Eth 125 Week 1 Assignment

...I never imagined my pen could wield such great powers. My journalism teacher recommended that I apply to be a youth writer for the Boyle Heights Beat, a local bilingual community newspaper. When I got the application, I noticed the deadline had already past. My hope dwindled but then I noticed a small note that said to address any questions to the person in charge. The following week, I received an email to thank me for applying and to inform me that all the positions had been filled. While I was not surprised, I was still devastated because I wondered what it would feel like to be a writer for the Boyle Heights community. I wondered if any students had dropped the program, and maybe there would be an opportunity for me. I reached out to the person in charge yet again and I was happy to learn that some students rejected the program’s acceptance which gave me a chance to be part of the community newspaper....

Defining Race and Ethnicity

...Defining Race and Ethnicity (Name) ETH/125 March 29, 2011 (Instructor’s Name) Defining Race and Ethnicity Race is a type of subordinate group made up of a population with physical characteristics that differentiate them noticeably from other racial groups. This is not the only distinction. The biological diversities are given emphasis to by social significance, for a race is a social establishment and not a physical actuality. The fact that biological characteristics categorizing a specific race are frequently discovered in others, as well, only emphasize that there are no obvious difference between races from the point of biological meaning.  Cultural differences characterize an ethnic group. Occasionally, what sets a group apart is physical characteristics and national origin and makes them particularly dissimilar from each other. Schaefer (2006) stated “Despite these difficulties, belief in the inheritance of behavior patterns and in an association between physical and cultural traits is widespread. It is called racism when this belief is coupled with the feeling that certain groups or races are inherently superior to others” (pp. 12-13). The United States is such a multiracial and multiethnic country, people with clear social uniqueness are not acknowledged. These concepts are important to United States society because it can be of help evenly to balance the rights selected dominant groups have, that are refused to subordinate groups, therefore eliminate...

Eth/125 - Wk 9 - Final - Diversity in the United States

...Diversity in the United States Leslie Parvin ETH/125 September 8, 2013 Demetrick Pennie Diversity in the United States The information about diversity in the United States that was covered over the course of this class was very informative, and helped to better understand and relate to the many races that exist in our country in ways that I did not in the past. Furthermore, since my ancestors on my Father's side immigrated from Ireland, I learned more about the trials and tribulations they had to endure upon arriving to this great nation. In addition, the trends in immigration will continue to shape the demographics of our nation while we continue to face the challenges and benefits of such a large diverse nation. More important, although the United States is a nation built on immigrants our history shows we have a long way to go in order to foster a climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism. As a result, this course has helped me to understand how diverse our nation really is. Before taking this class, I had not really given much thought to how diverse our nation has become. However, after completing this class it has helped me in many ways to understand and properly identify not only the many races, but also the incredible uniqueness of their various cultures. According to Schaefer (2012), he stated, "In 2010, approximately 17 percent of the population was members of racial minorities, and another 16 percent or so were Hispanic" (p. 4). With this...

Human Resource Practices

...Abstract This project was conducted to study the human resource practices that can facilitate the social service organisation to effectively align its employees for efficiently service delivery. For this purpose the HRM theories and concepts as well as the best practices applicable to social service organisations were studied. This facilitated the author to find the strategic role that the HRM can play in engaging the employees and assess how the HR can motivate them and align them towards attaining organisation goals and objectives. The ultimate aim was to evaluate how Leyton health care an elderly home care service provider in London can align its HR and attain its objectives. Interview was held for the managerial level staff and questionnaire was given to the service delivery staff of Leyton Health Care. The total samples used for the study were 12. Out of these 2 were managerial level staff and 10 were service delivery staff. Open ended questions were used for the managerial level participants of the organisation while in case of the service delivery employees, a survey questionnaire which had statements with multiple choice questions i.e., close ended questions were used. The statements that were derived were regarded as themes and the evaluation of results was made by using the method of thematic analysis. Here pie charts were used to indicate neutrality, agreement and disagreement to the statements given. The results of this project indicate that there was...
