Question 1: Phonetics and phonology
As a general way of distinguishing between the two disciplinary areas, phonology can be perceived as investigating sounds as an abstract system, whereas phonetics focuses on the actual sounds as they are spoken by specific individuals during particular speech events.

Question 2: Grammar and syntax
a) Identify the verb tense forms used in each of the texts.
In text 5;16 they use a non-fiction explanation, so this falls under the present tense verb. So this means that it is happening NOW.
b) Compare the way in which each writer uses the verb tenses.
In text 5:16 they use the now verb in text 5:17 they use the past that mostly ends in-end. The comparison is well-non-fiction versus prose-fiction. Being in the now verb, the present to going to the past tense.
c) Briefly explain why the writers have chosen the tenses you have identified.
To explain the necessity of the text, if you don’t use the verbs like these writers did it would change the whole meaning of the text. The present verb being used to show what is a conservation area were the prose fiction is present in second text.

Question 3: Morphology; Language meaning and use
a) purpose of the text is to convince people that paying tax is the right thing to do , in this case it was the tax payers money that saved Liezl and Duwayne‟s lives. The story refers to the near death experience that Liezl and Duwayne experienced if it wasn‟t for the rescue services (of which tax payers pay for) Liezl and Duwayne might not have been alive.
“„It‟s my birthday today and if it weren‟t for the rescue operation I wouldn‟t be here today. I want to thank the taxpayers for giving me back my birthday,‟ said a grateful Liezl.”
b) Yes, people are given a scenario, a real life event and uses this event to emphasise how important services like defence and security services are to protect South Africa and its citizens.
However without taxes being paid it will not be possible. Thanks to our services funded by tax payer‟s money, a lot of people was saved.
(c) (i) Chopper: Different word used to describe a helicopter
Scrambled: Different word used to describe how people rush to accomplish something or to reach a destination very quickly.
(ii)

Chopper: Dave just bought himself a brand new chopper motorcycle.
Scrambled: Dave did not study for the exam and found himself completely completely scrambled when it came to answer the questions.
