IIMA FDP Alumni Conference - Ethics & CSR 20-21 December 2013 It was a tremendous experience as well as a proud feeling to be a part of IIM-A FDP Alumni Conference, like “A sea meeting to a river” The fog was being cleared by many highly learned and extremely experience personalities during these two days with their innovative approach which I felt glad to be present with them. Especially the words spoken by Padmashree K. Ramkrishna Rao sir were very touching. The way he tried to explain the complex topics, briefly with a common way that was really phenomenal. I learned about human values and their basic responsibility towards society with the help of gandian studies or believe we can say. I think that human values plays a significant role in ethics. The informative words shared by prof. G.Subramanyam sir on how the ethics and social responsibility simultaneously determine the organization image as well as affects the industry .which was really a learning experience especially what things are happen around us we must be aware of that like how “SATYAM” has almost destroyed its image because of unethical practices done by them which even badly affected the software industry.  Challenges in managing non-profit and social enterprises: Chair: primal sir and The panel was shared by ravi sir and rani man. Really it’s a challenging job to run a non-profit or a social enterprise. What I felt out of discussion is that running a social enterprise is even difficulty job compared to NGOs, because one of the major reason is people prospect toward these organizations and political interference. The discussion was very healthy and practical because it has covered all related issues.  Learning’s:  The present youth should lead from front to bring a change in society.  Negative forces will be affecting, but positively we have to lead.  Glorifying social responsibility: who are agents and why they do it? on the above topic a paper was presented by Vanay Changati, basically according to his research what he tried to share is why organizations are in a hurry to win awards and who are the agents awarding those companies and why?

He came with a conclusion that companies invest huge sum to get registered for winning awards and he wanted to know can’t be a company social responsible without winning awards.  Learning’s  As we know that the current generation deals with number only. It’s been a practice that we judge, rate; adopt a company on basis of the number of awards they won.  There may me companies equally social responsible even more without wining award but the “water is above nose level”. Who is going to understand the fact? That’s reason awards become universal accepted eligibility criteria.  At the same wining an award also it’s not a cup of tea.  CSR and social entrepreneur : issues, discussion and challenges This was presented by KIIT Delegates, basically they tried to draw a comparison among top business house at home and at worldwide its been a nice experience to gather information on such topics.  Learning’s  As we to know that an action can be illegal but morally right. And an action that is legal can be morally wrong. There is every possibility that the entrepreneur will face above dilemma they have to prioritize.

 Why do information system fail  ‘Too much greed and over innovative ideas to earn super profit tend to “IS” failure”  Lack of basic knowledge  People lack in proper communication  Inefficiency in decision making  Gap between top management and bottom management The reasons have to considered to avoid IS failure as stated by prof. V.Venkat Rao

 Hybrid business modal and social business models Actually this presentation was presented by prof. Anand Jaiswal though it’s a ongoing research work he covered to the fullest extent. As we know that business Is for business we do business. So what he tried to explain is there should be model where the entrepreneurs can focus simultaneously on profit

and to meet society needs. He tried to compare apollo with sankar netralaya on different parameters. He explained about Yusuf idea with a rectangular diagram Learning’s
 Now this high to adopt hybrid modals because it will have good impact on business environment too.  its not about the end results but we should focus on means.  Human values plays a vital role to adopt hybrid modal  CSR : mandatory or voluntary  CSR is a business process rather it’s a duty.  Can producing negative product and CSR go hand in hand?  There were many issues suggested by panel members to be discussed at government level.  Every business has to give back what they take from mother earth.  Business is within society , should be remembered  Regarding CSR mandatory rule there are some changes expected and it should be voluntarily done by corporate Genuinely it was heartfelt discussion by leben Johnson and delegate from Mr. SAMMER pepsi and from CSR field prof. Zakir Mulla  The role of diversities in ethics and social responsibility Diversities too plays a vital role in ethics in human being and in business

 The most liked presentation was about “rewarding and ethics” Though uma mam finished her presentation concisely but it was like effective documentary films Mam the reason why I liked is as you sated in your presentation that psychology has proven that rewards Motivates the best but there should be a limit.

“I believe people those who convert their words into action”
“Mam we had a discussion after conference you told that the students those who are present during 2nd session, I m going to give 1 mark for sure” mam your words motivated me ,and your way of rewarding for sincerity touched my heart. Mam as shared examples like HCL rewarded with

15Mercedes. And few companies give 95% of salaries

of total salaries to top management employees and rest to lower level. Like wise you have told I will give one mark more than other student but you did not say like that you rewarded us only without discrimination.

