People then and now couldn’t be what they are without food culture. The idea that society just came to be and that their lives weren’t focused around food is incomprehensible. But the thing is, our food culture is an evolved and refined version of theirs from back then. You can’t have so many similarities between two cultures without a common link. But food culture covers a wide array of things from table manners to the cooks themselves. So, our food culture today isn’t anything new, it’s just had time to evolve and work applied to be refined. My goal in this paper is to give you a view of the food culture surrounding the Elizabethan era and how it compares to ours now. To start I will begin the topic of table manners and utensil usage. But diets have had the most change. Back then most of their drinks were fermented and consisted of elements other than water. Since their water was dirty and disgusting they couldn’t drink for fear of plague and other diseases. So, they drank a lot of beer and ale. Ale is an alcoholic drink and was consumed by everyone. Beer was also commonly found, while the wine was found only with the nobles and the rich. But one thing was common a diet that elevated meat. The poor had a lot of soups and broths because they were cheap and they could afford the vegetables but the meats were expensive. The rich had a lot of meats and breads but less vegetables because they thought that vegetables were uncouth due to their underground origin. A common poor man’s meal was bisket cakes and salted or pickled meat. It was easy to make and hearty while still being easy to transport and long lasting. But one thing food diets back then relied on was accessibility and how long their food could stay from spoiling. Food names have changed most in their spellings and pronunciation. For instance biscuits versus biskets. The only thing that changes is the spelling. They both sound the same. Other foods such as nuts and vegetables have changed the same in terms of spelling. These are the cooks. Cooks have changed a lot from then and now. If you look closely, cooks back then were trained but not educated on their craft. Also, cooks back then were only able to make one type of cuisine, the one of their country or province. They only cooked what the king wanted and what his guests wanted. Cooks were also trained in a different way. Cooks of the olden days were trained through apprenticeship. This means they studied under a master and when he died he took over the job as master cook. Finally, cooks of the olden days were only in taverns, pubs, and in the nobility’s/royalty’s homes. Cooks back then were a lot dirtier than ours now. They washed their hands less, cleaned their clothes less, and weren’t as safe in their practices of food prep. Also, their garbage disposal was less than friendly as they just threw it out of the area and had someone collect it. The cooks also were found in only certain places versus today cooks can be found almost anywhere. But the cooks of now and then were also very similar. Both sets of cooks had to entertain and please people through their food. They also were always trying to invent new ways in which they could appease their audience.
