The Positive and Negative Effects of Religion During the
Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries
By

October 17, 2002

The undeniable power, force, and influence of religion stand out throughout history. However, according to J. Michael Allen and James B. Allen in World History from 1500, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, religion was exceptionally important, because it had a great influence on everything from government to social order and family relationships (16). Hundreds of years may separate these two time periods and the modern world, but the same positive effects of religion such as unity, security, and a social order are still basic ideals in today’s world. This is also true for the negative effects such as the conflicts that result in war and bloodshed, the separation of social classes, and the corruption throughout the church, especially the recent sex scandal in the Catholic church. In order to appreciate the impacts of religion during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the positive and negative effects of this era must be understood. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, religion gave people a sense of belonging. Belonging to a church was important during this time because it gave people a sense of security and support. This was important because it made it much easier to deal with everyday problems and issues. For instance, diseases and death were extremely common during this time period, because of the lack of medicine and technology. So, religion played an extremely important role in giving people a “guiding light” to pray for support, health, and help. People also had a sense of spiritual protection in everyday life and also in the afterlife. With a sense of protection, they lived a life with less fear of death and more of a sense

...he case of Coke and Pepsi in India is a lesson that all marketers can observe, analyze and learn from, since it involves so many marketing aspects that are essential for all marketers to take into consideration. Both companies had many difficulties, especially Coca-Cola, and it's useful to observe how it dealt with the different aspects, stating from the political environment of the Indian market and the trade barriers it faced, going through the market entry and penetration strategies considered and the flexible marketing mix used and how it was placed to increase consumption and market share, ending with the change in the environment and market due to boycott campaigns for different reasons. Discussion Political environment and trade barriers: Until the early 1990s, India was considered unfriendly to foreign investors, especially in consumer goods sector. If an item could be obtained within the country, imports of similar items were forbidden. Due to this environment, Coca-Cola had withdrawn from the Indian market in 1977. Looking back at Coca-Cola's withdrawal we can notice:  Coke's refusal to give the formula and withdraw from the market wasn't a clever decision, because as a big company, coke must expect to face many challenges. It should have believed in it marketing capabilities and its ability to position its brand as a unique one, different from others even if they claim they are the same. And using the huge resources it has worldwide, it could...

...Can the Brilliant Jerk Be Managed Effectively? By James Haskett JAMES HESKETT James Heskett is a Baker Foundation Professor, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School. ORIGINAL ARTICLE The annoying employee who makes his numbers while alienating those around him will gain needed attention in the coming months with at least one book about to be published on the subject. This is an age-old problem that most managers handle badly. You know the story by now. It concerns high-performing employees, known by some as "stars" and by others as "destructive heroes" or "brilliant jerks," those who generate a great deal of business while creating problems for colleagues. They are demanding to the point of being abusive, they make promises to clients that their colleagues cannot meet, they take too much credit for success, and they generally are unable to adhere to commonly shared values of members of the organization. The management response to this kind of situation is too often ineffective. By their own admission, their managers are reluctant to rock the boat as long as the numbers continue to be good. In doing so, they underestimate the costs to the organization, including the loss of other talent. And when they do act, they do so much too slowly, often after most of the damage has been done. Jack Welch has written about the phenomenon of what he calls "jerks" or "bullies" from his own experience. At GE they were referred to as a "Type 4" manager, "the person who delivers on all...

...People often dream of a fairy tale romance and get married to what they believe are their soul mates. Stories however do not always have beautiful endings; the number of individuals opting for divorce has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Some problems in the marriage can be resolved through variety of ways including counseling but sometimes the only solution to living happily is by parting ways. Interestingly, divorce has many causes resulting in serious effects. There are some common causes of divorce. First of all, Couples often end up having disputes over money. In many cases one of the partners is invariably not happy with the spending habits of the other individual, and this can result in massive fights. Moreover, any form of alcohol or substance abuse can put a terrible strain on a relationship as substance abuse is often followed with abusive behaviour. Many people cannot put up with the addictive behaviour of their partners and this causes divorce. Another cause is immaturity on part of one of the partners and placing excessive demands on the partner. Additionally, many younger couples complain about too much meddling and involvement of their in-laws in their lives. There are also complains of excessive demands of the in-laws on their time and this puts a strain on the marital relationship. Finally, many times people have unrealistic expectations from marriage and what it is supposed to be like and when this distorted view is not realized, it results...

