Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope" (Fitzgerald 2). Reserving judgment hasn't always benifited Nick. People such as Gatsby in the beginning and Tom take advantage of his kindness. Tom makes Nick meet his mistress even though he was highly uncomfortable with the situation. While he was with Tom, Nick gets drunk for the second time in his life. Nick tends to be a moral compass and getting drunk is not something he would do. He is afraid of offending someone, so he goes along with the situatione which leds to poor choices. Examples Of Daisy's Ambition In The Great Gatsby

...Jay Gatsby also had this ambition for his dream to come true. His ambitions were matched with greed and money which in the end won. Gatsby has pushed through obstacles and difficulties in order to become a wealthy person. For the average person that would be the American dream, but for Gatsby it was more than just money, it was love. Gatsby’s American dream was to be with Daisy, in any and all capacities- no matter what, he didn't care what it took, he wanted to be with her. Gatsby loved Daisy and would do anything for her, he fell in love with her 5 years earlier and never seen her again until just recently. All Gatsby wanted to do was be with Daisy he would give up all of his wealth for her, his loved blinded him and this eventually led to his downfall. He does things he normally would not do and if it weren't for Daisy Myrtle would still be alive. I do not think Daisy cares about Gatsby the way he cares for her because she did not attend his funeral and she did not run away with him. Daisy did not know what to say when she first saw him which is a bad sign she did not really show any excitement, this is shown when it says,...

Why Is The Great Gatsby Great

...One of the greatest debates in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is whether or not the titular character, Jay Gatsby, is indeed great. At the heart of this debate is whether or not he is a romantic man whose rags-to-riches rise is to be admired or a dishonest conman and criminal. Other people may not like him because of the way he got his money. The main things that shows that Gatsby is a good man is how he is ambitions, humble, romantic relationship with Daisy. One of Gatsby’s most admirable traits is his ambition, which led him to rise from poverty to spectacular wealth. Gatsby grew up poor in rural North Dakota, but he was determined from his youth to transcend his humble beginnings. One example of this early determination is seen when...

Gatsby Quote Analysis

...incredible talent of catching the reader’s attention by his extravagant writing style. An example of his writing style is shown through his novel The Great Gatsby. Throughout the story, Nick Carraway carries the reader through an incredible love triangle in the Jazz Age. In Chapter One, Nick meets at Daisy’s house for lunch and Daisy takes Nick outside for a talk. During their talk, Daisy tells him about the birth of her daughter by saying, “She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. ‘All right,’ I said. ‘I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.’” Daisy makes this statement because in the time that the novel was based, women’s intelligence was not valued. Through this, she expresses her own boredom with life and thinks as though a girl would have more fun if she was careless and beautiful. Daisy does not want her daughter to live the same kind of life that she has. Instead, she just wants her daughter to enjoy life and be simple. In Chapter Seven, Nick was trying to describe what Daisy’s voice was like to him when Gatsby makes the remark, “Her voice is full of money.” This quote shows the reader why Gatsby is so infatuated with Daisy. In his mind, money is the source of all happiness. Daisy stood as the perfect upper class figure to him. She had always been wealthy and Gatsby always strived to be wealthy. When he was creating his future, everything he did revolved...

What Does The Color Green Symbolize In The Great Gatsby

...In the novel The Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses colors not only literally but also figuratively. The use of color imagery gives the characters more depth, and it also gives readers a deeper understanding of the characters. For example, Fitzgerald often associates the color green with Jay Gatsby. The color green has various cultural connotations that fit ideally with Gatsby’s jealousy, wealth, and hope, along with the sense of safety with which he is able to provide Daisy. Commonly colors are linked to feelings, and green is often given the label of jealousy and envy. This negative connotation of the color green ties in fittingly with Gatsby’s feelings throughout the novel. One does not have to look far to see that Gatsby is jealous of Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s husband. During their second encounter, Gatsby tells Tom that he knows his wife, “almost aggressively” (108). He is clearly jealous of their marriage and wishes to make it obvious that he has already established a relationship with Daisy....

Falls and Rises of Jay Gatsby

...Falls and Rises of Jay Gatsby Having read a genuine masterpiece by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald titled “The Great Gatsby”, I am obliged to state that this great book reminds me of another, not in the least minor, work of Jack London titled “Martin Eden”. They are both about great falls and great rises of a men pursuing happiness; lonely, struggling against Destiny and following their Dream. But what are the falls and rises in these two books that I call great? First of all, I would like to present you the London’s book. The story runs about a 21-year-old sailor who by a sheer coincidence finds himself in an apartment of a wealthy man whose son he had protected from ruffians. In the home, he is enthralled by the college-age daughter, Ruth Morse, having never encountered such a vision of feminine purity before. Spurred by his growing affection, Martin determines to live by his brain rather than his back: he will be an author. He gets to reading loads of books in public libraries, educates himself, gives up sailing and starts writing stories and sends them to different magazines to be published. But he is ignored by the publishers and is forced to live from hand to mouth. But he is inspired , enchanted by the purity, brightness of Ruth, thinks her ideal. In  order to enable himself to match on her, he must upward crawl diligently. The more books he reads, the less attractive his own circle seems to him – the circle of working people, people of routine, people...

