Exile on Main Street Here in New York, we often see people who are down on their luck. Should we or shouldn’t we “brake for them”? Living in New York is a challenge. The people are unpredictable and so is the city. A lot of days while I am commuting on the MTA I see people who are down on their luck, and so I try to make their day easier. There are people that accidently spill something on themselves, broke something of theirs, got robbed, got fired, lost something and other emotional, mental, or physical actions happen to them. People may ask for something like a cell phone to use, money, food and most people ignore them. What people should realize is they shouldn’t make their day worse if they see there already having a bad day and they should give the commuters some space. In New York and especially while commuting it is very hard to keep to yourself. I have been taught by my parents to not ignore a person who is down on their luck, but to help them so that’s what I do, and that’s what everyone should do. I learned this so I can be an example for people to follow and so I can pass this act of kindness to future generations. “Exile on Main Street” which is a story located in Utah is an example of someone that’s down on his luck. Garrison Keillor is the author that wrote a book. His book became popular and the more his book became popular, the more he gained a higher social status. Since he was rich and high class, he got treated better than someone who was poor. He got more respect and people catered to his needs. Garrison Keillor then went to his friends ski home in Utah. (When he decided to go inside the Jacuzzi). The Jacuzzi’s outside and he accidently got locked out of his friend’s home. He eventually realized after many hours passed that he had to go find help and when he did it wasn’t very pleasant. It was extremely cold and he was almost naked knocking on people’s doors for help except after the fifth try. She wasn’t helpful and only agreed to call his friends house but not invite him in from the cold outside as he was shivering. This showed me that whether you are a famous writer or a garbage man you will get treated the same from someone who doesn’t know you. However when they find out your social status that can either make treatment better or worse. A story that relates to “Exile on Main Street” and that I personally went through was a time when a homeless guy was asking for money. One day after school while I was walking down the street a gentleman who was homeless was asking for money so that he may eat. I witnessed dozens of people pass him and ignore him as he was kindly asking for money so that he may eat. I then went to a restaurant and brought him food. I went to the homeless guy to give him the food and when I did he thanked me. I felt very good at that moment because I knew I had helped a person who needed it as he was dealing with a rough time. Most people say that they don’t give homeless people money because they’re most likely going to use it for drugs or alcohol. This is a bad stereotype because that is assuming that all homeless people are on the street because they took drugs or are alcoholics. I wanted to prove this assumption wrong by purchasing the homeless gentleman accepted it very gratefully. I felt a great deal of responsibility for the gentleman that moment because if I were in that position I would want someone to help me out. This relates to Keillor’s story because people wouldn’t answer the door or refused to help. If Keillor died from freezing to death, who would have taken responsibility for that. I believe people should have a sense of responsibility to help someone else who needs it. I strongly believe that people should start realizing that we live in a very stressful, and hectic environment, which is New York City. Whether you are commuting, or just walking down the street, if you see someone in need of help or you see someone having a bad day you should not ignore it. You should help people and perhaps make their day better than how it began. If you help them you can avoid many problems and can also help people deal with their daily lives easier. I was taught to help people and assist people who are down on their luck so they may have a more enjoyable day. I learned this because I was in Boy Scouts for 10 years. This skill was necessary to improve relations and to make the environment a better, and safer one. Mr. Keillors story is not very common from my experience but the way people ignored him when he needed help is common. I hope that people start changing the way they treat other people after reading the article, “Exile on Main Street”. I learned that someone’s luck can change very quickly and this can happen to anyone of us can. If we end up in that kind of position, wouldn’t you want to be helped? I enjoy making my fellow New Yorkers lives easier and making them feel good rather than just ignore them and let their day get worse. We should help people and stop the habit of ignoring them because they may be in danger and you may not even know it. So we should definitely start helping people, giving breaks to people who are down on their luck because if you were in their position I am sure you would want to be helped but you should start helping as well.