...Synopsis Today I read a very interesting paper. The name of the paper is “The New Science of Building Great Teams”. It is mainly describe the how to build high-performing groups. It is written by Alex “Sandy” Pentland. The author asked us to look for the “it factor” for a success team. The key to high performance is not in the content of discussions but in the manners of communication. Patterns of communication are most important predictor of a team’s success. A success team may have some characteristics as follows (1) Everyone talks and listen in equal measure (2) Connect directly with one another (3) Side conversations within the team (4) Go exploring outside the team. The author also tells some key elements of communication. Those are energy, engagement and exploration. The author suggests us communicating with everyone equally and make sure all numbers get a chance to contribute. We need connect their teammates with one another and spread ideas around. Interaction I was shocked by the different result of using different method to talk with people. I have read a lot of paper about “science”. However, I do not think they work well. Form reading this paper; I learn leadership is neither art nor science. It is service, to those being led. I think leaders need to attend seminars and webinars and do role-plays and learn all kinds of made-up jargon to figure out how to treat their charges decently and get the best efforts out of them by setting an example and leading from...

...Importance of Sports for all The connection between mind and body - the neglect of physical education - sports are the best means of physical development - they in still valuable qualities - the duke of Wellington's remark. 'A sound mind in a sound body' is an expression so familiar and so often quoted that its meaning is likely to have lost something of its edge and appeal. Yet it expresses a profound truth and formulates an ideal which every individual should set before himself. The body is the temple of the mind and is intimately connected with it. Bodily ailments stunt the growth of the mind, just as mental maladies affect the health of the body. The education that is imparted in our schools and colleges is mainly intellectual. It is true that every school and college has a playground and offers facilities for sports like cricket and football. But participation in games is not compulsory and little account is taken of it while awarding certificates and degrees. Besides, there is acute shortage of playgrounds in large cities. Our educationists should realise the organic connection between mind and body, and pay more attention and importance to the physical training of the young. Outdoor games like hockey, football, basket ball and tennis are the best means of ensuring physical health and development. They have several advantages over other forms of exercise. They provide not only exercise for the body but recreation for the mind. Exercising one's limbs at home or in gymnasium-calls...

...DoYeon Kim Professor Danielle Santos College WritingⅡ 15 June 2016 Is Grading F’s Good for Students? Education has been considered as one of the most important and necessary factors for human beings. Parents, teachers, principals, and school boards are always concerned about the educational system and try to make better learning conditions for students. Most people agree with the current academic system; however, some people strongly argue that there are some issues with the system, such as grade inflation and lack of improvement of the educational system. In the article “What Our Education System Needs Is More F’s,” by Carl Singleton, the author begins by pointing out the problems of the current education system of America. He argued that many professors tend to over-mark their students’ grades even though some of the students are ineligible for a passing grade. Singleton suggested giving F’s to students is more important for the educational system rather than investing more money in schools or providing better teaching. According to his argument, low-quality teaching has become widespread these days because of low-quality teachers who don’t completely understand the required materials they are teaching in their classrooms. He asserted the quality of education will not be improved unless teachers give F’s to students who need a certain time to understand all of the materials; providing higher salaries or making complex procedures of certification won’t be much help...

