In the pilot of the show, we learn the basic premise of Everybody Hate Chris, a semi-autobiographical sitcom in which Chris Rock recounts his middle-school experience in early 1980's Brooklyn. We learn that the Rock family has just moved out of the projects and into an apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant Young Chris is excited about the move, however his excitement diminishes when his mother tells him that he will be taking two buses every day to become the only black student at Corleone Middle School. In this way, two social issues serve as inspiration for the bulk of the show’s comedic content. In Chris’s home life, the issue of class are largely explored, while Chris’s struggles at Corleone Middle School seem to focus on questions of race. …show more content…
International media companies strongly prefer universal and highly relatable comedies when looking to pick up American sitcoms; however, this usually just means white, middle-class, family-focused shows. Something of the Home Improvement variety. Thus this white, middle-class experience becomes the ubiquitous standard of living, something that will appeal to everyone in the international TV marketplace. Using this “whiteness”, any show that deviates from this norm, such as those sitcoms that incorporate black slang, hip-hop culture, racial politics, and working-class settings, automatically get brand as “ethnic” and are only shown on either the single nights networks used to have dedicated to black entertainment or on niche networks, like BET. Yet, the breakthrough success of The Cosby Show finally allowed for a way out of this particular network configuration. The show’s producers would not make any explicit references to the politics of race and keep the narratives focused on “universal” family themes in exchange for a white viewership. But because white audiences have historically associated poverty with “blackness” and classified middle-class status as “white”, these family-friendly stories were placed in a context of wealth and class privilege on The Cosby Show. The commercial success of The Cosby Show has left an upsetting legacy: to get on the air, class must be

Everybody Hates Chris, a Tv Show

...Everybody Hates Chris, a TV Show Amy M. Lazar SOC315 November 29, 2010 Kurt Konda Everybody Hates Chris, a TV Show Everybody Hates Chris is an American situation comedy inspired by the teenage experiences of comedian Chris Rock while growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York from 1985 to 1989. Motivated by his childhood experiences, Emmy comedian Chris Rock narrates this very hilarious and touching story of a teenager growing up as the oldest of three children in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1980s. Uprooted to a neighborhood and bused into a primarily white middle school two hours away by his strict, hard-working parents. This writer will show how this TV show attempted to address diversity in the American and how. In addition, how the show relied on stereotypes when depicting certain groups. Finally, this writer will provide her opinion to whether or not she believes this show fostered a better understanding of diversity and multiculturalism. This show revolves around the everyday life of Chris. Chris is a 13-year-old seventh grade student. The writers on this show along with Chris Rock attempted to address diversity or the lack there of by pulling no punches and apologizing for nothing, no culture or race was safe. They rely heavily on humor and narration provided by Chris Rock himself. He takes on that “inner voice” per say and says aloud what one would usually keep to themselves. The show takes place in the late 1980’s and the groups of...

...Dorothy Roberts in her books speaks directly on issue affecting African American women whether social or moral such as: gender segregation, mistreatment, oversexed all of these all in a negative way. Yes, many persons are of the view that the topic of Africans in general is one of pity, desperations, poverty and worthlessness. So much so, that when it involves African women the thoughts even goes much deeper to a great extent. Enslaved African women were dealt with like animals rather than children. They were forced to take part in long stretches of physically requesting fieldwork and regarded pretty much as cruelly as subjugated African men. Furthermore, subjugated African women were beaten and over and again raped. African women were not regarded as woman, yet were spoken to and esteemed as sexual objectives and workers. Racism and gender discrimination towards African women has also been around from the days of slavery, with whites abusing and mistreating African women who worked on their plantations. Because of this sexual abuse, many African women were given sterilization in order to suppress fertility in black women and to reduce the burden of unwanted pregnancy on society. There are delights and distresses that most moms share. They are the delight of nursing her child, the depletion from pursuing her toddler, the satisfaction of viewing her kid accomplish whatever goal, the dread of undesirable pregnancy and the lose faith in regards to surrendering yet another dream to...

Stereotypes

...really show how our society looks at different races. Stereotypes can be seen very well in particularly “Everybody Hates Chris” and “George Lopez.” In both of this series, the writers make it a huge focus on how stereotypes are given to people with a certain race. Both shows I will analyze to show the positive and negative stereo types that are shown. Everybody Hates Chris is a show that many ethnic groups can connect and relate to. The show is about an African American 13 year old that lives in the projects of New York City. After leaving their old house, the family moves to the “nicer” side of Bed Stuy during a crack epidemic. Instead of going to his local high school, his parents force him to go an all-white high school in the safer part of the city. Chris doesn’t want to go because he will be the only black kid and doesn’t know anybody at the school. During the first day of school Chris is walking down the hallway when a white classmate steps on his shoes and knocks over his textbooks. Next the classmate insults Chris by saying “nice shoes bojangles” and Chris immediately replies “Bojangles? , that’s not what your mother was calling me when I was tap dancing in her pants last night .” The crowd around them gasps in shock and the classmate instantly lands a punch on Chris right in the stomach and falls on the principle. Right after he falls, the principal suspends Chris from school for fighting (Rock, 2012). Another show that all races can relate to is the popular George...
