Effective Human Service Professionals and Wellness Strategies Human services relate to a variety of delivery systems such as education, mental health services, social welfare, and other forms of healthcare. Human service professional may help client’s access services or may provide services directly to clients. Human service professionals also manage agencies that provide these services. They are involved in advocacy and policy development because of their engagement with human conditions. The academic discipline of human services educate these professionals at the associate, bachelor’s, and graduate levels and studies how public policies and delivery systems influence service users. Working in human service professions can call for special efforts and require professionals with skills and characteristics that make them effective. Flexibility “allows human services professionals to shift their perspectives on the nature of helping, their views of the client and the client’s problems, and their preferred intervention” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, p. 172). Professionals are willing to modify, abandon, or reconsider their approaches to helping when they meet unexpected situations. Flexibility is an important characteristic as human service professionals work with people representing different cultural and ethnic groups. Empathy is “acceptance of another person” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, p. 171). This characteristic allows the human service professional to experience a feeling or see a situation from the perspective of the client. This characteristic would be easier for professionals who have had similar experiences to those of their clients. Empathy is important because it allows you to see things from the client’s perspective and be able to sympathize with their feelings. Responsibility/Commitment is “feeling a responsibility or commitment to improve the well-being of others” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, p. 171). This means attending to the needs of clients and delivering high-quality services. Human service professionals act in the best interest of their clients and do so to the very best of their ability. Responsibility/Commitment is important because human service professionals have to follow a set of ethical standards or code of ethics to display to the client what to expect from the professional. Honesty is the biggest expectation of the client because they expect the professional to be honest in practicing only what they are trained to do or when answering questions. In the three characteristics described, I excel in flexibility and responsibility/commitment because I am an honest person, I always try to improve the well-being of others, and I always focus on the client and the client’s problems. I need improvement and further development in the characteristic of empathy. I am very accepting of others, however, it is kind of challenging for me to place myself in their shoes and experience a feeling or see a situation from their perspective. I also display the characteristics of self-awareness, the ability to communicate, confidentiality, self-determination, acceptance, tolerance, and respect for individuality. Everyone has room for improvement but it is up to the individuals to want to improve and utilize the proper resources. Two wellness strategies that might help prevent burnout and/or stress for you as a human service profession is support from coworkers and promotions. Receiving support form coworkers can reassure a professional that they are doing a great job and they are needed to make a difference in someone life. A coworker can offer encouraging words. Knowing that promotions are available, this will make the professionals want to work harder and not become stressed or burnout. These wellness strategies can be applied in the human service field by forming coworkers support groups and by placing promotion opportunities on a board that is visible to all professionals. “Staff burnout is debilitating to workers, costly to agencies, and detrimental to clients” (Shinn, Morch, & Chestnut, 1984, p. 864) so there should be many wellness strategies that is offered by the agency to prevent staff burnout. In conclusion, human service professionals may help client’s access services or may provide services directly to clients. Working in the human service profession can call for special efforts and require professionals with skills and characteristics that make them effective. They are involved in advocacy and policy development because of their engagement with human conditions.
