'Enough,'' a jarring thriller packed to the gills with cheap shocks, suggests the emergence of a new Hollywood subgenre: the male yuppie horror film. The unspoken premise behind it suggests that a new generation of cold young men has arisen who are so obsessed with fattening their portfolios and chiseling their abs that they have forgotten to grow souls. And yes, that premise probably contains a tiny grain of truth.

Out of this grain, however, the movie has conceived a caricature even more monstrous than Glenn Close's voracious Medusa in ''Fatal Attraction.'' On a certain tit-for-tat level, ''Enough'' might even be seen as a feminist revenge for the stereotyping in ''Fatal Attraction,'' even though both films were written and directed by men.

The movie, which opens today nationwide, also exploits an ugly undercurrent of class warfare. Its star, Jennifer Lopez, plays a spunky working-class woman suckered into marriage with a rich yuppie master of the universe who brutally abuses her. In the movie's climax, she faces down her husband in one-on-one combat, armed with brass knuckles and fortified by a crash course in martial arts.

Will honest working-class pluck and self-reliance triumph over spoiled upper-class privilege? You don't have to ask. Throughout, Ms. Lopez holds the screen in a star performance that has less to do with acting than with embodying a forceful, streetwise woman who stands up for herself.

The movie's yuppie monster, versions of which you may have already met in ''Sleeping With the Enemy'' and ''American Psycho,'' is a handsome, homicidal rageoholic and control freak named Mitch (Billy Campbell), who operates with an unlimited sense of personal entitlement. A successful contractor, he enters the life of Slim (Ms. Lopez), a tough-talking waitress, like a toxic Prince Charming and sweeps her off her feet in an elaborate scam cooked up with his best friend to portray himself as a rescuer. Virtually overnight, Slim leaves behind her daily grind of balancing trays and lands ecstatically in her prince's hand-picked palace.

The grindingly assaultive melodrama makes only token nods to realism. For a certified control freak, Mitch seems to be a preposterously impulsive purchaser of real estate.

Upon spotting his Southern California dream house, he knocks on the door, whips out a checkbook and without even looking inside makes the owner an offer he would be crazy to refuse. This grandiose gesture resonates later when Mitch harshly announces to his wife that he always gets what he wants, emphasizing the always.

After a period of seemingly perfect bliss, during which Slim has given birth to a darling little daughter, Gracie (Tessa Allen), signs of trouble appear when Mitch turns down his wife's offer to join him in the shower. In a movie that doesn't know the meaning of the word subtle, we immediately sense that he is grooming himself for an extramarital tryst. Some elementary cell-phone sleuthing reveals that he is having an affair.

But when Slim confronts Mitch, he is arrogantly unrepentant. Men and women are different, he declares. Although he loves Slim, he requires other women too.

Since he makes the money in the family, he adds, he gets to make the rules, and there's nothing she can do to stop him. When Slim threatens to walk out, Mitch viciously strikes her and warns that he will never let her or his daughter go. At this point, ''Enough'' becomes a chase movie in which Slim flees the house and eventually assumes another identity, moving first to Seattle, where she stays with Joe (Dan Futterman), a gentle ex-boyfriend, and then to Michigan. As she makes her way around the country, the movie purports to offer advice to battered wives. Most of it is very grim, and I wouldn't trust it for a second.

The movie also offers an explanation for Slim's choice of a husband. An adopted child, she tracks down her biological father in Seattle to ask him for financial help. He turns out to be just like Mitch, only 25 years older. As for Joe, who might have emerged as a hero in another version of the story, the movie baldly states that the gentle, handsome, nurturing friend wasn't enough of a man in bed to make Slim happy. Even Joe cheerfully admits it.

''Enough'' has a certain internal logic. Its wife-battering scenes, which had the preview audience gasping at their brutality, characterize the movie's head-banging aesthetic, if aesthetic is the right word. Through stealthy camera movements and an abrasively jumpy soundtrack, ''Enough'' does a better job than most movies of sustaining a mood of palpable physical menace, then confirming your worst fears. In a particularly harrowing scene, two thugs, hired by Mitch and posing as F.B.I. agents, methodically trash Joe's apartment while Slim and Gracie, hidden away, cower in terror.

