Ernie Breaks

The first thing that comes to me while reading this short story is responsibility. Defined as the state of being the person who caused something to happen, a duty or task that you are required or expected to do, something that you should do because it is morally right or legally required.
The short story, Ernie Breaks written by Genevieve, main themes is responsibility and expectations. Cara is expected to be responsible for the turtle. She is expected to be responsible in school. And expected to be responsible of her own behaviour. Jed, her brother, has a sort of the same responsibilities according to the turtle, which he and Cara fails. Cara is expected to be responsible for Ernie and for taking care of him, but she ends up killing him by dropping him on the floor. In the same way is Jed expected to be responsible for Ernie, but like his sister, he does not fulfil the task as it was expected of them. Referring to the definition of being responsible Jed and Cara fails.
The story is told from Cara’s point of view. Cara is 10 years old and she is just graduated from 4th grade. She lives with her mother and her older brother, Jed. Cara is in some ways a smart girl, she is fully aware of how to handle her mother and get the most out of a situation. For example with the passing gift. Cara wants a dog, but her mother wants to make a deal and give her a fish. Cara knows if she agrees with the deal something more may come. She is also noticing the small details and she is very observant, she noticed when Gary touched her mother’s shoulder when they were talking about people’s sexuality. Her mother’s neck was red as a ham, she noticed. On the other hand, she has troubles in school with both the other kids and the educational stuff. She refuses to submit her math test and is a borderline candidate for the special Ed room, as Jed calls it “The retard room”.
It is clear that Cara seeks her brother’s acceptance and wants to be cool in his eyes. Jed is accepting her and wants to be with her and Ernie until school starts. Then everything is turned upside down. Jed does not want to be together with Cara and will not let her in to his room to be with Ernie. The fact that Jed has left Cara outside in the cold, means that Cara does not get help from Jed with her math homework as it was expected and she is not able to take care of Ernie. As an example of Cara trying to gain Jed’s acceptances. Cara does not tell their mother about the way Jed mistreated Ernie. Jed and Cara are able to fake their common responsibility for Ernie’s wealth into a cause of death by infection and not maltreatment. According to the definition of responsibility, they fail to do what is morally right.
In the pet store, she does not want to have the angelfish because it is too gay. The fish becomes the symbol of her trying to be tough or cool in her brother’s eyes. She chooses the turtle because it is so ugly that it is cute.
When sitting at the math test she works with fractions she says why learn something that is broken. Things are useless when they are broken. If you are not responsible of the thing being broken why care? This represents at least two symbols as I see it.
It gives her an excuse of not knowing what to do with the fractions in the math test. They are broken and why fix them?
Ernie’s death. Ernie is broken. He is a fraction. Neither Cara nor her brother Jed takes responsibility of telling each other and their mother the truth about Ernie’s death. He is broken like a fraction and therefore he is useless.
The mother is not responsible according to the signals she and the pet shop owner Gary sends. Cara has observed that Gary touched the mother and the mother got red and she paid sixty dollars for Ernie. Cara does not really think it was such a great offer but instead she thinks it was an excuse for her mother to visit Gary from Quit4life. When confronting her mother she is told not to change the topic.
Living in a family, we expect that all members is telling the truth. That they are responsible to each other.
From my point of view. The mother tries to cover up her relationship with Gary when Cara is confronting her. That is not what we expect from a mother and it is not responsible behaviour. The children of the family covers up the truth about Ernie’s death. That is not what is expected and it is not responsible. Like mother - like daughter and son.

Ernie Breaks

...Ernie Breaks An often mentioned sentence today is: “Kids do not have responsibilities and obligations”, “it is easy to be a kid” and so on. Everybody wishes themselves back to the time where they were kids and the so called life with no problems. The truth is that it is not always easy to be a little girl in elementary school. “Ernie Breaks” is written by Genevieve Scott in 2011 and it deals with the topics; being a young girl growing up and the responsibilities it involves such as relationship with family and friends. The text is about a girl called Cara who is also the narrator of the story. Cara just passed fourth grade and her elder brother Jed passed his grade too. Cara is out for shopping with her mom and they look for a present to Cara and Jed because they passed their grades. Cara wants a pet, a dog. Her mom says that she will just treat it like her toys so she recommends fish as an alternative. Eventually Cara ends up with a little turtle advocated by the shop owner, Gary. Cara begins to like her and Jed’s Turtle and they name it “Ernie”. Jed does not like it that much, nevertheless is he going to keep Ernie in his room. They have to split their time with Ernie though. As time goes, Jed begins to treat Ernie very bad. He does not clean the water and he even throws it around! Cara is very angry when she sees it. When Jed went to hockey tournament with their mother and Cara is home alone, Cara begins to comfort Ernie and she cuddles it. Suddenly when she hold Ernie up...

