INRODUCTION:
Attention: Good Afternoon. My name is X and I will be …
Purpose: discussing the current situation in Eritrea.
Overview: Eritrea is small country on the Horn of Africa country slightly larger than Pennsylvania with a population of around 5.2m. The country of Eritrea started the last century as an Italian colony. After WWII it was handed over to Ethiopia. Ever since then Eritrea has been battling many challenging issues.
Transition: One of these challenges is its relations with the United States.

Body:
Main Point 1: US Relations/ Interest
a. War on Terror / cooperation with
Its relationship with the US is complicated. Up until 2005 the US sent around $60mil a year in assistance to Eritrea until the government told USAID to leave. Eritrea’s location near Somali and Sudan makes it a key ally in the war on terror. However,
b. Possible rouge state designation / lack of cooperation
Recently relations have worsened since an exiled Somali Islamist leader with ties to Al Qaeda was reported to be in the country conducting a conference in the capital city of Asmara. This resulted in the United States to threaten to add Eritrea to the rogue states list with Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria, and North Korea. This would have lead to crippling sanctions. Eritrea’s cooperation with Somali rebels has continued to be an issue with not only the US but most of the rest of the world.
Transition: As bad as its relationship with the US is Eritrea’s relationship with its neighbors is much worse and has a very negative impact on the rest of the country.

Main Point 2: National Considerations
a. Relations with neighbors / Sudan/ Ethiopia
Eritrea has been in a state of war in some way or another with one or more of its neighbors since its independence. It has fought with Sudan, Yemen, Ethiopia, and most recently Djibouti. From 1961 to 1991 the people of Eritrea fought Ethiopia for independence and then again from 1993 to 2000 over a border dispute. This war resulted in the death of about 100,000 Eritreans and Ethiopians. Although it is not currently at war there is an ongoing border dispute with Djibouti. Eritrea has also been uncooperative with UN peacekeeping troops, restricting movement of troops and imposing fuel restriction.
b. Current lack permanent government/ EIJ Most of these issues can be traced back to the oppressive government. The current transitional government has not held public election since 1993 and does not allow for any other parties aside from the one currently in power. Many of the members of the opposition parties have been jail and never heard from.
c. Media control / total
The government has also eliminated all privately owned news media. In fact in 2010 Reporters Without Borders reported “[they] do nothing but relay the regime's belligerent and ultra-nationalist discourse. ... Not a single [foreign correspondent] now lives in Asmara.” The group also ranked Eritrea 178th in the work for media openness. This is the lowest possible rating even below North Korea at 177. Transition: Due to many of these issues the economy of Eritrea is very poor which.

Main Point 3: Economic Considerations
a. Economy general
Eritrea is on the bottom 10 of the world poorest countries with the average person earning less than $2 a day. The constant state of war has resulted in almost no economic growth and at some point has caused huge losses. For example in 2000 during its war with Ethiopia about $600 million in damages occurred. The caused a 62% drop in the total food output of the country. Despite possible large deposits of gold and oil Eritrea economy is very agriculturally based. Most attempts by foreign companies to work with Eritrea fail. Eritrea has been consistently ranked in the bottom five for ease of doing business with. This has resulted the country importing nearly ten times as much as they export.
b. Government control
As with most issues this also can be traced back to oppressive government control. One problem is the “National service” program where citizens must work for 6 month for the government; however, it is common for workers to never be released from service since it is a significant form of income for the government. The Eritrean government also controls all the banks and has made it illegal to use foreign currency. Even getting foreign aid into the country is difficult as the Government demands private sector investments such as stocks and bonds rather than normal aid programs.
Transition: These issues alone can cause significant dissent within a population.

CONCUSION
Summary: As you can see the people of Eritrea are facing numerous challenges.
Purpose: I hope this has broadened your understanding of situation in the relatively unmentioned country of Eritrea.
Closure: Ladies and gentlemen, this concludes my briefing. Are there any question?

Imperialism In Ethiopia

...From 1889 to 1913, Menelik II was the Emperor of Ethiopia and continued to be after the Italians’ failed to overthrow him. As a result of an ongoing dispute over the area of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Italy attempted to formulate a treaty to deal with the situation. However, the two versions treaties, one in Amharic and one in Italian, said two different things. The Amharic one stated that when dealing with other countries, the Ethiopians could use the Italian government for help, while the Italian one said that they had to use the Italian’s help (“HISTORY OF ETHIOPIA”). The Italians were viewing Ethiopia as a colony and the Ethiopians viewed it more of a mutual alliance. In 1890 the Italians announced to the world that they had control of Ethiopia and in 1893 Italy tried to impose this over the Ethiopians by force (“HISTORY OF ETHIOPIA”). On March 1st, 1896, the Italians came against about 70,000 men of the Ethiopian army...

