I think that people don’t vote mainly because they don’t like their choices and are apathetic and feel that their votes don’t count and do little to alter public policy. It seems like the majority of people I know don’t like or trust politicians and feel they just tell us what we want to hear and never carry through with their campaign promises and disenchanted with the whole process of voting and politics in general. Assuming that low turnout is a reflection of disenchantment or indifference low turnouts can lead to unequal representation among various parts of the population. I think if the Presidential election was changed to a popular vote more people would be energized and excited about voting. A National Popular Vote for president, which would make every vote in every state equally valuable in every election, would expand presidential campaigns from just ten states to all 50. Older people tend to vote more than youths, so societies where the average age is somewhat higher, such as Europe; have higher turnouts than somewhat younger countries such as the United States. For myself sometimes I am unsure how to vote on certain measures even after struggling to read and try to get through the voter pamphlet that they send out. For me it is very confusing and it seems like there are so many pros and cons with each measure it is hard to decide. Nothing is ever simple with measures and they always seem to have a hidden agenda or raise taxes. It seems to me that if things can’t be accomplished by the government now, increasing taxes just increases bureaucratic waste of our hard earned money.