In the end you have to wonder why the highly reputed director Michael Apted (''Coal Miner's Daughter'') and the gifted screenwriter Nicholas Kazan (''Reversal of Fortune'') chose to go slumming in territory like this. They must have been offered wads of money to do the dirty job.

''Enough'' is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned) for sexual situations, profanity and sickening scenes of domestic violence.

..."Enough" Remember those time we had The good, the happy and sad I never thought we got around When things went tumbling down I guess we got lonely There was no one else for us to turn to ‘Cause I don’t need you any longer ‘cause now I’m stronger Enough no more It’s time for you to be on your way Time’s up. Get out No need for us to figure it out Let go. Move on. It’s time to go our separate ways Enough be gone The hurt and pain will only remain Stop tryin’ to call me Stop messin’ with my mind Oh why can’t you see? That there’s nothing else you will find ‘cause we’ll only keep on fighting And our hearts will only keep on hurting Tell me who are we fooling with our selfish pride So… Enough no more It’s time for you to be on your way Time’s up. Get out No need for us to figure it out Let go. Move on. It’s time to go our separate ways Enough be gone The hurt and pain will only remain Stay away – that’s the only way It’s gonna get better Till the clouds settle Find a way – for our hearts to be sober And someday I hope and I pray Maybe we could be good friends Take a turn at this dead end This is enough Yeah we fuss and fight What a damage we’ve done And I knew that we ain’t gon’ make it right Looking at the mirror This body and mind is wasted And now I just feel so ashamed to feel like I’ve be chasing The love I never thought would last I guess that was the past I remember all the memories and things we used to have ...

Affordable ($250)for people of a variety of economic classes. 6 Weakness 1. From 1996-2004, Nintendo had issues with 3 rd party companies. 3 rd party companies are responsible for release nearly 90% of the video games for a game system. During those years, Nintendo, for whatever reason, was limiting what games it would allow 3 rd companies to release on their game systems. The only explainable reason for this limitation was to reduce game related violence. Since 2004, it has fixed many of those issues it had with most of the 3 rd party companies. This has in turn effected the amount of 3 rd party game support for the Wii. 2. Due to the failure of the Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo 64 during those 8 years, they chose to be more cautious when producing Nintendo Wii's. They couldn't foresee the success that the Nintendo Wii would have, and therefore produced too few Wii's compared to the current demand. 3. Nintendo always tries to keep video games affordable. Nintendo’s Wii starting price was $250, and Sony’s Playstation 3 that released within the same month had a price of $599. Even though Nintendo has sold more Wii units than Sony’s Playstation 3, there is still some notable complaints from hardcore gamer consumers. The big difference between the two game systems is graphics...

When Is Enough Really Enough

...When is Enough Really Enough I was inspired by John Updike because he expresses his peculiar passion for golf bliss for golf was a unique way he takes us through his passion not telling you why he likes it but how it is played and the aspects that make it so unique. Most people do not think about when thinking about all the little details involved in a passion. His since of style along with detail for every key component and concept that goes into the game is what makes his writing so much different for all the other I have read. For a long time I never knew that one person could change your life in such a way that it shapes your future. I never knew such a passion for running could be ignited by something that you never thought or saw yourself doing and by someone you could only know for a year. It was not until I was twelve and in junior high school that I found a peculiar joy with running track. Running hurdles was the most difficult of all the runs. Having to accurately time your jump and leg swing in order to clear the hurdle and make sure you did not lose any speed or hit the person next you presented a great degree difficulty. The size of the lanes always felt insufficient to the size of the hurdle, which made you feel that you were going to plummet. The most invigorating feeling was when you heard the popping of the starting gun, and then your heart would race as the sound ignites your senses and adrenaline running through your veins. Although hurdles were one of...

