Firm Overview and Introduction to the Case
Evergreen Natural Markets was founded by Donald Slater as a small seasonal produce stand which grew into an organic grocery store. With Slater’s success he was approached for business advice which lead him to acquire other grocery stores while keeping former proprietors on as management, which lead to the formula for partnering with the managers of acquired stores. After Slater’s death in 1998, his daughter Kathleen (Slater) Norton took over the Evergreen Markets as CEO and continued expanding the company holding on to the value that her father had placed on partnering with managers of acquired stores and expanding the core values of Evergreen Nature Markets. As Evergreen Natural Markets expanding they also added a distribution center which offered a number of benefits like in-store inventory reduction and fewer stock-outs of canned and packaged goods, which increased operation margins. As competition started to move into the Rocky Mountain West area Evergreen Markets decided to expand outside of the normal area by acquiring Arugula Grocers a seven store natural food chain in Nevada. In the acquisition of Arugula Grocers issues and problems Evergreen Natural Markets are whether Evergreen Natural Markets have the best control systems to deal with the expansion in to the Nevada Market. With increasing competition from Trader Joe’s opening their first store in Colorado and the merger of Sunflower Farmers Market and Sprouts Farmers Market which had a solid presence in the Rocky Mountain region Evergreen took the bold move of expanding into new geographical territory in order to pursue new growth while continuing to defending existing market in the Rockies.