... The Transfiguration of Our Lord Orthodox Church (Issanda Muutmise kogudus in Estonian) is on the main street in the small village of Lümanda, on the western side of Saaremaa. Iron Age burials have been found nearby, but the earliest mentions of Saaremaa come from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The island was home to a fierce group of Eastern Vikings. The German crusade into the Baltics in the twelfth century saw them conquered, but only after hard fighting. The first mention of the village of Lümanda is from 1522 when the manor served as the district headquarters for the prince-bishops of Ösel-Wiek. The church was founded in 1893 (although 1870 has also been quoted), in a typically rustic building. Today it falls under the reign of Bishop Alexander Hopjorski of Pärnu and Saaremaa. According to one local, it has a congregation of five. Surrounding it is a dry-stone wall reminiscent of the type seen in Yorkshire in England. The Apostolic Church of St Olga (Püha Olga kirik) stands at the west of Kuressaare mnt as it heads northwards into the heart of the village of Leisi. The church was constructed in 1873, using limestone in its walls and forming a cross-shaped building, with a large central onion dome and four corner towers. The Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church in Estonia was restored in 1993, after surviving in exile during the years of Soviet occupation. St Catherine's Church (Katariina kirik) is in the centre of the island of Muhu, immediately north of Saaremaa...

Russian Revolution

...Between 1861 and 1917, Russian society had undergone many changes. It is safe to say that every aspect of that society had been some how modified. These changes led up to the Bolshevik revolution in November of 1917. Given the nature of Russian society, was the Bolshevik revolution unavoidable? Among the changes Russian society had undergone, one starts off the whole chain of events. This was the emancipation of the serfs, in 1861, by Czar Alexander. The emancipation freed 44 million peasants. The Czar knew that the only way to end the discontent of the serfs and to show that Russia too was a modern society would be to let them free. The Edict of Emancipation caused many problems these uneducated peasants. The land now assigned to them was smaller then the plots they were using as serfs. This was an average of 8 acres. There was also a forty-nine year period over which installments could be paid before the peasants were given full ownership of the land. In fact many peasants were still working for their landlords after the edict. Because of his efforts Alexander was nicknamed "the liberator". Despite giving the serfs their freedom, Alexander's actions cause more problems then they solved. After the unification of Germany between 1861 and 1891, which accelerated it's military and political power, Russia too felt it should industrialize. A man named Sergei Witte, who was Minister of Finance from 1892-1903, almost single-handedly pushed Russia into its industrialization. He...

How Accurate Is It to Say That the Growth of Reformist Groups in the Years from 1881 Was the Main Cause of the 1905 Revolution?

...Growth of Reformist Groups In The Years From 1881 Was The Main Cause Of The 1905 Revolution? I do not think that it is very accurate to say that the activity of reformist groups was the main reason for the 1905 revolution since there were only two parties really mentioned, and they were mostly threats with no action. More prominent causes were social economic and political preconditions, the Russo-Japanese war and Bloody Sunday. The most important cause of the 1905 revolution were the preconditions, especially social and economic ones. The vast majority of the Russian population were peasants living in extreme poverty, especially industry and agriculture workers, even though the economy was thriving, apart from the agricultural side of it. The Russian population was growing rapidly and there was no space for them all too live and cities like Moscow and St Petersburg were full of slums. There was not enough food to harvest, leading to famines in 1892, 1898 and 1901. Conditions like this led to the trigger conditions that set off revolutionary activities like Bloody Sunday, and other strikes and protests. The second most important cause of the 1905 revolution was Bloody Sunday which happened on the 9th January 1905, according to the Russian calendar. It had started off as a peaceful demonstration led by a priest named Father Gapon. Suddenly the Russian army units opened fire on an unarmed group of protesters marching on St Petersburg’s Winter Palace to present the Tsar with a petition...

Song And Dance Festivals

...festivals go way back as over the years and centuries a large amount of Latvian folk songs were written, composed and saved. These songs just asked to be sung. The very first time in Riga that a number of choirs came together to sing against one another was in a city park called Vermanes Darzs or Vermanes Garden in 1836. Afterwards a much larger event took place in Tallinn, Estonia in the summer of 1857. In Riga the first Baltic German Choir Song Festival took place from June 29th to July 4th, 1861. During this song festival 21 choirs participated – from the Latvian cities of Liepaja, Cesis, Limbazi, Jelgava and Kuldiga, from Tallin, Pernava, Tartu, Narva and from St. Petersburg and Moscow. All together over 600 participants. The performances were in several places. In the Dom Cathedral, in the Riga Railway Station’s main hall, and in Dziesmu Svetku Parks or Song Festival Park. Beginning with 1864 smaller events took place in various cities in Latvia where choirs would come together to perform with a little over 100 participants. This was basically during the summers. In 1886 the Riga Latvian Association was established and they set about to organize the very first song and dance festival in Riga as it is still being celebrated to this very day. Janis Betins from the Kurzeme region and Indrikis Zile from the Vidzeme region were chosen as the chief conductor’s with 17 conductors beneath them. Then began the preparation of the song festival program. In those days there were not too...