...Of all the characters that I’ve “met” through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be. They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them. I, too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life. Both Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life. As an Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham, but soon I’ll be entering the adult world, a world in which I’m not yet prepared to lead. I’m quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather, 40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving. I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families. Often when his bank could not justify a...

Is a Scholarship Enough

...Is a Scholarship Enough? There are approximately 319 million people living in the United States, but there are approximately 482 million people in China that work in sweatshops. These people make less than two dollars a day. Often times hundreds of people are working in one big room, smells of sweat, tears, and a low sense of moral fill the air. We are talking about hard working people that work hard for their money, but get treated so poorly. A hardworking man goes and clocks in to make a better future for himself, and he has enough to barely get by on a day to day basis. This is just inhumane and coldhearted. It is easy for us to look down on China for doing this to their people, however; we treat our student athletes in the same manner. These student athletes struggle daily with the same problem. Juggling at least twelve hours of credits, with at least ten hours of practice a week, not including games. How can a student athlete possibly have time for a job? These students barely have enough time to study. Practice is often times long and hard, and once that is over with it is time to study or do homework. Sleep? As a student athlete there is no such thing as sleep. Sleep is just one of the thousands of things college athletes have to worry about. Also, earning extra money can be an almost impossible feat with the lack of extra time in a week. In a paraphrase of a famous rapper named Jay Z, “College athletes have 99 problems, and money is one.” When it comes to college, people...

Love Is Not Enough

...in his bed for an entire day. Thirty-five years later, Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails wrote a song called “Love is Not Enough.” Reznor, despite being famous for his shocking stage performances and his grotesque and disturbing videos, got clean from all drugs and alcohol, married one woman, had two children with her, and then cancelled entire albums and tours so that he could stay home and be a good husband and father. One of these two men had a clear and realistic understanding of love. One of them did not. One of these men idealized love as the solution to all of his problems. One of them did not. One of these men was probably a narcissistic asshole. One of them was not. In our culture, many of us idealize love. We see it as some lofty cure-all for all of life’s problems. Our movies and our stories and our history all celebrate it as life’s ultimate goal, the final solution for all of our pain and struggle. And because we idealize love, we overestimate it. As a result, our relationships pay a price. When we believe that “all we need is love,” then like Lennon, we’re more likely to ignore fundamental values such as respect, humility and commitment towards the people we care about. After all, if love solves everything, then why bother with all the other stuff — all of the hard stuff? But if, like Reznor, we believe that “love is not enough,” then we understand that healthy relationships require more than pure emotion or lofty passions. We understand that there are...

Pressure on Young Women

...For Girls. It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too: Pressure on Young Women For young women today there seems to be enormous pressure to be beyond perfect. Why as a society do we place these kinds of pressures on our children? A good example is the story “For Girls, It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too” by Sara Rimer. It focuses on two amazing teen girls Esther and Colby who have to face many issues that many young women today have to confront now as well as the stress it entails. Esther and Colby learn right from the start that they have to be perfect during every waking hour and not waste anytime. The girl’s lives are influenced by their parent’s desires and the opinions of their peers. They don’t even think of themselves. Today’s amazing girls are facing pressure from their parents, as well as images they see on T.V., in magazines, as well as everywhere they look. Society pressures young women to be smart, sexy, and athletic. Sara Rimer writes; “If you are free to be everything, you are also expected to be everything” (page 2). At one time young women were viewed as the lesser sex; and were expected to become obedient wives and good mothers. They weren’t expected to go to or even complete their schooling. It was viewed as a waste of time. As time passed women started to become able to receive an education, vote, and have a job outside of the home. Society then started expecting more out of young women. The young women today have to become the amazing girl’s...

