Objective: If 21st century literacy means we ‘read’ more than books, then what does ‘text’ now mean?

Plan: 1. Define a ‘text’ in a traditional sense and again in a 21st century literacy sense 2. Watch Ted Talk: Rives’s “Mixed Emoticons” http://www.google.com.hk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Rives+Mixed+Emoticons+Ted+Talks&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 3. After watching, discuss whether emoticons are text or simply supporting pictures to Rives’s script.

Assignment: Write/design (?) your own emoticon story, with a beginning, middle and end on Power point slides. (Put the entire story on the first slide, then divide up the story to ‘match’ your narrative / script in subsequent slides) Your story may not contain any words in it -- HOWEVER, you must also prepare a script with which to tell the story as we watch your emoticon story. This script should be on the bottom of the relevant powerpoint slide . **You should also record an audio of your narrative (go to Insert, Audio, Record Audio. Note you must do so for each slide and there is no rewind – so you record until you get it right! We then have the option to activate the audio or note when we watch your story. Be prepared to present ‘live’ OR with audio depending on our time!)

Aim for 1-1.5 minutes script (see rubric for other directions)

Read the Internet article, All About Emoticons and consider these discussion questions. These may simply inform your emoticon story OR you might choose one (or more) as a journal entry.
