Entrepreneurial Leadership
In business, one should be goal oriented. Entrepreneurs take risks in business, trying to achieve their goal without knowing what the outcome may be. There are many ways to become an excellent entrepreneurial leader and there are resources out there to make businesses successful. While achieving profit, it is also important to help the greater cause, such as the community.
Blake Mycoskie is a true definition of an entrepreneur. He has succeeded in all the business ventures he pursued and has become more successful with every business. Blake is not afraid to take risks and has tried to make sure that he puts his best foot forth to make sure his businesses become successful. His first project was opening a laundry service in college for all the college students and it very well which led to it expanding to other colleges. Blake then sold the laundry company and then started a music company that aimed at country music stars, with the success of that he sold that company also. Blake has a great business mind and he has great ideas to generate profit that’s why his businesses were successful. Mycoskie raised 2 million dollars with a reality show which they got the money from celebrities but it was later bought by Rupert Murdoch that too was a success. After those business ventures, another one came about and this time he partnered with a traffic school to help promote Driver’s Education Direct and he also created a marketing company to promote Driver’s Education Direct. Blake Mycoskie makes very wise business choices that have led him to the point that he is today. His leadership skills are absolutely intriguing because he makes his businesses successful and knows when to let go of the business because he has reached his profitable goal for that business.
Blake Mycoskie is better known for his company called TOMS. Mycoskie went to Argentina and while he was traveling, he was shocked by the poverty stricken countries and he saw the children who had no shoes and were walking barefoot. That’s when he decided to start TOMS. He founded it in 2006, in honor of his trip to Argentina. Blake started TOMS in his apartment and he was supported by mostly college students, most of his projects were supported by college students. Toms (2011) stated that “Blake made a commitment to match every pair of TOMS purchased with a new pair given to a child in need. One for One” (para. 2). Blake is still getting profit while getting making a positive impact on children in Argentina. This is generous and it also helps others want to buy his products because he is giving a helping hand. This drives profit for his company and it is motivation to keep during the right thing and compassion for the children in Argentina who are poverty stricken and are walking around barefoot. Mycoskie also provided TOMS shoes for children with health reason and wellness. According to Toms (2011), “Health educated children have a better chance of improving the future of their entire community” (why we give, para. 5). His drive to have a quality product also helps him gain profit because there are different styles. There are diverse styles for men, women, and children. So anyone has access to this product without any limitations, there are also vegan-friendly styles for individuals of all ages that use no animal byproducts. In 2008, he raised awareness where he and some college students and people from the community went one day without having shoes and it was a way to show others how life would be without shoes.
Blake Mycoskie always has great ideas and is not afraid of the many challenges entrepreneurship brings. He also started the One for One for eyewear which provides prescription glasses or surgery or kids in need around the world. Blake’s leadership style is Participative (Democratic) because with this style the leader makes all the decisions and but involves the staff or employees for ideas and inputs in the decision making process. Involving employees increases creative thinking and various opinions can lead to an excellent product which leads to profit for the entrepreneurs. Participative leadership is also known as innovation through collaboration. Employees tend to keep their ideas to themselves because they never know as to whether their boss would allow them to have input. Team work is the key to getting all outlets open and letting creativity flow from different individuals. There are fewer turnovers when employee ideas are taken into consideration. Mycoskie involved college students for most of his business and the community so he can get many opinion on what should the product look like, what’s appropriate, how to serve the community, etc. Boone (2011) found that businesses using teamwork hope to build a creative environment where all members contribute their knowledge and skills to solve problems or seize opportunities.
Anita Roddick is an amazing activist and business woman. Everything she puts her mind to, she goes out and gets it without any hesitation and she goes all out with it. Anita started The Body Shop in 1976 with stuff she found in her garage. She started small and eventually the business expanded to the public. Anita stated that nobody talks about entrepreneurship, but that’s exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking (Roddick, para. 2). Anita was very passionate about making her products environmentally friendly and going “green”. Roddick, is also an activist, she believes in animal protection, human rights, and she does community trade. The Body Shop products have been known as green and the ingredients use mostly recycled products and she was strongly against animal testing. She is a fierce business woman who had many ventures such as writing books, being involved in many organizations, etc. The Body Shop supports keeping the environment well by using recycled materials in The Body Shop products and also making sure that the buyer’s body doesn’t get negatively impacted by the chemicals. While still achieving profit, she made sure she was being environmentally friendly and she didn’t allow animal testing. Anita was a strong advocate against animal testing and she was always trying to better the community in many ways. Lyall (2007) stated that “Ms. Roddick believed businesses could be run ethically, with what she called “moral leadership,” and still turn a profit” (para. 2). The Body Shop eventually became a franchise and it became successful. According to Anita, business is not financial science it’s about trading, buying, and selling. It’s about creating a product or service so good that people will pay for it. Anita’s leadership style is Delegative (Free Reign) because she was always on the go and she wasn’t constantly there to make all the decisions. She relied on top management to handle the entire decision making but she had the final ruling. She increased her production by outsourcing, offshoring, and nearsharing. Her products are well known because she travelled all over the world on different missions. Anita’s social responsibility was respect for human rights, environment, animal protection, and absolute belief in community trade. She is known to have an undying love for several organizations that she constantly supported with her business. Everyone she traded with had to respect animal rights when it came to cosmetics. Anita felt strongly about business and quoted “For me, campaigning and good business is also about putting forward solutions, not just opposing destructive practices or human right abuses” (para. 8). All her products are natural and she promoted recycling and wastage by outsourcing and partnering with minorities therefore empowering them, which contributed to the success of The Body Shop.
I identify with Participative leadership because there is team work involved and employee partnership in creative thinking and bringing great ideas to the company. This helps in the success of business because there many ideas that different individuals brings creates a very great business. The three resources are financial assistance, counseling and training, and contracting with federal agencies. Financial assistance is one of the important factors of starting a business. Research is required to find out what type of financing is needed and whether the business qualifies for government through the Small Business Administration (SBA). Counseling and training is vital so that business can go in the right direction. The owner will know what may be expected of them and what to do in order to have a successful business and to achieve a global market. SCORE is one of the resources available when starting a business. Contracting and federal agencies boost the economy and thus creating jobs and federal agencies get creative ideas, innovation, and technical skills of SBA.
Nevertheless, Blake Mycoskie and Anita Roddick are excellent examples of true business minded individuals. They took risks to make their businesses successful while helping the community and still achieving great profit. Instead of reaching out for profit only, they reached out to the community and made sure that they provided quality service to those who are buying their products.
