Effective Online Learning

Everyone has a different learning style, which makes learning online very different from the traditional brick and mortar environment. A brick and mortar environment is a controlled environment in which an instructor is available to answer any of the questions that their students may have, whereas online the student must email their instructor and wait for their response. There also is less peer to peer interaction in an online course to try and solve the problem and gain the solutions. In an online course, the student may also have distractions such as family, work and the many other activities of their daily living; however, I believe that all of these challenges can be overcome and effective online learning can be achieved by practicing organization, communication, and time management. To be a successful online learner, I will have to be very organized and will have to ensure that my priorities are in order. My family of course is first followed by work and then school. I will have to look at my schedule and ensure that there is time blocked out to study. Beings that I get distracted very easily, I will have to ensure that I am in a place where it is quiet and where I can be by myself. I will use my laptop to do all of my online assignments upstairs in my house so that I will easily be able to remove myself of all distractions, i.e. husband, baby, and television. I will ensure that I am staying on track in the class by utilizing the syllabus, which will help me on which assignments need to be completed, from which class, and also which assignment needs to be completed first. There will be times that I will have to accept that I will be unable to ensure that I get all of my assignments in on their due dates. If and when this happens, I will need to make sure that I have communicated effectively with my instructor. This will give them a chance to be able to provide alternatives to help me meet the requirements of the assignment and the overall course and will also allow the instructor to help answer all questions to ensure that the assignment is completed correctly. This will allow me to not have to improvise and put me at risk for receiving a poor grade. I will also utilize all the student support services that Columbia Southern University offers and communicate each issue to the appropriate department. Time management is the key to my success as an online student. As a soon to be Sergeant First Class in the United States Army and working as a Surgical Technician in not only the Combat Support Hospital, but also in the busy medical center. I work long days that start at 6:30 am and end most days at 6:00 pm. I will need to schedule my time to do my school work on the weekends or any down time throughout my day. I am also married with a nine month old son, so time is something that I do not have an abundance of. I will have to maximize every minute of my day to ensure my success. I have experience with online schooling and feel it is the best option for me at this time. It allows me to work full time and still pursue a higher education. I have the discipline and motivation that is needed to be a successful online learner. I feel very comfortable with my abilities to be organized, communicate effectively, and manage my time, in which may ultimately result in the successful completion of my Master’s degree program.

Balancing multiple obligations, struggles with adapting to the online learning processes and environment, and internal battles are just a few of the issues that online graduate students are likely to face. Effective Study Skills Are the Sole Foundation of a Sound Education

...PORTFOLIO ESSAY: Module 1 EFFECTIVE STUDY SKILLS ARE THE SOLE FOUNDATION OF A SOUND EDUCATION? This essay will define what study skills are and how these aid learning. Issues relating to difficulties in adapting study skills will be discussed, and how effective study skills can give foundation to a successful education and future. Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning (Wikipedia, 2012). Anderson (2002), describes study skills as processes of meta-cognition, which is self-awareness of one’s thinking and learning. Learners who are able to step back and monitor their thinking and learning are able to use strategies for finding out or figuring out what they need to do. These strategies help students organize, process, and use information effectively (Kerka, 2007). Petty (2002), states that most study skills teaching have positive effects, but some skills work better than others. Research shows that students who are strategic learners for example who know there are multiple ways to do things have increased self-esteem, become more responsible, improve completion and accuracy of their work, and are more engaged in learning, also improving their performance (Beckman, 2002). Higher education expects students to have the maturity to work on their own for longer, this could feel as though study lacks structure which could be...
