The film Away From Her (Egoyan, et al., 2006) shows viewers how the disease can greatly impact your life, and how quickly it can form. The film was based off of a short story “The Bear Came over the Mountain” by Alice Munro (Munro, 2013). In both works, the author and the director portray a significant struggle between a husband and wife dealing with Alzheimer’s. Summary of Story In the short story “The Bear Came over the Mountain” (Munro, 2013) and the film Away From Her (Egoyan, et al., 2006), both authors portray almost the same points. The main characters, Fiona Anderson and her husband Grant Anderson, have been married for forty four years. Fiona’s brain has been slowly deteriorating due to her disease, Alzheimer’s. Fiona and her husband decide that she has gone past the point of no return and needs more supervised care. They check her into Meadowlake facility and Grant is told that he cannot see Fiona for thirty days, so she can get acclimated to her surroundings. He returns after the 30 days to find that his wife has forgotten who he was and has connected with another patient named Aubrey (Egoyan, et al., 2006). ...I have learned that judgment is very important when evaluating. Evaluation is another important lesson that I have learned. This has also helped me become better at evaluating essays. Amitai Etzioni’s essay, Working at McDonald’s has helped me understand what evaluation simply is. Etzioni uses examples such as “McDonald’s is bad for your kids.” (par. 1) “We know that’s a strong topic sentence to start with. A few more examples are, “Closer examination, however, finds the McDonald’s kind of job highly uneducational in several ways. Landauer, University of Colorado Abstract The Intelligent Essay Assessor (IEA) is a set of software tools for scoring the quality of essay content. The IEA uses Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), which is both a computational model of human knowledge representation and a method for extracting semantic similarity of words and passages from text. Simulations of psycholinguistic phenomena show that LSA reflects similarities of human meaning effectively. To assess essay quality, LSA is first trained on domain-representative text. Then student essays are characterized by LSA representations of the meaning of the words used, and they are compared with essays of known quality in regard to their degree of conceptual relevance and the amount of relevant content. Over many diverse topics, the IEA scores agreed with human experts as accurately as expert scores agreed with each other.
