Define the following terms:

Term Definition
Ageism This is like Stereotyping and/or discriminating against people or groups because of their age.
Baby boomer This is the group of folks there were called baby boomers following World War II era. They were born between 1944 and 1964.
Americans with Disabilities Act This was known as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 this was a law that sets rules for the prevention of discrimination based on disability.
Visitability How well level of accessibility in order to meet Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines
Accessibility How well a physically challenged people I able to use the facility or place
Disability Limited ability to perform some tasks in life because of a problem that is sometimes out of there control
Inclusion addition to a group or mixture from someone or something
Deinstitutionalization To release a disabled person from a hospital or other institution with the intent of giving treatment or support under the care of professionals.
Special education Education that particularized for people having special learning abilities or disabilities.

Answer the following questions in 150 to 250 words each:

• What is being done to address the issues you identified?

As the group of people working reach retirement employers will have to review their workloads and find work that is more adapted for older people so they are not discriminated against. There is a program for the elderly now to help them stay independent but get there freedom and help with their life this program is called PACE it offers all the things that the elderly are trying to keep and allows them to maintain their independence and to stay in their homes and to maintain their quality of life. The program includes all there Medicare and Medicaid services that they have through their respective state. This organization provides all services that are determined to be necessary by a team of specialist. Basic services that are provided at the PACE center include primary care services, social services, restorative therapies, personal care and supportive services and meals. These Services will be available to all qualifying individuals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

• Is the number of gaining population expected to rise in numbers or decrease?

Nowadays we are all living in a world of huge demographic changes. We started out very slowly growing in history but now the population has doubled almost in the last century and we have reached 6 billion as of winter of 1999 and then in 2011 we surpassed 7 billion. Now this is because of a lower mortality rate and people are starting to live a longer life and younger populations are contributing to the rapid population growth. This growth though has it’s problem because all of this will take place in countries that are not as developed to handle the population serge and this will happen with the poorest populations because there lack of resources to do anything else but reproduce. With all these increased amount of people in the lower brackets this will cause a strain on the resources of multiple countries and ultimately can lead to a financial crash of the same systems that help these people.

• What types of legislation may or may not be affected by the aging population? It is important that we take a look at the demographic which is now producing an increasingly older population here in America. One thing is being look at is if the United States can handle the amount of things that will change by having this larger pool and if the government will be able to change to the number of the population will cause on the essentials such as jobs, retirement, and pensions. With this it could affect the health and overall well-being of the older population. This older group is nearly impossible to define and label because they are such a diverse group of people and this diversity is the reason we need to build on are older generation as an influence on the future of United states as this country's past was on them.

• How does poverty affect the ageing population?

With the era of the baby boomers becoming older there will be a rise in multiple of the basic services that are required with the increase of age. The demand for health services will increase thus causing an increase in the money needed to supply that and long term care facilities will need to expand to cover the possibly of more occupants both these combined will cause a strain on the public spending in that budget. This will create a challenge for the funding of all the public services and with the increase in the pensions this will put pressure on families and friends to figure a way that they can help support these new retirees. People will have to cover more of their own health costs which could increase the poverty level. If we don’t see changes to pensions and retirements this could cause companies to remove them from future generations’ packages. All these things could create tensions because older people will be seen as being the expense of workers particularly as the government puts more emphasis on individual responsibility.

• How have people with disabilities been treated in the past?

In today’s society the major influence in the United States is on inclusion and part of this would include the independent lifestyle for disabled people. This is because most all disabled people want to live a life that they control and is solely done by them. This is new to the people in the disabled American culture because they use to segregate the disabled people from all people to have them live in their own communities. The disabled people were taken away from their families and put in institutions because people thought it was for their good and they wouldn’t affect society as a whole. Most of the disabled people living in hospitals suffered from abuse and ended up having severe emotional distress because of the issues and physical abuse that happen to them from there caregivers. These disabled residents were called second-class people and given no respect. Caregivers gave no attempt to even care for the disabled patients even denying them things that affected their well-being.

• How has the attitude toward people with disabilities changed over time?

Up until the 1970's: The disabled routinely had forced lobotomies (front part of the brain removed) and sterilizations performed on them. The disabled were placed in institutions (by the government) and were often forgotten about thus forcing them to live in unsafe/ unsanitary conditions. In conditions that would be construed as "animal cruelty" if a kettle owner made their animals live in those very same conditions the disabled were forced to live in. Many were abused, neglected, and murdered either by family members or at the hands of institution workers. The word "Retarded" was used to describe everyone with a disability, regardless of the type of disability or the severity. While discrimination toward the disability is still rampant and the government shows little interest in eliminating disability discrimination, I'm happy to say "Both forced lobotomies and sterilizations are a thing of the past." While mental health will remain a very low priority, I'm happy to say "The disabled is no longer placed in mental institutions and forgotten about but instead are given a chance to live on their own and become productive citizens." While neglect and abuse is still high, I'm happy to say "Neglect and abuse has been on the declined due to better educating society about people with disabilities." While the word "Retarded" is still being used, I'm happy to say "That irritating word is not being used as prevalent."

• What are some unique circumstances or issues encountered by people with disabilities?

There are unfortaley some real harsh realities about being disabled and these are things that every disabled person will come across. They need very expensive equipment that is specialized to them and cannot usual is bought used to help lower costs and special medications are sometimes the greatest cost and may be required to be taken daily. While life becomes a bit easier with all these possible tools to help with the disability so does more expensive and too often with these items the ability to work may still not happen. With all this the financial security of a person is tried and things become uncertain for the future of the person which makes them fearful.

• What is being done to address those issues?

To stop these issues and address the problems we need to educate each person in the public so people are informed and can understand and embrace the disabilities they run across in there day to day life. To achieve this is by including all disabled people in the employment process for interviews and possible job placement. By providing this chance for employment opportunities for disabled people it will make a statement that can help more than just disabled people. It will say we don’t accept discrimination for any reasons. We need to invited people to training and education classes in the community with disabled people. Start to also increase the information about disabled people that is available for people to read and better understand what the issues are and how they can help. This all can be done by having an involved group of people who will create and contribute to various organizations.

• What types of legislation have been introduced to address issues faced by people with disabilities?

The history of ADA began many years back in small cities and big towns in the United States where people with disabilities started to challenge barriers that prevented them from being an active part of their communities. This people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities started the fight against the segregation of their children from normal activities in there community. This began with a simply but effective establishment of a group of advocates for the rights of people with disabilities. The first step was a movement for independent living so that people with disabilities didn’t need to be institutionalized. Because of this the group fought for and helped to provided services for the people with disabilities so that they could live in the community. This was now a change in the history of the treatment of people with disabilities because it stopped the history of "out of sight, out of mind" which was one of the worst items in the history of America.
