The Case of the Mysterious Roses
The ethical issue that presented itself in “The Case of the Mysterious Roses” is the concern of an employee in regard to possible harassment in the workplace. The employee has been the subject of unsolicited attention and requests a confidential meeting. The author must make a decision on how to handle both the confidentiality of the meeting and how to proceed with the harassment claim.
According to the companies Employee Handbook, there are several policy violations in this simulation, including several breaches of the harassment policy ("Archived E-Mails & Comments," n.d.). These are clear breaches of company policy, however; in a management roll, the author must walk a narrow line to address the harassment issue at hand as well as follows the company’s policies in regard to preventing and addressing harassment issues and treating employees fairly. The Rights and Reputation Lens most helped the decision to address these issues, as this is the lens rooted in deontology, which focuses on humanities duties to the community (Baird, 2011).
Although the Rights/Responsibilities Lens played the largest part in how the author choose to address the harassment issues, the result comes off as a bit calculated and non-sympathetic. If the Results Lens was the primary lead, which is a preferred lens of the author, the possibility of a more harmonious workplace exists. A choice to follow the rules to the letter is technically correct, empathy shown in this situation would lead to a more harmonious workplace in regard to the rights of all involved.
Harassment in the workplace is a serious problem and although a show of empathy would be acceptable, the author stands by the more rigid stance of viewing the problem through the Rights/Responsibilities Lens. As harassment is such a
