Throughout John Irving’s novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany, there are many different forms of predestination. Such as Owen perfecting the basketball shot in specifically under four seconds. The bathroom looking like a coffin or a church. Or every one of the armless figures appearing throughout the novel. Sights of predestination were certainly clear throughout Owen Meany, and there was an abundance of them.

The webster's definition of fate is; “The development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.” Owen Meany had no control of the events that happened to him. Throughout his whole life he was under the assumption that everything will happen for a reason, and if you avoid something one time then it will come back around and happen another time. Or that everything you do is all involved with one main ending. For example John Irving put this quote in, “He had sunk the shot in under four second” (Irving 304). Why this was important some might ask. Well, in the end Irving answers the question for you. Reading, “We’ll just have four seconds… I caught the grenade and it wasn’t as easy to handle as a basketball.” (Irving 539). In A Prayer for Owen Meany, Owen would accuse “Calvin” of bad faith. To begin to answer this question the reader must have some knowledge of what the question is actually asking. Many showing evidence of fate and others showing evidence of faith. A Prayer for Owen Meany might make it seem as though fate and faith do fall together naturally. Because Owen showed belief in both of those throughout the whole book. They pretty much guided Owen throughout his entire journey. John Irving’s goal during the book was to make you believe that fate and faith do fall together, because in the real world. Not many people ever just let fate and faith take control. Not like Owen
