Throughout the book, “ Wringer”, one of main plot buildups is to Pidgeon Day. In the protagonist’s, Palmer’s, town they see pigeons as dirty feathered rats. The town holds an annual fair, where they have a week of celebrations, and on the last day they release 5,000 pigeons. Shooters take turns shooting said pigeons, and whoever shoots the most after their turn, wins. But, is this actually inspired by real life events .
Sadly, there are some true accounts of mass pigeon shooting, like in Pennsylvania, which the author might have been inspired by. In an article, by the Huffington post, it states “... in Hegins, Pennsylvania. The organizers trapped thousands of live pigeons from cities and other areas where the birds lived and then trucked them
