As Mr. Ernie Cannata recalls, the 1960s were an interesting decade because of all the historic events that occurred. Having historic impacts, the 1960s included the launching of the Apollo 11 mission, assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. Of all the impacting historic events of the decade, Ernie Cannata will forever remember the day that John F. Kennedy was assassinated as if it was yesterday. Ernie Cannata is a long time English teacher at both Santa Ana High School and Godinez Fundamental High School where he has coached field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and softball while working for the Santa Ana Unified School District. Decades later, the impression caused by the assassination of the thirty fifth president of the United States is still clearly imbedded in Mr. Cannata’s mind. Being just a child in grade school back in New Jersey, the day the president was assassinated caused a great impact on the nation as he recalls. John F. Kennedy having an Irish ancestry led to deep sadness in the community which was very pro- Kennedy. The sixties were an interesting decade because of the two Kennedy assassinations, the hippie movement, The Mets winning the world series, and music explosion. I recall the sixties being a good and bad time due to all of the events that were occurring throughout the time. All that was broadcasted for three consecutive days was the constant viewing of the assassination, the funeral, and the killing of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner, as he was being heading towards Dallas police headquarters where he would be detained.
