit with real enthusiasm. Unfortunately I found it a much more difficult read which, although it contained some good tips and new and metaphors, did not deliver on its initial perceived promise. The book’s synopsis promises that The 8th Habit is the answer to the yearning for greatness, the organisation's imperative for significance and superior results, and the human’s search for its "voice". I believe there are some handy tips to be found in the book, but it is a much less intuitive read than his previous works. The book is divided into two sections...

7 Habits of Highly Effective People Book Summary

...7 Habits of Highly Effective People Book Summary Before going into the actual 7 habits, the author Steve Covey goes into few important concepts. Character Ethic (good) There are basic principles of effective living and people can only experience true success and enduring happines as they learn and integrate these principles into their basic character. Personality Ethic (not so good) It is manipulative, deceptive, encouraging people to use techniques to get other people to like them. Personality ethic is illusory and deceptive and trying to get high quality results with its techniques and quick fixes – not effective at all. Paradigm The book talks a lot about paradigm shifts and I remember having to look it up in the dictionary to find the true meaning of it; paradigm meaning: model, theory, perception, assumption, the way we see world. Conditioning affects our perceptions/paradigms (old/young lady drawing example in the book worth checking out). We see the world not as it is but as ‘we are’ through our paradigms. Different people can have different views and still both be correct. The more aware we are of our basic paradigms the more we can examine/test them against reality, listen to others and be open to their perceptions getting a larger picture and far more objective view. Paradigm shifts move us from one way of seeing the world to another. They influence our relationship with others. Not all are good. If we want to make relatively minor changes in our lives we...

...The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a popular book, published by Simon & Schuster, and written by Stephen R Covey.  It provides a useful, sequential framework for understanding much about the process of Personal Development. Many highly successful people seem to have naturally developed these principles of effectiveness. Stephen Covey's principled approach is not a quick-fix prescription for personal growth. But, says Covey, if you work hard at acquiring these principles, if you learn them well, think about them deeply and teach them to others, they will eventually become internalized. They will lead to fundamental change because they will affect who you are - your character - for the better. Your personality was formed as the result of specific behaviors you internalized as you grew up. These behaviors are not things we need to think about, they represent little success strategies or ways of coping with life that we have found to be helpful. If you take a look at what Seneca said about human character, you will see how acquiring new habits leads to a fundamental change of character. Sow a thought, reap an action Sow action, reap a habit Sow a habit, reap a character Sow a character, reap a destiny.                            - Seneca   [pic]  Stephen Covey Stephen Covey was born in 1932. He lives with his wife, Sandra, and their family in Utah; in the Rocky Mountains. Covey achieved international acclaim, and is perhaps best known, for his self-help...
