Introduction Each week in HCDE 210 the class was taught of a real world implementation of HCDE in lecture and then about a basic HCDE building block in studio. To relate these two meeting times, the class was assigned to make connections of the topics covered in lecture to those covered in studio. In my connection essay, I will address how Andrew Berry’s work empowering patients connects to my usability test, how Dianne Hendricks’ accessible work with DayTracker connects to my physical computing sprint, and finally how Kelly Franznick’s work with privacy connects to my user research sprint.

From this statement, the participants most likely felt more at ease, though not completely. The interaction between the test facilitator and the participants was not the most natural. To improve this, incorporating more personable techniques (e.g., offering a more thorough introduction, asking questions about the participants’ day, etc…) into our test would have benefited our results by producing more authentic reactions from the participants. Empowering participants is a tool to accomplish a better study and may promote confidence within the participants to do or try something new. I feel as though by empowering our participants my group and I were able to obtain a better understanding of responsible HCD practice and how empowerment can greatly affect a study’s results. In Berry’s case his participants may go forth and advocate for their disease and be more open to share their experience. Similarly, in our test, the participants may feel confident alarm clock in the future. Berry’s project provides an excellent model of responsible practice in HCD, by providing his participants with confidence and empowerment, and will serve as an example for future usability tests for beginners and experts in the …show more content…
Recording detailed notes of interactions between people would be considered an invasion of privacy by the standards of most. Ethically, it would have been wise to have received informed consent from the people that I observed, similar to Franznick. Though, by giving people the knowledge of my study, I could have compromised the authenticity of their interactions. By considering this, I satisfy a different side of responsible practice: reflexivity. Being reflexive in a study is important because it aids the researcher in understanding the impact they have on the results. Franznick did not address reflexivity directly, though he must have understood his position as a researcher and how his interactions with the participants may have altered results. Though reflexivity is important to carrying out work in HCD, careful privacy measures should always be considered. Taking into account ethical considerations, such as privacy, is vital to any and all projects that involve other participants. For instance, Franznick was able to execute his Data Loggers project by creating an ethical relationship with his participants. It is the goal of all people in the HCD field to utilize informed consent and any other ethical measures that can be taken to protect the privacy of study’s participants. These four conditions accounted for significant variation in the levels of employee empowerment in four star hotels in Jordan.
