Empathy-altruism hypothesis
Empathy-altruism hypothesis is a prosocial behavior that states people are motivated to act in an altruism manner by the empathy they feel for others. Altruism is defined as a true desire to help those in need and expect nothing in return, not even satisfaction. Empathy is defined as a feeling of understanding the experience that another being is facing. Empathy-altruism hypothesis has a very important significance to American culture as well as cultures around the world because we all should strive towards altruism motivation to ensure our own survival in the future.
Empathy has different elements and different levels dependent upon the situation and feelings felt by the observer. If the observer has empathy towards the observed, and not only feel what they are experiencing, but understand what they are experiencing then the observer is experiencing the two elements of empathy. A person with a high level of empathy would be an example of the empathy-altruism hypothesis. A person with a low level of empathy would be considered selfish. “Empathy is a vicarious emotional experience in which you feel and understand what another person feels.” (Bell) Empathy is a natural feeling that most people experience, it is if they choose to embrace this feeling and act upon it that determines their individual level and whether it will trigger altruism motivation. Altruism is a desire to help other people without a sense of obligation and to expect nothing in return. Everyday many people have altruism motivation; whether they drop off a fax to a coworker or perform the Heimlich maneuver on a choking stranger and do not have any expectations from the recipient, or perhaps they expect a thank you. “Remember, however, that pure altruism involves true selflessness. While all altruistic acts are prosocial, not all prosocial behaviors are completely altruistic.” (Cherry) True altruism is very hard to achieve as there is no rewards and only benefits for the recipient as even a sense of satisfaction is considered a reward.
The empathy-altruism hypothesis can even be used to explain why people chose certain professions. Certain individuals display empathy driven altruism motivation more than others and choose to turn this into a career. “Any attempt to help a person in need is more likely to be beneficial if one has an accurate perception of the other’s need. So it is not surprising that clinicians, whose primary concern is to help their clients, tend to emphasize accurate perception of a client’s feelings rather than other-oriented feeling for the client.” (Bell) The majority of clinicians have high levels of empathy and display an understanding of the elements as well.
Altruism and morality are very similar in definition and often go hand in hand. When someone displays a high level of morality, then they usually display altruism mannerisms and a high level of empathy as well. Sometimes people need a nudge in the right direction to be reminded of their level of empathy and their altruism motivation within themselves. This could be obtained by broadening our audience and enlightening them on empathy-altruism hypothesis. We need for people to embrace and act upon their feelings of empathy and trigger altruism motivation to ensure the survival of our future. Works cited

The opposing side is presented by Cialdini (et. Al, 1987) concludes that when individuals offer aid to others, they are doing so for a personal gain of some kind. The articles discussed by Nier, (2009) share opinions from experts on both sides of this issue and provide a foundation upon which to base one’s own decision with regard to true altruism. ...Altruism is defined as the desire to help another person even if it involves a cost to the helper. The evolutionary view of altruism involves the ideas of kin selection and, the norm of reciprocity. Kin selection suggests that we are more likely to help those related to us, and the norm reciprocity proposes that we will help others if we expect them to return the help in the future. I believe these two concepts show a great unconscious motivator for altruism. The next more conscious part of altruism is the how much will it cost and reward the person who will help as discussed by the social exchange theory. And the final influence is the empathy-altruism hypothesis, which states that when we feel empathy for a person, we will help a person for purely altruistic reasons, regardless of what we have to gain. The issue of altruism is complicated by the lack of agreement about many aspects of it, including its very definition.
