In Emily Lockhart’s book, We Were Liars, Cadence Sinclair is the product of high social class. Her family comes together on a secluded island every summer to be isolated from reality. However, unlike the stereotypical female, Cadence’s character delves into problems which depict her as fully human. Throughout Cady’s experiences with pain, depression, and detachment from the people in her life, her problems go far beyond the minimal expectations of a rich, entitled female character.
The novel follows the lives of four teenagers who meet every summer in a most luxurious lifestyle surrounded by family and carefree attitudes. This overly-relaxed environment eventually leads to a tragic accident which results in Cady losing her memory of what happened
