Introduction
This descriptive essay will be on the topic of exercise addiction and will discuss both the positive affects and the negatives. When considering these two aspects, it is important to know that the negative aspect is much more than the positive. This essay will also be discussing what actually is exercise addiction and the effects it has on the individual who suffers from it. The essay will then conclude with how an exercise scientist can help the individual suffering from exercise dependence.

What are some of the positives of exercise?
Exercising regularly can create some really positive health benefits to the individual. Positive Health reasons for exercise, according to the American Medical Association (1999, P.394), are benefits …show more content…
A negative addicted exerciser does it for intrinsic rewards, due to physical exercise being a central aspect to their day to day lives. However, someone who is a regular exerciser but not an ‘addict’ performs physical exercise to receive extrinsic rewards and finds exercise important, but is not a central aspect to their lives (Landolfi, E. 2013, p.5).
A negative addicted exerciser is a person who will continue to exercise regardless of physical injury (Anshel, 1971), they will also have a psychological dependence on doing regular exercise which is also known as exercise dependence. So due to this exercise dependence the normal benefits of exercise are lost, this is caused from the factors that are attached with it such as anxiety and stress. Another aspect to exercise dependence is the change in mood behaviour, if their exercise regime is broken and in many cases this can cause extreme anxiety and even depression (Cox, 2007).
These two aspects that are experienced by an exercise addict if a session is missed can be a way of determining if an athlete has exercise dependence because someone who is in the lines of doing it for the extrinsic rewards may feel slightly bad that they missed a session, but unlike the exercise addict which do it for intrinsic rewards, they don't go into depression and feel anxious about when they are going to exercise …show more content…
Withdrawal: Is the effect that the addict experiences when exercise regime is lost such as the loss of sleep, anxiety, stress and depression.
Lack of control: This is their inability to stop physical exercise for a certain time period, which therefore can interfere with social life.
Intention effects: This is when they are unable to stick to the time period of their routine, so they are usually going over the set time they have for exercise.
Time: They spend a lot their time planning their regimes, carrying out the exercise and also recovering from them. This also can interfere with social life.
Reduction in other activities: This is due to some of the previous components of the model. It is when their exercise dependence affects their other day to day life activities, such as socialization and work, this can be to the point where it is just reduced or fully stopped due to their dependence.
Continuance: This as mentioned early is when they continue to exercise through an injury or having a passed