Thank you very much mam for organizing such a conference which made all to think that what GITAM can’t do? M V V N MURTY 1225113225 MBA “B” (2013-15)

College Experience

...College: a Nightmare A true education is an unnerving experience. Or at least it was for me. I still remember how enthusiastic I felt the day I started college to become a teacher of English. I was convinced I was going to succeed at college because I had the determination and willingness to do so. Everybody kept saying college years are "the best years of your life." But nobody said that college can turn out to be a nightmare and that failure becomes your worst enemy. The first year at the teaching training college I was like the sun in its full splendour. But as time went by grey clouds began to shut out the sun. Initially, I had a positive attitude towards college and I was full of excitement and anxiety. I had just finished High School in the United States and  I was highly confident in myself. For years I have worked hard to be an outstanding student and have not experienced failure many times. To my horror, the years that followed were a constant struggle, full of ups and downs. More downs than ups, I must confess. At college I met my worst enemy: failure. I got easily discouraged by it. I even questioned if this profession was really what I wanted for the rest of my life. I also discovered that my confidence had dicreased tremendously to the point that I avoided participating in class discussions because I believed my words had no value at all. It seemed as if everything I did was wrong. Even if I had spent hours and hours working on a paper or a project the...

Experiences as a Writer

...My Experiences as a Writer Thus, I wrote about my life, the summer vacations or silly, imaginary things. I felt intimidated by the prospect of having to fill a page as much as by the endlessness of those first minutes I needed to find a start over than, “Once upon a time.” I like to write. My first experience as a writer started in elementary, around age 12 when I wrote a story. Every now and then, during English class, we were told to write. As I recall, the assignment mostly was to “write about anything” which was very exciting. My Aunt Carol helped me plans ideas for my story. Then, we sat to write down what we had processed. My story was coming together very well. My story was a great, it was about a haunted house out in the country. This is where my writing took off. When I received my paper back from the teacher, she gave me an A on my story. Everyone in my family was so happy for me. My experience as a writer has been extensive. Currently, one writes extensively for school purposes, personal, and as a hobby. For example, I write for my online English and Math classes, whether its discussion threads, questions or essays. One of my experiences that has been bothering me inside since I was a child, it was the sex abuse I encountered as a child. Like many of us, if sex abuse has not happened to you, sex abuse is an ugly thing for a child to go through. Kids at school found out, and started making fun of me. That to me was the...

Experiences as a Writer

...Experiences as a writer My experience as a writer is very limted. As a mechanic and seeing that this is my first time attending college I do not have much experience. The only time have to dedicate to writing is when I’m off from work. I am usually writing about my feelings for my loved ones in a journal. When at work I am required to write reports on the equipment and the functions of the machines. At school I am allowed to expand my knowledge for writing. My feelings towards writing are mixed. On one hand I enjoy writing but, because of my lack of knowledge and my busy schedule I do not have time to fully dedicated myself to it. To me in order to write u have to have a feeling towards it, and truly understand what you are doing. I believe that you cannot simply jump into writing it has to be learned over time and practice in order to become a good writer. My experience from writing comes from my journal entries that I try to write in every day. I believe that is going to help me become more adjusted to writing in a class room. My bad experiences with writing come from when I was in high school. I was not a very good writer and it showed in my grades. I do believe it’s because of I lacked the passion to write. So that taught me that whenever I pick a topic to write about it has to be sometime that I could relate to as closely as...

Memories and Experience

...Each memory, experience and event that occurs in a person’s life is essential to help discover the person they have grown to become. Our childhood, in particular, is important to reflect on because that is when we experienced things for the first time and where we learned from our mistakes (Cottingham 2008). It is through narration that we are able to understand how our childhood and our past has affected us and created who we are as a human being. We must recognize the importance of old memories and how well we are able to explain them. It will be examined how the actual occurrence of an event differs from the way it has been told. With every action we take, there is always a good reason for doing it. According to philosopher Charles Taylor, this is called “an orientation to the good.” He believes that to make sense of our lives and have any identity at all, we must have an orientation to the good (Cottingham 2008). The direction of our lives depends on this good as well as how motivated we are to get to the place relating to this good. What Taylor is trying to say is that without having motivation behind each decision we make, our reason for existence is meaningless. This is an excellent point because it is what makes us all individuals. Although many people may experience the same thing, the way it is interpreted is what makes each person’s identity unique. We are able to create incentives that push us do better in everything we do and make us work hard to achieve...