The Wanderer

...Maresca had co-written Dion's previous # 1 hit, "Runaround Sue", but originally intended "The Wanderer" to be recorded by another group, Nino and the Ebbtides. They passed on it in favour of another Maresca song, so Dion was given it as the B-side of his follow-up single, "The Majestic", a song which his record company had chosen for him. The record was turned over by radio DJs who preferred "The Wanderer", which duly entered the US charts in December 1961 and rose to # 2 in early 1962. It also reached # 10 in the UK and # 1 in Australia. The song was recorded with an uncredited background vocal group, the Del-Satins, in a rockier style than Dion's earlier hits with the Belmonts. The Del-Satins were an established doo-wop group led by Stan Ziska (later known as Stan Sommers), who at the time were also contracted to Laurie Records, and who later formed the core of Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge. Musicians on the original recording included Bobby Gregg, Bucky Pizarelli and Johnny Falbo on guitars, Jerome Richardson on alto sax, Buddy Lucas on tenor sax, and Panama Francis and Sticks Evans on drums.[citation needed] Dion said of "The Wanderer":[2] At its roots, it's more than meets the eye. "The Wanderer" is black music filtered through an Italian neighborhood that comes out with an attitude. It's my perception of a lot of songs like "I'm A Man" by Bo Diddley or "Hoochie Coochie Man" by Muddy Waters. But you know, "The Wanderer" is really a sad song. A lot of guys...

George Chuvalo

...rugged, bull necked fighter, he had very strong punching power and had a brutal body attack. In an article in 1965 Chuvalo was described as a crude, strong, and powerful. Rocky Marciano was quoted saying Chuvalo was a hundred years too late, he had to fight in the golden era of heavy weight boxing during the 1960’s and 1970’s. In a career which spanned three decades and 93 fights, Chuvalo fought 6 world heavyweight champions, and failed in two attempts to capture the World Heavyweight Title. He lost to heavy weights including Muhammad Ali. Although he lost to heavy weight champions he also defeated top defenders such as Yvon Durelle, Doug Jones, Jerry Quarry and Cleveland Williams George. He had fought for the world title twice, losing to Ernie Terrell and in his first fight with Muhammad Ali. In 93 professional fights, Chuvalo was never knocked off his feet. Chuvalo was a spirited boxer and was looked up to by many. Chuvalo was put into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and was well deserving of it. The information I have shown above clearly states that George Chuvalo was significant in Canadian sport society and was well deserved to be my groups choice for our heritage minute. He didn’t win every fight he was faced but he lost with pride. Mostly anybody you talk to about Chuvalo has only good things to say about him and praise him for his strong and powerful self and his push to win. In our video we chose to do a clip of George Chuvalo’s fight with Muhammad Ali. Chuvalo...

...You got ball, “BREAK A LEG” One glance at the assignment’s title and the first thing came to my mind, “What in the world is this?” Is it literally my lecturer wants me to organize a fist fighting sort of a competition where we challenge guys to fight with each other by kicking their guts out? My thoughts went wild and I start imagining Brad Pitt look alike guys flexing their well define sculpted body with sweat dripping from that crunchy abdominal muscles. The reality was far apart from my imagination. Yes, there will be guys involve. Yes, they will compete with each other and yes, they will even flex their muscles, but for a completely different reason. It’s a futsal competition! I was thrilled with this as it will be my first ever venture in organizing sports event. Moreover, the title of the event itself was so catchy that I was so eager to promote it. You got ball, “Break a Leg” merely means there is a ball in the court, “Good Luck”. That very moment, I knew this event is going to be a challenge as I may end up with too much on my plate to chew. With all the weekends occupied in doing study revisions and weekdays by attending classes, I have to squeeze through whatever little time left to materialise this event. I was being very optimistic while carrying the entire task and this really helped to pull me through the muddy grounds when it was hard to decorate my every single step. Bad New Message

...Ave. Cincinnati, OH 45221 Dear Mr. Rowan: Thank you for your interest in staying at the Panama City 100 over your upcoming spring break. The Panama City area has a lot of exciting developments happening right now and in upcoming months. After a few unfortunate experiences at our hotel, a strict policy against accepting reservations from student groups was put into place. Without the normal amenities that a resort hotel might have such as a tiki Hut, DJ or lazy river, we have sought to cater strictly to business professionals and over-night travelers. Due to this strict policy, we are unable to provide your student group with the fifteen double rooms that you have requested. Although our hotel is unable to accommodate college students, it would be a pleasure to keep in contact for any future inquires you may have as a business professional later on. If you are still interested in visiting Panama City Florida, there are many other resorts in the same area as our hotel which I believe would provide you with a wonderful stay. The Palms Resort sits directly on Panama City Beach and includes free parking, WiFi, and a daily complimentary breakfast. There is also a tiki bar which provides refreshments and cocktails next to the ocean-view pool. Regardless of your final destination, I hope that you have an excellent Spring Break. I look forward to hearing from you for any inquiries you may have after graduation. Good luck in the rest of your college career...

