How lucky you are

The writer, Debi Alper, has written the story, how lucky you are, in 2010. The story is about a boy named max and a girl named Ishraqi. Max is an English boy, who lives in London. One day he decides to bunk school and goes to sit in front of the UK Borders Agency Building in Croydon Town Centre. While sitting there, he rolls the thinnest possible fag, when suddenly a girl falls on to his lap. His first reaction is to tell her to watch it, whilst yelling at her. When he then realises her beauty, his tone changes and he starts being nice. Max feels that he wants to converse with her, and asks her if she is bunking class too. Instead he finds out that she is going to a meeting in the Borders Agency Building. She tells him her name, Ishraqi, and her story. The story about why she is in London, instead of home in Iran. Ishraqi is accompanied by alexsa, who works in a refugee camp as a support worker.
Meanwhile Ishraqi and max are chatting Alexsa tells that their meeting has been moved, and they will have to wait for a couple of hours. That’s when max takes a step and asks if Ishraqi would like a tour in London. She agrees and they end up having a great time and max even get a kiss. In the end when they return to the building Ishraqi goes in and max waits outside the building for 2 hours. At last he spots Alexsa coming out of the building without Ishraqi by her side. She tells him, that they are sending Ishraqi back to Iran, and there’s nothing left for her to do.

The Main character in this story is Max. In the beginning he seems like a depressed boy, who smokes, bunks school and does negative stuff in general. When he meets Ishraqi it seems like he grows as a person and becomes much happier. He starts to appreciate the fact that he has a mother beside him, and doesn’t mind her lecturing him again. That’s actually a big growth, considering the fact that he used to fight with her whenever she told him to become responsible and so on. Max’s father left him and his mother; therefore he lives with his mother alone. As mentioned before he starts out as a boy who doesn’t care about anything. Doesn’t care about school or his mother. He smokes something called fags, which are cigarettes you roll by yourself. He tells us that he used to be a very enthusiastic boy and he really looked forward to begin in a new school. Obviosly it wasn’t as he expected, when he starts bunking classes
I would consider Ishraq as another main character, or a really important secondary character, when she is the one who makes max grow in this way. She is also an important part of it and an important part of max’s life. Max describes her as a fit girl with natural black hair. Not like the emo types he usually goes for.
Ishraqi has travelled from Iran to London, and has been living in London for a year and a half. She went to school in London and everything was actually going really well for her, before she was sent back to Iran. She doesn’t know where her parents are, and when she returns to Iran her life may be at risk. It looks as if she is not really religious, because in Iran she used to be all covered up, and when she doesn’t do that in London, it’s a sign that she hasn’t held on to her culture and religion.
The secondary characters are Alexsa and Max’s mother. Max’s mother loves him and wishes all the best for her son, which is why she always lectures him. The fact that Alexsa came out disappointed and sad from the building also tells us that she really cared about Ishraqi.
The story is told in a third-person narrator. The narrator sees everything from outside, and is an all-knowing narrator. He knows every detail of their conversations and he knows what max is thinking. For example when Ishraqi and max is going to hang out together, it says, “max quite liked the idea of acting like a tour guide”. That indicates that the narrator knows his thoughts.
The story takes place in London. London is a big city with big opportunities. Regardless of that, it looks really grey for Ishraqi. In the story while she is looking out a window she says, “it is so grey.. no trees and not even much sky with all these building”. Everything is looking dark for her, and already when you read that sentence, you get the feeling that something bad is going to take place.
This is where the environment gets its role in the text. Because not much later, we find out that Ishraqi is going to be sent back to Iran. I think that Ishraqi actually wasn’t feeling well mentally, she was scared and therefore everything also looked grey. And that the buildings were covering the sky means that there would not be any freedom for Ishraqi. Everything was closed on her.
The first sentence in the story shows us that the whole story is a flashback. “if it wasn’t for the photo on his mobile, Max would have no prof that he’d met Ishraqi in real life” . After that sentence the whole story about the two begins. The story is written in past tense, and the whole text is an example of that. The Story has a scenic technique, and it seems like we are very close to what’s going on.
Max seems like he has an inner conflict with him self. And the conflict is at last, when Ishraqi suddenly is out of his life.
I think the main theme here is happiness and sadness. Good and bad. The story shows us, that before the bad comes the good. And after the good, will come bad. It shows us that life has ups and downs and you need to just live with that.
At least she had something good to remember.
