Chapter 1
The Problem and its Background
Introduction
Nowadays, people enjoy life more through the use of what we called “technology”. As we all know, technology is said to be a way of sharing information. It blooms by the incredible intelligence and perspective ideologies of many scientist. Some of them are Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell who both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electrically, a telephone. This wire-based electrical system is still now a very useful gadget people use on how to communicate with others. There is also what we called cell phone which was invented by Doctor Martin Cooper. Same as telephone, it can also use as a way of communicating but not only through calling but as well as sending messages through texting. Since computer and internet also becomes a big contribution in technology, people also interact through email. Indeed, the entrance of technology in the whole wide world is a huge success that makes life easier, pleasurable and faster. Just like Jacklyn Dephoff said, “technology is continually developing a system of information processing aimed at providin better ways of living.” According to Wenbin Nah, technology has brought forth a revolutionary transformation in the way we communicate with each other. This has definitely influenced interpersonal communication in many ways, but not only in positive but as well as in negative ways. Simple messages which used to be delivered face-to-face are now being sent through impersonal means such as email.
This has effectively reduced socialization within the office, thus contributing to the weakening of bonds within the workplace. (Wenbin, 2008)
Just like the online teaching wherein a teacher only teaches his or her students through online internet can also cause detachment and unsureness if the students really learn the lesson well due to the fact that the teacher could not be able to facilitate the learning process. This has reduced the communication between two people due to the lack of quality time spend together. The bond is weakened as compared with previous generations and this has a profound impact on society as a whole. In conclusion, we are now more connected in today's globalized world, but are ironically more isolated from our friends and family as a result of the new technologies from the information age. The ease of communication may have been improved but our lives have become more impersonal as a result. Technology has indeed made tremendous impact on society as well as on interpersonal communication. (Wenbin, 2008) It has been observed that homes, schools and the whole community should be aware of the possible effects that technology brings. This study will educate people most especially those who was always involved in using technology to become careful and not to let technology run their lives but just serves as a tool to make communication easier.