My Management Experience

...My Management Experiences My management experiences started when I was assigned as the first and only Coal Milling Supervisor. Coal milling then was a very troublesome section, most probably because supervisors in our department are mostly focused in Pyro-processing operation, considered the heart of cement manufacturing. I oversee operations of three units Coal Mill Plants, one unit Coal Flash Dryer and coal conveying systems. I ensure sufficient stock of fine coal in terms of quantity and quality and the continuous availability of all the coal milling equipment. Fine coal is being used as fuel in clinker (semicement) manufacturing. The most recent project in Coal Milling is the state of the art Coal Dozing system worth around P50 M, part of the P2B worth of modification project in the Pyroprocessing department. Coal Mills run 24 hours-7days when the two units Rotary Kiln (Pyro-processing) is in operation. Fine coal consumption is almost break-even with the coal mill capacities. Break down of any equipment in a Coal Mill Plant may result to slow down of Rotary Kiln or reduce in clinker production. Thus, short planning and scheduling of maintenance works at coal mill have to be cautiously implemented and people who will do the job must be motivated to finish the job as soon as possible. If break down of any coal mill took more than eight hours, slowdown of in pyro-processing is inevitable. My Management Experiences During my first year in Coal Milling, I did a...

Experiences Shape Our Path

...Experiences shape our path I would probably say that one of my formative experience is how a colleague and I constructed a narrative of our experiences at SSA that began with we’re the oldest students here, unsure of what classes to take, we could never be full time students, take more than 2 classes and/or work and attend classes—only to have some transformative moment or moments that then made us the social workers we are today. On the flip side, I feel like we all have this platonic ideal in our minds about passing all of our classes with grades higher than a “C,” and we expect, contrary to our own experiences and contrary to the experiences of some of the students in our cohort, is that not to stress ourselves, and do the very best we can. Unlike my colleague, my concern was graduating undergrad 30 years ago, coming to a prestigious discipline, and feeling inferior in my first year of not knowing how to write papers or conduct research. I came from a very small college, and had no preparation whatsoever in 30 years what school was about currently. Moreover, graduate school has given me the opportunity to apply a theoretical foundation to describe my own undergraduate experience—after spending four years going through college and witnessing my own development, I am now learning why I went through such development and how I can best help those develop and grow just as I did. SSA has removed all self-doubt, and helped me leap past my own assumptions of what I knew to be true...

Religious Experience

...RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE A2 Philosophy of Religion What is Religious Experience? • A religious experience is a non-empirical occurrence and may even be perceived as supernatural • It can be described as a “mental” event which is undergone by an individual and of which that person is aware. • Such an experience can be spontaneous or it may be brought about as a result of training and self-discipline. • Recipients of religious experiences usually say what has happened to them has drawn them into a deeper knowledge or awareness of God. • It is very important to remember that the experience itself is not a substitute for the Divine, bit a vehicle that is used to bring people closer to the Divine. • The experience that each individual has is absolutely unique and cannot be shared with anyone. • Finally, genuine religious experiences seem to be encouraging, they do not condemn the individual, but help them to live a better life or, for example, to help others. Arguments from Religious Experience from William James. The most famous commentator on Religious Experience is William James (1842 – 1910) He recognised that the term mystical is used in a wide variety of contexts but suggested that using it to refer to “any person who believes in thought transference and spirit return” is far too ambiguous. His famous work “The Varieties of Religious Experience”, published in 1902 includes his categorisation of the four characteristics which, he claims, will enable us to...

Plato Does Not Value Experience Enough

...“Plato does not value experience enough” Discuss (10) Plato was a philosopher and mathematician born in Greece. If someone does not value something, it suggests they do not believe in its worth, importance or usefulness. To begin with, Plato was not an empiricist; someone who believes that knowledge is derived from the experience of their senses. This was due to the fact that Plato believed in A prior knowledge; knowledge gained before experience. Plato believed that when we were born, our immortal soul already gained some sort of knowledge which we are able to use in this world. Therefore Plato does not value experience enough due to his beliefs. Furthermore, Plato understood that the world in which we live is the World of Appearances, where the objects in this life are just poor copies of their true forms in the Realm of Forms. We are deceived by our senses because they limit us to how much knowledge someone can have. For example, there is only so much that we can see from our eyes, which therefore limits our knowledge. On the other hand, pain can argue against this. If you were to hit your head on something quite hard, you will feel pain and come to understand this the world we live in is real and not an “appearance”, and the experience we get here is the only experience that exists. This illustrates that Plato did not value experience enough because he thought that our senses deceived us. Similarly, Plato argued that everything in this world, the World of Appearances...