...dreaming of future possibilities and ways of expressing himself only to have his realistic expectations crash down on him and diminish his thoughts of potential greatness. Keating sees through Todd’s fear and first makes him yawp, and later makes him say whatever comes to mind. This is the beginning of the change in Todd. “I close my eyes and this image floats beside me The sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brains His hands reach out and choke me And all the time he’s mumbling Truth, like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold. You push it, stretch it, it will never be enough Kick it beat it, it will never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying, to the moment we leave dying, it will just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream.” In this poem, Todd is saying that the madman is passion, but passion (the blanket) is not enough, it leaves you cold and exposed. Through your whole life, passion only is shown on your face when you wail and scream and cry. You need it to a certain extent because as Keating said, “the human race is filled with passion” and also that passion is the reason to stay alive, but just following your...

Procrastination

...English 101 16, September 2013 Procrastination Strikes Again From the time we are very young our parents tell us to be prepared, to do our homework, not to leave anything for the last minute. However, these lessons never seemed to stick for me. For most of my life being unprepared was what I was known for, “I’ll get to it later”, and “I still have time”, were some of my favorite mottos. That is, until a very rude awakening made me realize that we never have as much time as we think to get everything done. It was the first semester of my sophomore year and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Everyone was busy working on their midterm designs projects, everyone with the exception of myself and a few other students who also thought they would have more time. We were all given three weeks to prepare for our midterm critiques, where we were all expected to present a comprehensive design for an outdoor shelter. As usual I had begun the assignment with great enthusiasm, which had fizzled out to less than interested in just two days. I began telling myself the presentation was no big deal; I could finish all of the requirements in one week no problem. And so the procrastinating began, all of a sudden my other assignments seemed much more important as I did everything in my power to avoid working on the presentation. Everything would work out fine, I kept telling myself there is still time. One week before the presentation the nerves had begun to set in and I finally decided to...

Bang Bang

...shorthand mantra defines youth, on a certain level. What is teenagehood if not the adventurous, often foolhardy, desire to test the limits of acceptable behavior—because hey, why not? YOLO! The carpe diem sentiment of “you only live once” has a long history predating its punchy acronymic clipping. Garson O’Toole, on his Quote Investigator blog, traces variations on the theme back to the 18th century, as in this line from Samuel Richardson’s novel “Clarissa”: “We live but once in this world; and when gone, are gone from it for ever.” The exact wording of “you only live once” begins cropping up in the late 19th century, and by 1937 it was popular enough to be used as the title of a Fritz Lang film noir. One wry elaboration, credited to the comedian Joe E. Lewis in 1952, is “You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.” Today’s young purveyors of YOLO do indeed appear to be trying to work it right, though what that means is up for debate. Eble’s students illustrate its typical use, as a carefree tag to explain an impulsive choice: “You want to park illegally in this spot? YOLO!” “Should I buy these shoes or pay rent? YOLO!” The word has also found favor as a verb, as in this Yelp review of a Jersey City pizzeria: “All the times I come home after a night of YOLO-ing, I crave a delish slice to soak up the booze and sober me up.” But as the term has circulated over the past several months, a YOLO backlash has set in. Jason Salcedo, a high school senior from...

Internet

...It is very difficult to differ between the good and bad aspects of internet. There are good and bad things about every service of the internet.   If you chat you can meet many interesting people which come from all over the world. Distance is not important any more. You can meet people which are not able to find friends in reality because of their appearance. In cyberspace there is no appearance - the character of a person counts. But you also can meet people, who cheat on you and fool you. That can be funny, but it is not if you want to meet “real”, devine friends. Sometimes, if you meet your online friends it can be very thrilling. You make your own picture of your chat-partner in your mind. And what about your friends in reality? There will be less time left for them, if you sit in front of the PC all the day. But there is also the possibility to make your real friends your online-friends.   Searching for information you will find a huge amount of it on every topic you are searching for. This can be very comfortable. You only have to type in a word and you will find everything about it. But be careful! There is also false information. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between true and false information.   Often you have the possibility to listen to music on the internet. You may also download it for free. That is very cheap because you only have to pay the telephone-costs and the music is for free. What does that mean for the musicians? They will not get all their money...
