The story “The Hockey Sweater” by Roch Carrier shows how important society is and how cultural in communities can be harmful. In the small rural town in Quebec, Canada all the children are so close they “all wore the same uniform” (118). They all acted and looked the same, they had the same hero and all wanted to grow up to be just like him. However because of how similar everyone was they did not accept change or different ideas. Roch wore his blue sweater and went to play hockey but “by the third period he still hadn’t played” (120). He was out casted and isolated from everyone just because of a blue sweater. In the movie a group of kids are struggling to find their own voice in an extremely close society. Since they were kids they have been told what they are going to do and who they are going to be. When a new teacher arrives he pushes them to think for themselves and dive into the idea of choosing their own future. When the school and families learn what the teacher is doing he immediately becomes out casted. Societies can often become closed minded and not open to listen to other ideas. When the kids start to chase after their own dreams they immediately shot down and discouraged. Neil Perry wanted to be actor while his family had a different plan that he was going to become a doctor. When Neil started to follow his dream his father ripped him away from it and was going to isolate him away from his friends. Neil felt trapped and that he would never have a choice and ultimately took his own life. Society can make people do irrational decisions and feel like they don’t have control of their life.