First Marketing Research Field Experience

...that time. We weren’t able to see compradors since all three of them take their products themselves from the suppliers. Most of them get their products from Dalaguete. We conducted an interview with each of the retailers. After Alcoy, we headed to Mantalongon, Dalaguete market. There were only 2 stalls of meat products there. One stall gets their supply from Alegria. People there were so nice and accommodating. They were so kind in answering our questions. Next stop was Dalaguete market. There were 8 retailers of meat and poultry but only one gets the products from Alegria. After the interview, we had lunch and head our way home. It was such a great experience for me since it was my first time to conduct a real and serious research. It wasn’t only learning but also experiencing and having fun. We heard real life stories and experiences from our interviewees. We were so amazed how they answered all our questions with smiles. It was also a great honor for me to work with Ms. Ivy Jumao-as, our kind and smart instructor, and Dr. Larry Silapan from BA Department who was also kind and generous to us. Are Books More Important Than Experience?

...almost all the books are the children of the marriage of the author’s thought with the real world. In order to express themselves, they surely use a very systematic structure to form a book, which have a specific note of their thought and experiences. With the systematic structure, we can learn things gradually, by our own pace and we need not to worry that if we had miss some of the important details because systematic structure never drop the essential points. What we only need to do is follow the instructions directed by the author and grasps the content by our consideration. There is another reason that deserve some words here, however, is that learning by reading books is an efficient way of accumulating knowledge. In ancient world, no books existed, and people should realize the world by exploring everything by themselves. This method apparently takes too much time and energy. But with the ready-made knowledge provided by the books put in front of us, why not take on it directly? It will save us a lot of time to take advantages of others’ thought and experiences than we explore them by ourselves. It would not be too kindly disposed to the idea that not learning knowledge in books is not important. Of course, gaining knowledge from experience is not without advantages. Because experiencing the life by...

Religious Experience

...Is Religious experience a valid and trustworthy argument for the existence of God? Introduction In this essay I shall be making a case for why I believe Religious experience to be a valid and trustworthy argument for the existence of God, I will be focusing primarily on the Christian faith and some of it’s faithful adherents. I shall address some counter arguments, and conclude with what I believe counts for a valid religious experience, so as to decipher, to an extent, subjective human experience in contrast to what adherents to their faith would believe is a universal, absolute truth. Religious Experience The argument for ‘religious experience’ being a valid and trustworthy argument for the existence of God is often termed ‘the argument from perception’ as the one experiencing perceives that the experience itself is birthed by something or someone independent of the recipient . The logic behind the ‘argument from perception is that since there are so many people who at various times in history have claimed to have Theistic perceptions, there simply must be something to them’( Gellman,17,2001). Concerning the area of ‘Religious experience’ It is interesting to note that in an article for ‘The Guardian’ by columnist Mark Vernon, he cites renowned Harvard University psychologist and philosopher William James as stating that the ‘strongest evidence for the existence of God was found in personal, inner religious experience’ ( Vernon, 2010). After extensive...

Customer Experience and Customer Engagement

...Customer experience and customer engagement Customer experience is replacing quality as the most important element in marketing. (Klaus & Maklan, 2013) Great customer experience will encourage customer engagement, which can be understood as a customer’s cognitive, emotional and behavioral interaction with a brand (Hollebeek, 2011). The high customer engagement is directly related to high customer satisfaction, strong customer loyalty and increased word-of-mouth behavior, which all in turn maintain companies’ sustainable competitive advantage and allow they charging higher prices and profit margins than competitors. As said Investment Weekly News (2012) quoted that consumers will pay for the extraordinary customer experience. This reflection focuses on making outstanding customer experience and its relation to customer engagement. In the electronics industry, retailers purposely determine and deliver extraordinary customer experiences that are profitable and hard to duplicate, prospering despite economic downturns and competitive threats. Apple is a master in making great customer experience. As Miller (2012) stated, the superior customer service that Apple deliver has enable the company to grow rapidly while commanding higher prices than its competitors and earning the best profit margins in the consumer-electronics industry. Liyakasa (2012) also pointed out that Apple is in the top of customer brand loyalty ranking. The key strategies that Apple sustains its high strong...
