David’s Story sounds like most of the people in the world today. Struggling to make ends meet because they either gave up on school or felt they were not capable of doing further education. I saw it firsthand with my own older brother. Thankfully he ended up pursuing his goal and finishing high school to enter the Marine Corps. He always said that decision was what saved his life from the inevitable chaos that was to bestow on him.
However, my own learning situation started when I first graduated from military training and began technical school. I did not enjoy my job from the beginning because I knew what was waiting for me once I got to my duty station. In all honesty, my job is terrible when you compare it to almost any other job besides a select few. There is a lot of rules and regulations you must memorize and supervision is abysmal. Technical school was a little bit of a struggle when it came time for me to show certain things because I had zero interest and zero motivation to do it. I had problems back at home with my mother’s health deteriorating and someone telling me how much the real job is going to suck once I start. I failed my hands on portion and failed a block test as well but redid both and passed.
There are a couple things I could have done differently like not listen to what anybody has to say and find out on my own for it to be true. Which I eventually did but it would have benefited me in technical school at least. I could have also at least tried to take somewhat of an interest in it in the beginning to try to get a head start for when I actually start doing the job in the Air Force. I had struggles because I had no interest in technical school and showed up to my duty station without a clue.
The whole experience showed me to just make the best of every situation no matter how bad it might be. Even though I hate the job, I am still good at

Fixed Income Portfolio Management

...Fixed-Income Portfolio Selection Kay Giesecke∗ and Jack Kim† Stanford University June 29, 2009; this draft January 11, 2012‡ Abstract The equity portfolio selection problem is the subject of a substantial literature. Though equally important in practice, the selection problem for a fixed-income portfolio of corporate and government bonds, industrial loans and credit derivatives, is less well-understood. The fixed-income portfolio problem presents unique challenges: the risk of issuer default induces skewed return distributions, the correlation of defaults influences the tail of the portfolio return distribution, and credit derivative positions have complex risk/return implications. This paper addresses the static selection problem for a fixed-income portfolio. We optimize the total mark-to-market value of the portfolio at the investment horizon. This value incorporates the intermediate premium and default cash flows of long and short cash and derivative positions, and the survival-contingent market value of these positions at the horizon. The selection problem is cast as a polynomial goal program that involves a two-stage constrained optimization of preference weighted moments of the portfolio mark-to-market. The decision variable is the vector of contract notionals. A capital constraint guarantees the solvency of the investor. The multi-moment formulation addresses the non-Gaussian distribution of the portfolio mark-tomarket. It is also computationally tractable, because we obtain...

Interest Rates

...FOR RISK MANAGEMENT AND VALUATION OF INTEREST-RATE-DEPENDENT CASH FLOWS Andrew Ang* and Michael Sherris† ABSTRACT This paper surveys the main concepts and techniques of recent developments in the modeling of the term structure of interest rates that are used in the risk management and valuation of interest-rate-dependent cash flows. These developments extend the concepts of immunization and matching to a stochastic interest rate environment. Such cash flows include the cash flows on assets such as bonds and mortgage-backed securities as well as those for annuity products, life insurance products with interest-rate-sensitive withdrawals, accrued liabilities for definedbenefit pension funds, and property and casualty liability cash flows. 1. INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper is to discuss recent developments in interest rate term structure modeling and the application of these models to the interest rate risk management and valuation of cash flows that are dependent on future interest rates. Traditional approaches to risk management and valuation are based on the concepts of immunization and matching of cash flows. These ideas were pioneered in the actuarial profession by the British actuary Frank Redington (1952). Interest rates have long been recognized as important to the risk management of insurance liabilities. Recent developments have incorporated a stochastic approach to modeling interest rates. A number of actuaries were early pioneers in this area, including John Pollard...

Gosselink, G. Gayan-Ramirez, M. Decramer. #ERS Journals Ltd 1999. ABSTRACT: Mucociliary clearance (MCC), the process in which airway mucus together with substances trapped within are moved out of the lungs, is an important defence mechanism of the human body. Drugs may alter this process, such that it is necessary to know the effect of the drugs on MCC. Indeed, agents stimulating MCC may be used therapeutically in respiratory medicine, especially in patients suspected of having an impairment of their mucociliary transport system. In contrast, caution should be taken with drugs depressing MCC as an undesired side-effect, independently of their therapeutic indication. Since cough clearance (CC) serves as a back-up system when MCC fails, the influence of drugs must be examined not only on MCC but also on CC. Ultimately, the clinical repercussions of alterations in mucus transport induced by drug administration must be studied. Tertiary ammonium compounds (anticholinergics), aspirin, anaesthetic agents and benzodiazepines have been shown to be capable of depressing the mucociliary transport system...

The accuracy of the financial reporting system depends on answers to a few fundamental questions: At what point has revenue been earned? At what point is the earnings process complete? When have expenses really been incurred? During the 1990s’ boom in the stock prices of dot-com companies, many dot-coms earned most of their revenue from selling advertising space on their websites. To boost reported revenue, some dot-coms began swapping website ad space. Company A would put an ad for its website on company B’s website, and company B would put an ad for its website on company A’s website. No money changed hands, but each company recorded revenue (for the value of the space that it gave the other company on its site). This practice...

Ankola, V. Bhardwaj, D.K. Sahana, M.N.V. Ravi Kumar ⁎ Department of Pharmaceutics, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Phase-X, S.A.S. Nagar, Mohali, Punjab, India - 160062 Received 31 January 2006; accepted 26 April 2006 Available online 13 May 2006 Abstract Antioxidants are emerging as prophylactic and therapeutic agents. These are the agents, which scavenge free radicals otherwise reactive oxygen species and prevent the damage caused by them. Free radicals have been associated with pathogenesis of various disorders like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative disorders and are implicated in aging. Several antioxidants like SOD, CAT, epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate, lycopene, ellagic acid, coenzyme Q10, indole-3-carbinol, genistein, quercetin, vitamin C and vitamin E have been found to be pharmacologically active as prophylactic and therapeutic agents for above mentioned diseases. Antioxidants are part of diet but their bioavailability through dietary supplementation depends on several factors. This major drawback of dietary agents may be due to one or many of the several factors like poor solubility, inefficient permeability, instability due to storage of food, first pass effect and GI degradation. Cooke and Sara L. Mann This paper examines whether flexible work schedules in Canada are created by employers for business reasons or to assist their workers achieve work-life balance. We focus on long workweek, flextime, compressed workweek, variable workweek length and/or variable workweek schedule. Statistics Canada’s 2003 Workplace and Employee Survey data linking employee microdata to workplace (i.e., employer) microdata are used in the analysis. Results show that more than half of the workers covered in this data have at least one of the five specified types of flexible work schedules. Employment status, unionized work, occupation, and sector are factors consistently associated with flexible work schedules. Personal characteristics such as marital status, dependent children, and childcare use are not significantly associated with flexible work schedules, and females are less likely to have a flexible work schedule than are males. Overall, results suggest that flexible work schedules are created for business reasons rather than individual worker interests.