...Bernal, Victoria, 2005, “Eritrea On-line: Diaspora, Cyberspace, and the Public Sphere.” American Ethnologist 32(4): 660-675. Through her investigation of Eritreans’ efforts to define their national identity and create a sense of belonging, Bernal argues that the internet is changing the ways in which national identities and alternative “global and transnational” communities are created. To support this, Bernal studied Dehai.com, the website created by Eritreans in diaspora to enable exchange new and information regarding the Ethiopian-Eritrean war (1998-2000). Dehai had the effect of creating a cyberspace community in which Eritreans could “transcend their location” (Bernal, 2005: 661). But Bernal argues that information distribution alone is not enough to create a ‘public sphere.’ She contends that violence and conflict played a vital role in the formation of the Dahai online community. She points out that war gave the Dehai participants a sense purpose and reason to create a public forum (see Bernal, 2005:662). The success and longevity of Dehai.com Bernal says is attributable to several factors which differentiate it from other online communities. These include: (1) Dehai was created by ordinary citizens in diaspora; (2) the anonymity inherent in online communication allows Dehai participants to freely and openly express their views, an option that would not be available to them otherwise; and (3) Dahai goes beyond the typical cyberspace community in that is has organized...

Eritrean Islamic Jihad Movement

...II. The Eritrean Islamic Jihad Movement (EJIM) Eritrean separatism began in earnest during World War II, as Eritrea passed from Italian to British rule in 1941 and remained under British administration until 1950. Arab states pushed for independence given the large Muslim population and ties to the Arab world from that community. The initial constitution in 1952 was ratified by Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, but Eritrea and Ethiopia were linked through a federal system, under the sovereignty of the emperor. Eritreans resisted Ethiopian rule and began armed struggle for their independence in 1958. The Eritrean Islamic Jihad Movement (EIJM) began activity in 1975 when a group of Islamist-minded guerillas split off from the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) that had been fighting since the beginning of the Eritrean independence movement. The EIJM was formally established in 1980. Since independence in 1993, the EIJM (and its factions) have been the principal Muslim opposition group in Eritrea, seeking the violent overthrow of the ELF government led by President Isaias Afewerki. EIJM claims to only target the Eritrean government and its apparatus in the country, not Western targets, and seeks the establishment of an Islamic caliphate in Eritrea. The group is based in Sudan and is made up primarily of dissidents from the ELF, conservative Eritrean (and some other Muslims from Horn of Africa countries), and a Muslim youth network. The group is also known by a variety of other names—the...

Human Security in Horn of Africa

...“I am one or two days away from death; they will shoot me dead, thus if you give birth to a son please name him after me.” ----An Eritrean victim of human trafficking from The Sinai Desert INTRODUCTION This paper examines the issue of human trafficking as it relates to human security in the Horn of Africa. Trafficking takes place by criminal means through the threat or use of force, coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of positions of power or abuse of positions of vulnerability. Further, it relates to all stages of the trafficking process: recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of person. An agreed definition of human trafficking exists under Article 3 of the “Palermo Protocol” on trafficking in persons which went into effect on 25 December 2003. This internationally agreed definition focuses on exploitation of human beings – be it for sexual exploitation, other forms of forced labor, slavery, servitude, or for the removal of human organs. Trafficking is not just a transnational crime across international borders; the definition applies to internal domestic trafficking of human beings. In the Horn of Africa (HOA), both cross border and internal trafficking of women and children is prevalent. For example, in Ethiopia, children are being trafficked into armed conflict where it is reported that over 20,000 of them have been victims. Almost all of the countries in the region have been identified as sources, transit points or destination...

Child Labor Began In The Late 1700's

... While most places stopped their use of child labor, there are still many countries that are still using it extremely. The top two countries that are in use of child labor is Eritrea and Somalia Eritrea is ranked number one in its usage of child labor. “In Eritrea, the government holds programs under which children in grades 9 to 11 are asked to offer their labor in various fields like agriculture and public services. Children are also often forced to participate in compulsory military training programs (Oishimaya Sen Nag). Forty percent of children anywhere from the ages five to fourteen in Somalia, are forced to undergo gruesome situations while working. Only about twenty percent of those children attend school, while the other twenty percent work even harder to support their loved ones. Fishing, threshing grain, and livestock raising are just some of the agricultural activities where Somali children are employed to work as labor. Construction and mining industries operating within the country also use children as part of the workforce. Children are also seen begging on the streets, hawking, and minibus conducting. Children are also engaged in armed conflicts, illegal and anti-national activities (Oishimaya Sen Nag). While there are many other countries still involved with this horrendous act, Eritrea and Somalia are the worse. Child labor is still a major issue and will start to grow once more, unless people work together to put a stop to it. Throughout the years, laws have...

Is Your Chocolate the Result of Unfair Exploitation of Child Labor?

...1. Should labor practices in another country be a relevant consideration in international trade? Why or why not? Yes, the labor practices of another country is a relevant consideration as far as international trade is concerned most especially in terms of imports and exports which are patronized by consumers all over the world. Nowadays, information is made available to the public and is accessed by people at their most convenient time through the World Wide Web or internet. A curious consumer can learn as to where the products he or she wish to purchase were manufactured as well as to where the raw materials are gathered. The level of satisfaction decreases and an increase in dissatisfaction can be a result of a knowledgeable consumer who is aware of the company’s labor practices. Moreover, international trade is not only after the products a country produces but also concerned as to the social responsibility of the company or country as to which the products are produced. Although most countries are only after the end products, I think the people concerned in the trade should be knowledgeable enough and knows the products that are good for exports and imports. The child labor and/or slave labor do not reflects human right violation and child’s rights. Though companies are making efforts to resolve these issues other however are making efforts to hid it from the public and continues to practice it.
