...Conflict is an unavoidable part of life, and is seen in many shapes and form, such as global conflict, religious conflict, interpersonal conflict, cultural conflict and many others. However, the responses and consequences are largely dependent on the perspective, attitude and actions of all parties involved. All of these factors play a large role in whether the best or worst is brought out in people. While in the midst on conflict, ordinary individuals are able go above and beyond the conflict, bringing out their best qualities. Conflict has given them the perfect opportunity to shine, and allowing them to become an inspiration and role model to others. Malala Yousafzai was a advocate for education for girls, leading her to be targeted and shot by the Taliban. Malala survived, and bounced back stronger than ever. She now speaks on the importance of education. Malala stated “I don’t want revenge on the Taliban, I want education for sons and daughter of the Taliban.” Malala’s best personal traits where bought out, although she was already compassionate, kind and forgiving, she was able to take this a step further and share this with the rest of the world. Muscular strength is the amount of force a person can put out or the amount of weight they can lift. Muscular endurance is how many times you can move that weight without getting exhausted. Aerobic training is nonstop exercising such as running, swimming, as we as circuit training. These exercises are designed to improve the effectiveness of the cardiorespiratory system to deliver oxygen to working muscles. Aerobic training involves the larger muscle groups to combine with the cardiorespiratory system to supply an innovative volume of oxygen to the working muscles to recover performance. Anaerobic training is high intensity and short amount of time of exercise. There are frequent rushes over short distances at high force and are designed to increase the two energy pathways as the major supply of energy and is aimed to rise acceptance to lactic acid. ...Talent is often linked to success, and for some that is everything, especially when you grow up a part of getting it is by hard work. The other half is by talents, but how can you obtain success without talents? That is the question that is asked in “Every Good Boy” by David Nicholls. Here we follow a boy with absolutely no abilities at all, trying to find what he is particular good at. So when he gets the opportunity to get a free piano he will do anything to show his talents. The whole story is buildup of the narrator Michael’s flashbacks about his experiences with developing his talents. He constantly compares himself to his siblings which are incredible talented. I decided to choose the “Tortoise and the Hare.” Once upon a time there was a hare that kept bragging about how fast he could run and that he was faster that everyone else, he also was harshly teasing the tortoise for how slow he was. Then one day, the irritated tortoise answered back: “Who do you think you are? You sure are fast, but you can be beat!” The hare exclaimed with laughter. “Beaten in a race? By who you, I bet there’s nobody in the world that can win against me I’m so fast. Now, why don’t you try?” annoyed by all the bragging, the tortoise accepted the challenge. The society expects us to find something we are good at, and use it in the society. Whether you are doing well in school or are good at an instrument. This is very important, as all kids demand constant attention and an equal level of praise. Many children are born with imposing talent and an impelling need to show it. In this case, he has the latter. The story is written by David Nicholls and we follow the first-person narrator, a 9-year old boy living with his family. The story is based on events that occurred in chronological order in the past. Throughout the story he strives to improve his piano skills hoping someday to be acknowledged for his efforts. ...There is a scene in Taare Zameen Par when the protagonist Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) runs away from school and loiters on the road for the whole day – for the fear of being punished for not having done his homework. I never did anything like that in school but keep doing it regularly once I started work. The comparison might not be warranted but this is just one of those scenes which made me relate to Ishaan’s plight in the movie. On paper, this is the story of a kid suffering from dyslexia and how with the help of an understanding teacher he overcomes it against all odds. But honestly (and more importantly) this is an open indictment of our education system and parents…and their frenzy to produce “winners”. There have been films in the past like Bommarillu and Good Will Hunting which have tackled the issue of an individual’s own inclinations coming in conflict the rest-of-the-world’s perception of what is best for them. Taare is probably more timely and significant because it deals with a phase of life where one is hardly aware of a thing called “choice”/”interest”/”inclination” and so is very likely to shrivel and retreat into a shell (too young to understand that he/she is just different but not wrong)….when figures of authority simply pronounce judgements rather than trying to understand the problem an individual is facing. ...A fascinating and powerful narrative, “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison, tells the story of two girls, Twyla and Roberta, who share quite a complicated relationship. From the time they meet at St. Bonaventure, an orphanage, at the tender age of eight to when they become adults and start leading lives of their own, they are plagued by their racial, social, and economical differences. One of the most interesting aspects of the short story is the symbolism of Maggie, a disabled woman who works at the orphanage, and the tremendous impact she has on Twyla and Roberta. Numerous critics have analyzed the portrayal of Maggie in the story, and have come to some varied conclusions. In my opinion, as Twyla and Roberta are reunited with one another through the course of their lives, they slowly begin to see and accept that Maggie is a reflection of their mothers, and – to a larger extent – also themselves. The issues explored in “Recitatif” resonate with many readers on many different levels and, in effect, much has been written and discussed about it.