Argumentative Esay on Abortion

...Student’s Name Institution’s Name Course Name Submission Date Abortion With the expansion of personal freedoms through the constitutional provisions, abortion has become a question of personal choice rather than a moral question. Yet there are those who still argue that individuals should not be given the prerogative to decide if they should carry their pregnancies to term, even if that pregnancy is as a result of rape. All these arguments are misguided. In this paper, I propose that the question of aborting or not should be left to the individual(s) who has the responsibility of bringing up the child if at all the pregnancy is taken to full term. Proponents of Pro-choice argue that women who have procured an abortion have a higher propensity of suffering from a broad spectrum of mental health complications such as agoraphobia, panic attack, panic disorder, major depression, bipolar disorder and substance-abuse anomalies (Coleman et al. 45). Notably, these side effects are bound to affect women who have procured abortion and this is largely due to the fact that with opposition still coming from some sections of our societies, these women are denied their rightful societal place due to discrimination. Most of them balk away from the society as they suspect, and accurately so, that they will be discriminated against by the very people who are supposed to provide moral and psychological help. In fact, the propensity of these women to retreat into these psychological...

Personal Responsbility Esay

...Personal responsibility essay Josh Beaver GEN/200 FOUNDATIONS FOR GENERAL EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS 10-19-2013 Jackie Jenkins Personal Achievement Many people do not understand what personal responsibility truly is. From my experience in the military it was a matter of life and death. For a Marine combat squad to be successful in combat, each individual must be trusted to be able to perform his or her duty. Luckily, earning a college degree isn’t quite life or death, however it is still very important. Being successful in school means implementing some of the same techniques taught in the Marines. These qualities, such as personal responsibility, accountability, morality, time management, and self discipline are skills necessary to succeed in life. Personal responsibility is being able to hold yourself accountable for your own actions in life. The ability to take an organized, disciplined approach to a task utilizing skills such as maintaining your morality, personal accountability and organization is pivotal for success with anything you put your mind to in life including college. Personal responsibility is the ability to hold ones self-accountable for their own decisions. The keys to college success are much the same for personal and career endeavors. Having a strong sense of accountability will ultimately be one of the most important skills required to reach maximum success. There will be difficult times in the...

Also, it is important that easyJet was the first mover. Now easyJet is one of the leading low-cost airlines in Europe. All of the competitive advantages are sustainable. To achieve this we will develop our people and establish lasting partnerships with our suppliers,” easyJet is doing the best it can to satisfy its customers. Stelios Haji-Ioannou founded EasyJet in 1995. He was inspired by American low-cost carrier Southwest Airline and he modeled after Southwest Airlines but also added his own twists: avoid using agents and tickets, provide no-frilled travel and use brand new Boeing 737s. Stelios started with £5 millions that he received from his father. He operated two leased airplanes and one staff and chose Luton airport that was cheaper but still close to London downtown. The first easyJet flight was very successful because of its low price of £29 and extensive public relations and advertising. During 1995 to 1999, easyJet was expanding...

Two Esays, What Are the Differences and What Are the Simlarities?

...Compare and Contrast Essay 5/12/2014 Ashford University English 121-AXC1415E Instructor: Jamie Cooper Student: Katherin Wheat When it comes to writing the compare and contrast essay style, it is one of the more difficult ones to achieve. The differences between these two essays “How to say nothing in 500 words” by: Paul McHenry Roberts and “caged bird” by: Maya Angelou is easy to pick out. As far as the similarities goes that proved to a little harder to give a lot of examples. In the following paragraphs there will be plenty of examples of compare and contrast, give summaries, a couple of quotes and a paraphrase will be included in this essay. While how to say nothing in 500 words and Caged Bird are both well-written essays, caged Bird was more visual than How to say nothing in 500 words because the author painted a more detailed picture which kept the reader’s attention, the attended audience was more overly open to more people than that of how to say nothing in 500 words essay, and the author of caged bird had a bigger and deeper impact on the readers then the author of how to say nothing in 500 words did. Caged Bird was more visual than How to say nothing in 500 words because the author painted a more detailed picture which kept the reader’s attention. Maya Angelou’s descriptive essay “Caged bird” tells a story of a caged bird and a free bird. The caged bird signifies a person with the skin color darker than that of a peach colored crayon, held down by the paralyzing...
