To be able to understand virtue theory we first need to understand what virtue itself means. Virtue is an admirable trait; “behavior showing high moral standards” Virtue theory focuses more on individual, and their characteristics. It is what is needed to be able to live a good life. It comes down to “how we should be” in order to be happy. “Deontology and utilitarianism look at what we should do, and this is separated from personal desires and inclinations.” They are distinctive qualities, which are seen to be “virtuous” wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance to name a few. Utilitarianism is a theory that basically aims to have the best possible pleasure over pain or greatest happiness. The ethical principle of this theory is an action is right as long as it leads to happiness not only for oneself but anyone else who is affected by it. The consequence of an act is a huge part of utilitarianism. “The theory allows for degrees of right and wrong, and for every situation the choice between actions is clear cut, always choose that which has the greatest utility.” Deontological ethics place special emphasis on the relationship between duty and the morality of human actions. Its main focus is on logic and ethics, rather than moral obligations. An action can be considered to be morally good because of the characteristics of the action itself rather than because the product of the action is good. A couple of years I realized that in order for me to do well in life and be able to provide for my family I would need to have a stable career.