Stateline Transhipment Models

...Can we apply transshipment models to inventory applications? Why or why not? Transshipment models can be applied to inventory applications because like transshipment models inventory applications deal transporting goods to different destinations. Items are transported from one destination to another just like inventory applications. Is the transportation model an example of decision making under certainty or decision making under uncertainty? Why? Transportation model is an example of decision making under certainty because the destinations of the goods are decided and are not unknown which makes the decision making a certainty because the destination is known. The transshipment model is an extension of the transportation model in which intermediate transshipment points are added between the sources and destinations. An example of a transshipment point is a distribution center or warehouse located between plants and stores. In a transshipment problem, items may be transported from sources through trans-shipment points on to destinations, from one source to another, from one transshipment point to another, from one destination to another, or directly from sources to destinations, or some combination of these alternatives. Therefore we can apply the transshipment models to inventory applications because deals with a source and destinations and they are similar. The transportation model is an example of decision making under certainty because the sources and destination...

Optimism

...Jordan Anderson GS2745W – 1/07/2015 02_A2 – Optimism A. My girlfriend/boyfriend left me. Often times when there is a breakup, people will blame it on something the other person did or has done. It’s harder to point the finger at one’s self and look in the mirror and ask what could have I done better. Though you may be feeling down about the break up, take a look at yourself and find ways to make yourself better. This will lead to you feeling better about yourself and will likely make you more attractive to the opposite sex. B. I was late with my rent and may lose my apartment. Considering that you were late with your rent most likely means that you were not paying close enough attention to your pocket book and planning for future expenses. This would provide a great opportunity to sit down, consider your income and then draw up a budget that will allow for this type of thing to never happen again. C. My car needs to be repaired. Similar to the one above, this would be an added expense. However you have to look at it in a way of an investment. I was taught the rule of 10’s. Plan your actions based on reactions 10 minutes from now, 10 months from now and 10 years from now. If you repair your car now, yes you will not have as much money today, however you will be able to get to work having a reliable means of transportation thus making your investment 10 months from now well worth the expense. D. My hours were cut at work. Instantly people will consider...

Analysis

...While all relationships can be difficult, romantic relationships seem to be some of the most complicated types. Sometimes two people can care for one another so much, yet they cannot seem to communicate effectively. When a lack of communication occurs between two people for a long period of time, it most likely will lead to a huge confrontation and possibly a complete dissolve of the relationship. The Break-Up is a prime example where we see that interpersonal communication is key when trying to maintain a strong and healthy relationship. We begin this romantic comedy with Gary, which is played by Vince Vaughn, trying to capture young Brooke’s attention with his initiating sense of humor. But as the film progresses we see how something as little as lemons can ensue an argument which had been slowly building up over time. As we look at Knapp’s model we quickly come to find out that, The Break-Up, was a film primarily based in the “coming apart” stage. Throughout this paper I will focus on the stages of circumscribing, stagnating, and avoiding and how they ultimately led to the downfall of Brooke and Gary’s relationship. As we look at Knapp’s development model, what exactly does circumscribing mean? In the circumscribing stage, communication between members decreases in quantity and quality. Rather discussing a disagreement (which requires energy on both sides of the relationship), members opt for withdrawal. Circumscribing involves the shrinking interest and commitment. (Looking...

Hae Min Lee Guilty

...Imagine someone you like or even love are leading you on while they're with someone else, jealousy and rage start forming into hatred. Adnan’s jealousy may have drove him over the edge leading him to kill Hae. Even though he doesn’t seem like the jealous type, many of Hae’s close friends have seen Adnan being possessive towards Hae. He had a motive for killing her after she broke his heart, he wanted to break hers. One more reason why Adnan is guilty is because he’s a natural born liar. As claimed by Sarah Koenig, “He saw his parents standing at the window of the homecoming dance. He saw his mother raise her voice at Hae Lee in front of his classmates. ‘Look what you’re doing to our family!’ He saw the pain in his mother’s face because she knew they were together. And he saw himself, in the end, standing there with nothing to show for it, but a guilty conscience and a pack of lies in which he cloaked himself.”(“The Breakup.” Pg. 6).
