Analysis of data (p7)
A management information system allows the collection, process and organization of information through the usage of computers. These management information systems are mostly numerical based and include numbers and figures relating to areas such as sales. The information is presented from raw data into a form that is easily comprehended and understood by the users, making the data collected user friendly. The usage of an MIS is that it can help managers make vital decisions about the business and monitor the progress and flow of the business. They can help high up members of staff understand the ins and outs of the business without in depth knowledge of the numerical information involved. An MIS is vital in most modern companies, but the information provided to the system has to be accurate and up to data in order for it to become truly effective and efficient. The data in the system can be used to compare different sets of data from other companies and previous years, detecting trends and spotting niche areas. Data that has been previously entered can be analysed and used to anticipate future events, this is called forecasting or predictive modelling. However the uses of an MIS can be limited, typically they are less reliable when dealing with non numerical data and the quality, reliability and validity of the information produced by the system entirely dependent on the quality, reliability and validity of the information entered into the system in the first place.
Information systems are designed to improve the overall day to day running of a business, there are several key elements which can effect these information systems, they are; * Data * People * Hardware * Software * Communications

Data
An information system runs on the data that is inputted into it, thus all data entered must be accurate, valid, reliable

Case: Reducing Supplier Evaluation Cycle Time

...months=3 yrs | Late 1990 | 24 months=2 yrs | mid1980s to 2003 | 18 months= 1.5yrs | As Emily thought about what she had heard, she came to two conclusions. First, the food products industry was beginning to see the same kinds of market pressures that rapidly changing industries, such as automobiles and electronics, have experienced for many years. For example, she knew that the life cycles of her company’s products were getting shorter and shorter. Second, Emily knew very well that while not all supplier evaluation and selection decisions originated during the development of new products, many of the critical selection decisions were the result of new product needs. Other point that Emily was very interesting is analyze to reduce the time it takes to evaluate and select suppliers by 30 percent, 40 percent, or even 50 percent. Questions: 1. Why should companies commit time and resources to evaluate and select suppliers? The evaluation and selection of supplier is one of the most important functions of business. A focus on selecting only the best supplier possible will make a major contribution to the competitiveness of entire...

...Lesson 13: Investing in Mutual Funds What is a mutual fund? * A mutual fund is a professionally managed pool of money invested in stocks, bonds and other securities. * By purchasing mutual funds, small investors can easily diversify their investments and enjoy the benefits of professional management. * Investors own units or shares in the fund and benefit proportionately from any increase in value and/or income earned by the investments owned by the fund. The Reasons Investors Choose Mutual Funds | Mutual funds have grown in importance in Canada over the last twenty-five years. As of February 2008, there were 2,038 mutual funds with a total worth of nearly $679 billion – up from only $3.5 billion in 1981.The two major reasons investors choose mutual funds are: 1. Professional management - although there is no guarantee that the fund will outperform the market. 2. Diversification - by asset class (i.e. by holding a mix of stocks, bonds and money market investments) or within each asset class (i.e. by holding a variety of securities within each class). The risk of mutual funds arises from the risks associated with the investments they hold. * For example, a bond fund will be subject to interest rate risk – as interest rates rise, the value of the bonds owned by the fund will decline. | Mutual Funds With and Without Loads A load is a sales commission. In a load fund, the investor pays a commission every time he or she buys units (front-end load)...

...degree is reasonable, however, this request, superficially, is not the necessary to evaluate the efficiency of a public official. Since, depending on various certain situation, some other additional factors and charters, such as tenacity, fedelity, humility and social deftness, should also be emphasized. To begin with, to maintain a relative high level of moral and ethical standard could be an essential character for an effective leader.