...of this? Something that happens every day and most of us don’t have a clue that it’s going on. Vladimir Nabokov greatly explained situations like these in his novel, Lolita. Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1899. He spent most of his childhood reading in French, English and Russian. After they Bolshevik revolution, his family went into exile while he attended Cambridge university. After many years spent in Berlin and Paris, he wrote many novels, poems, and short stories in Russian. In 1940, he moved to the United States with his wife and son where he taught Russian. He wrote Lolita in 1955 and shortly after, moved to Switzerland and died in 1977. Many people would say he has something wrong with his head after reading Lolita, but in my opinion he is just stating the truth that most people are too careless to see. Lolita is a novel about an older man named Humbert who has an obsession with the innocence of little girls. He seduces “nymphs” which are young girls between the ages of 14 and 17 who have sexual appeal. When he meets a 12 year old girl named Lolita, he falls in love and does anything and everything to be with her. It is the most disturbing book I have ever read but it shows exactly what goes through a man’s head when he sees little girls. One of the main themes in Lolita is innocence. Nabokov shows this because Humbert takes away the innocence of the little girls. “She groped for words. I supplied them mentally “he...

A Brief History of Napoleon

...Background: Napoleon Bonaparte was the fourth born among his eight siblings, born from a noble family. His father was Carlo Bonaparte, who was a gentleman of Ajaccio, Corsica, whose family of Tuscan origin had settled there and later on married him to Laetitia Ramolino who was a young girl of the island. His father had inherited a lawsuit which focused on the task of recovering an estate which the French church had taken possession of. His mother, Madame Bonaparte, played a significant role in the shaping and upbringing of Napoleon as she was a firm and determined lady who was extremely thorough when it came to matters of order and economy amongst her family. (Markham, 1966) “I was born,” said Napoleon, “when my country was perishing. Thirty thousand Frenchmen were vomited upon our soil. Cries of the wounded, sighs of the oppressed, and tears of despair surrounded my cradle at birth.” During the time of his birth, the Corsicans who were led by the Patriot Paoli led a revolt against the French, who at that time were the masters of the island. Napoleons father was part of the revolt and played a significant role by sharing his fortunes of his chief to the end of the struggle of 1769. They were defeated and they, including Napoleons Family fled to the mountains. As time passed by, the Corsicans submitted and the Bonaparte’s went back to Ajaccio where Napoleon was born. (Markham, 1966) In order for his father to gain support from the French government, he humbled himself...

...The Divine Comedy represents the mature Dante’s solution to the poet’s task annunciated in The New Life. Its three canticles (the Inferno, the Purgatorio, and the Paradiso) display a nearly limitless wealth of references to historical particulars of the late Middle Ages and to Dante’s life. Even so, its allegorical form allows these to function as symbols. The Pilgrim’s journey through Hell to Heaven thus becomes an emblem of all human experience and a recognition of life’s circularity. The “Comedy” of its title is, therefore, the situation of life and the accumulation of experience that attends it. Correspondingly, however, chronological placement of the narrative from Good Friday through Easter Sunday, 1300, particularizes the experience even as it implies the death and rebirth that attends a critical stage of any person’s life. The poet tells his readers in the first line of the Inferno that he is midway through life, and indeed Dante would have been thirty-five years of age in 1300. Though he maintains present tense throughout the poem, he is, however, actually writing in the years that follow the events that he describes. This extraordinary method allows the Poet to place what amounts to prophetic utterance in the mouth of the Pilgrim. Dante thus maintains and further develops the thesis of The New Life, that the progress of the Pilgrim corresponds directly to the progress of the Poet. The literal journey that the Pilgrim undertakes toward the Beatific Vision succeeds only...
