In order to be able to be a successful leader, you need to be patient and have motivation and the heart to do your job. A police officer's duties can vary in many forms. We live in a not so safe community. Our day begins in Korea town on the intersections of Hoover and Olympic. We get a call of a robbery in progress. Second problem is from the 711 on the corners of James M. Wood and Westmoreland we have a drunk suspicious male wanting to disrupt the peace. Third problem is a family dispute on Pico and Catalina. As the Sergeant I need to make sure that these problems are addressed properly without no misconduct. I want to make sure that my team does a good job and that they demonstrate professionalism in every way. And most of all restore the peace in all three situations. Leadership "refers to a process that helps direct and mobilize people and their ideas." (Kotter, 1190). The impact of leadership on organizations is crucial to its long-term capability to function effectively and meet anticipated changing environmental demands. To be successful, organizations must endeavor to meet all their goals.
Let's start with the robbery taking place on Hoover and Olympic. The eye witnesses see a suspect in his late 20's tall Hispanic male wearing all black fleeing the scene on foot going South on Hoover St. Police officers go on pursuit to see if they can catch up to the assailant and they approach a gentleman fitting that description. They approach him and detain him. With him he has several items that he took from the store. They read him his rights and arrest him. Everything is done in a professional manner. No one was hurt. My other team responds to the 711. There they encounter a African American male in his late 30's screaming obscenities to bystanders and the police officers as well. The officers tell him that he needs to calm down, that he's disturbing the peace, there's kids around and he's creating panic around them. He has no weapons, but he does have a loud mouth. The officers approach him when he's caught off guard, handcuff him for their own safety. High Crimes 3

They read him his rights and arrest him for disturbing the peace. We finish with the family dispute on Pico. The officers arrive to a scene where the husband and wife are arguing. The wife states that the husband tried to hit her and that she was enraged, went outside and she got a frying pan to protect herself from her husband, and if he did touch her she would've defended herself by hitting him with the frying pan. One police officer speaks with the wife and the other with the husband. Both of them don't have any visible injuries. They ask the wife if the husband hit her and she said no, that he had just threatened her to hit her but didn't. It was a jealousy argument, and she really didn't feel safe to be around him because he was very enraged. They just told the husband that he needed to leave to cool off, and to leave the wife alone. If things got worse to call the police again. It was a verbal dispute but no one was physically hurt. The Officers made sure he left and restored the peace to this home. They followed up with the wife and she stated that they worked out their differences.

If these stories were to be true, it would be hard to believe. We live in a community where you find people killing each other for non sense. It's very tough to be a sergeant. Their duties are very stressful. Dealing with different problems every single day in a community is hard. But as a Sergeant it is their duties to make sure things don’t get out of hand. Officers have choices in how and whom they will enforce the law or implement policy and procedures. An organization must, on one hand, survive and maintain some sense of internal stability and protect its established routines in order to deliver services successfully. (Nelson and Winter 1982). On the other hand, it must provide services by means that are congruent with community preferences. The presentation of an organization as possessing crucial High crimes 4

expertise, dedicated members, and dynamic leadership will be held in high esyteem by community members. Agencies that present themselves as "rational" and goal-directed will typically enjoy higher status with legislative bodies and be able to compete favorably for resources.
( Greene, Bynum, and Cordner, 1986). In order to be a good leader we must know how to communicate. Communication is key to everything we cannot lack communication. Poor communication can be a great obstacle. I hope one day I can become a leader or at least someone that people look up to. To help communities in need.

She articulates, “In today’s financially driven business environment, Max De Pree helps readers to pause, take a deep breath, and examine their own personal ‘art of leadership.’ This is an extraordinary book that avoids quick management theory and brings the reader back to the reality that human values form the basis for extraordinary leadership” (De Pree, n.pag.).
