Entero Virus D68

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a RNA virus, from the family Picornaviridae, responsible for respiratory infections. Because it is an Entero Virus and has different strains, slight changes can happen which make it difficult for the immune system to develop protection against the new forms of the virus. The first case reported in the United States was in California in 1962 and since then, infections caused by the EV-D68 were not very common until last year, when an outbreak happened. From August 2014 to January 2015, over 1,150 cases were reported and people from different states presented clusters of severe respiratory problems due to EV-D68 (National Enterovirus Surveillance System-NESS).

At home, forms of protection from EV-D68 include: washing hands often with soap and water for about 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer, avoiding close contact with infected people, like kissing or sharing eating utensils, when coughing and/or sneezing, contain droplets by covering your mouth with your elbow or using a tissue, keeping sick children home, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces most touched or in contact with the sick …show more content…
normally occur from August to October. Although not very common since its discovery in 1962, an outbreak of the disease was reported last year in the United States. Over 1,150 people were infected and signs and symptoms ranged from a mild cold to severe respiratory conditions that required hospitalization, and in some cases mechanical ventilation. Most of the affected were children. An increase of the symptoms of acute flaccid myelitis paralysis was noticed at the same time, which created suspicions about the interaction with the EV-D68 virus. Due to the number of the outbreak and the first widespread testing for this virus, a lot of research was conducted. Forty-eight patients from California and Colorado diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis between 2012 and 2014 were tested for the Enterovirus D68. The results indicated that the EV-D68 was closely associated with the acute flaccid myelitis (Todd B,
