Chapter 19: Ethics Evaluation

List at least three alternatives available to Mike?
Alternative 1: Mike can eat lost time and only Alex and mike will know. 2. Mike should identify who will primarily be affected by his ethical dilemma (in this case and Dianne). He must reach out to her and explain the situation 3. Mike checks down the actual occured time and simply tells his senior(Alex) about how he was not comfortable with eating time.

What are the pros or potential upside of each alternative you listed above?
Alternative 1: Dianne may be impressed by him on finishing on time and Mike and Alex may receive good evaluation. 2. Dianne may appreciate Mike's honesty and grant him more time. 3. Alex could be in trouble however the future staff auditors won't be pressured too much and this may help seniors learn more about young staff auditors

What are the cons or potential downside of each alternative?
Alternative 1. Since Mike ate time, the seniors won't learn their lesson and they'll continue to put pressure on the future staff auditors and the next year budget will only be six hours. 2. Dianne may say the same thing as Alex and Alex will probably get angry at Mike for going around his back to talk to Dianne. Mike may risk his future at the company. 3. Mike may still risk his future at the company or at least get a bad evaluation. Both of those will make his school look bad.

What are the implications of "eating time" for Mike, the firm, and others involved?
" Mike may come across another ethical challenge and he may become less reasonable in determining his ethical standards.
This may also could lead the firm to believe that a job like this could be done is six hours and may impose that time on the future staff auditors which will put them in the same position as Mike. Since those future staff auditors won't be able to

Ethical Challenges

...Ethical Challenges 1. You are an executive for a U.S. oil firm interested in forming a partnership with an Iranian oil producer. This will be a challenge because of the poor relations between the United States and Iran over the years. Since the early 1980s the United States has drawn fire from the business community for imposing economic sanctions (similar to an embargo) against Iran for primarily political reasons. Those sanctions disallow international trade and investment between U.S. and Iranian businesspeople. Business leaders in the United States would like the sanctions removed so they can be included in lucrative Iranian oil and gas deals in which firms from other countries are engaging. Other sanction opponents wonder if a policy of offering “all stick and no carrot” is undermining social and political change in Iran because the offending regime goes largely unpunished while ordinary citizens suffer. What arguments would you present to the U.S. government for removing sanctions on Iran? Do you think that one country, acting alone, can bring about reforms through the use of economic sanctions or embargoes? 2. You are the president of a sugar company based in southern Florida. Your firm is struggling lately to meet demand because of poor harvests in the Caribbean Islands, where your firm sources much of its raw product. Because of the Helms–Burton Act and the U.S. embargo on Cuba, your firm is not allowed to trade with Cuba. If the embargo were dropped, your firm would...

Hyundai Ethical Challenges

...What are the greatest ethical challenges for Hyundai? Over the years Hyundai has had its share of ethical challenges to overcome. Probably the most notable of these challenges was the prosecution and subsequent conviction of the Chairman, Chung Mong Koo in 2006 for embezzling funds. Chung was essentially responsible for turning Hyundai into the global success that it was and is today so this had an enormous impact on the future of the company. He was accused of making questionable deals that benefitted him and his son and he was sentenced to three years in prison; however in September of 2007 he was granted a suspension of the three year prison sentence due to the fact that his imprisonment and the impact on Hyundai would negatively affect the Korean economy. Chung promised to donate $1 billion if he was freed and in February 2008 he was re-elected as the Chairman of Hyundai Motors. According to the text, this behavior is that of an immoral manager. Chung was obviously not interested in what was “the right thing to do” but was more interested in his own best interests and that of his family. He put the reputation and image of Hyundai at risk. However, given the economy in Korea and the political issues that exist there he basically got a slap on the hand and was allowed to be reinstated. This ethical challenge of immoral behavior did have some impact on their reputation; however given the fact that they are still one of the leading auto makers in the world, obviously...

...Thesis: The challenges of being a single parent include managing finances, responsibilities and resources The challenge of being a single parent has become harder over time. The fact is that over time things have changed but not for a single parent. Statics show that there has been a steady rise for five decades and that the births to unmarried women has crossed a threshold. An example of this would be, a single mom that can’t provide day care for her child because her income is not enough to pay the bills and day care. The challenges of being a single parent include, managing finances, responsibilities and resources, their work is never done nor are their struggles. One of the challenges a single mom has raising her son and daughter would be getting up at 4am taking 3 buses to transport her children to her mother (who lives on the other side of town). Spending 2 hours getting there and another 3 buses and a hour and a half getting to work. There is a limit on everything she does because she does not have the opportunity to get an education, she has to work and provide for her family. Pawning valuables to make ends meet when money is short, living from pay check to pay check. Child support is another challenge for a single mom when the children’s father does not work, all the financial responsibility is on the single parent. Another challenge to a single mom is that because she is a woman, to keep from being taken advantage of, she will pay more money for rent to keep...

Workplace Difficulties

...Women face greater challenges at the workplace. Do you agree or disagree? Write an essay, giving reasons to support your viewpoint. A photograph recently caught my attention. It was a mother carrying her 18 month old daughter in one hand and a document in the other. What’s special about it? She is a member of the European Parliament, Licia Ronzulli, and this photograph was taken when she was addressing the parliament. This epitomizes modern motherhood, and takes multitasking to new dimensions. Just stringing together the two words “women” and “workplace” automatically conjures the third word in our mind- “Challenge”. But as work places are constantly evolving, what one perceives as a challenge is indeed changing. A few decades ago nurse , receptionist or secretary was all a working woman could aspire to be. Any woman who dreamed beyond was ridiculed and her integrity was questioned. Corporates viewed women as weaker and less committed than male counterparts. “Lady Candidates Need Not Apply”- was the common last line in job advertisements. Those 5 words in a ‘TELCO’ advertisement sparked Sudha Murthy to send the famous postcard to JRD Tata in 1974 saying “I am surprised how a company such as Telco is discriminating on the basis of gender”. When I first walked through TML factory, I wondered how Sudha would have felt 37 years before, knowing that hers were the first feminine footsteps there. Did she possibly know then that she had taken a giant leap for her kind in TELCO...