Setting

...The Great Gatsby is a wonderful story representing the American soul, which successfully portrayed the cheers and tears of the 1920’s, or “roaring 20’s” in United States, the reality under disguised of surreal fantasy of commercialism and materialism. In this story, there were three significant places the storyline breed and grows. Among them, the most significant West Egg, the settlement for Nouveau Riche, filled with residences who believe they achieved the American Dream, but in fact, ruined by the Dream; besides, the East Egg, a place for the proud “old money”, that believe themselves as “born and breed riches”, the upper class, represent the ultimate goal of American Dreams, that is empty and shallow. Last but not least, The Valley of Ashes, sheltered the people who blindfolded by American Dream, spent days and nights to serve the riches and believe that one day they’ll become one, and who at last realized that the dream bring nothing but destruction. First, the nouveau rich settlement in Long Island, the West Egg, is a shelter for sad people who thought themselves work hard enough and achieved the American Dream. In the beginning of the story, the narrator, Nick Carraway told us about his background as an “old money” descendent, but decided to venture out his comfort shelter, in search of a new and independent life. Nick eventually became a neighbor of Jay Gatsby, a rich man who throws party almost every day, in the West Egg. We can see the crassness of the house in West...

The Ambitious Nightmare

...Quincy Francis Mrs. McFeely AP Lang and Comp The ambitious nightmare Is the American Dream still alive today? It all depends on whom you ask, and how you look at things. Everyone sees things differently and will interpret it that way; to one person the American Dream is just that, a dream and when they wake up it will be a nightmare, and to another it is an ambition, that just makes them want it more. By definition the American Dream is: “a national ethos of the United States, a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers.” So, the question remains, is it still alive today, and is this really how people are living their lives? As sad as this answer may be, the truth is, probably not, like all good things they must end. The American Dream is a great thing to wish for however, it has been lost in time with the unwillingness to pursue it. The saddest thing is that some people believe the American dream is something that exists today; whereas some people in society have no idea that this dream exists. What ever happened to the zeal that drove America to the top? What happened to the aspiration of striving for greatness and becoming that greatness? That may be a question no one knows the answer too or it is an answer that people are unwilling to give. George Carlin once said, “The reason they call it the American...

The Great Gatsby

...Exploring The Many Themes Of The Great Gatsby “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald There are many messages authors try to send the readers when they write books, but at the end of the day, people receive different messages from the masterpiece. The Great Gatsby Essay

...Tyler Landry Mrs. Potter American Studies, English July 22, 2015 The Great Gatsby Essay Just after the World War 1, in the US there had been huge changes that involved all aspects of American life, including a tendency towards materialism, changes in clothing, women getting the right to vote gangster life emerging, parties and dances, and most importantly the American Dream. Fitzgerald’s novel define that American dream changed by time; the first time for European living in America was American dream, and originally any discovery which gave them happiness was American dream, but in the ear of 20s mean for American dream has become perverted into desire for wealth by whatever means; thinking that money will bring happiness. The Great Gatsby, was published in this era; therefore; it gives us a vivid portrayal of that time by demonstrating symbols and character behavior the impossibility of American dream. The characters that Fitzgerald describes in his novel all tie in with many aspect of the 1920s lifestyle. Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun

... Females and minorities in heterogeneous societies will face discrimination for the simple fact they are females or minorities which hinders them from obtaining an education, job, or reaching their goals. In Michelle Obama’s biography it says, “African American students recall newspapers slipped under their door with op-eds arguing that their presence on campus brought down university intellectual standards” (Mundy 66). At Princeton, Michelle and many African Americans experience racial discrimination that makes them feel unwelcome and unworthy of attending the university. Although they feel unwelcome, this feeling only pushes Michelle and others to work harder to prove their worth so they can make it. Ghada, a female student, gives an example of the sexism and discrimination, when she states, “Despite the fact that I was rated first in my class, when we had an open day in the school the boy after me gave the students' speech” (Makkawi). The superintendent would not allow Ghada to deliver the students’ speech because she is a female, fearing it would be a disgrace for her to stand in front of the village and give the speech. The superintendent’s actions acknowledge the sexism and discrimination of females in the community and lessens the value of the hard work Ghada put in to be first in her class. When Walter’s family is disappointed in his decision to call Mr. Lindner to accept the money instead of moving into an all white neighborhood, Walter responds, “I tell you I am a man—and...

Janie In The Great Gatsby And Their Eyes Were Watching God

...When comparing Gatsby and Janie in The Great Gatsby, and Their Eyes Were Watching God, Gatsby was the more hopeful person. He took initiative and tried desperately to win back the love of his life. Janie, although not as hopeful, took initiative as well, and tried to gain control of her life. In trying to accomplish similar goals, both go through a degree of maturity. But, even though Janie hated Nanny because Nanny told her to marry someone rich and not for her to follow her dreams, due to the fact that Janie had Nanny to teach her moral values, Janie does mature. This was because the values that she was raised with stuck with her, though perhaps subconsciously. On the other hand, Gatsby, who had little to no interaction with his parents when...

...How Does Fitzgerald Show the Importance of Society in the Opening Chapters of The Great Gatsby? The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel penned by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was an American novelist and short story writer. The tale of The Great Gatsby is set in a modified version of the Long Island and New York City area of the USA, with correlations to The Hamptons. Throughout the opening chapters of the novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses a vast amount of characters, motifs and themes to show the importance of society. These can vary massively but all appear to imply how corrupt society was in the 1920s. He also shows how the innate social standing of people defines and limits them for the rest of their lives. Fitzgerald portrays the 1920s as an era of decayed social and moral values, evidenced in the cynicism, greed, and empty pursuit of pleasure seen within nearly all of the characters. Capital is one of the main focuses of the novel, and it becomes apparent that throughout the tale, it defines not only their social standing, but the level of respect which they receive along with how they are interpreted by others in the novel. Fitzgerald begins the novel with an introduction from the narrator and one of the main protagonists, Nick Carraway. Carraway fought in the First World War, which we later find out he fought alongside Gatsby, giving them some form of common ground to base a ‘friendship’ upon. The novel initially begins with a poignant message from the father of Carraway; “When...
