Rather than using telephone and mail, people now more prefer to use the latest channel, Facebook, for maintaining their social network. Facebook is an information technology that provides a platform for users to create personal profile with their own photos, interests, contacts and others information and build a personal network that connects them to other users. Users can easily interact with others in their friend list by posting pictures and leaving message on their friend’s wall. However, what the user-friendly Facebook functions can disturb users in a certain way. This essay will examine how a useful social networking tool becomes useless.
Facebook acts like a virtual community that has grown dramatically in popularity in the past few years. Over 800millions active users are using Facebook all over the world. Many companies make use of the considerable amount of users, they start marketing strategies via Facebook. Dislike the individual profiles and Facebook Groups, companies starts Facebook Pages, which allow businesses to gather “fans” the way celebrities, musicians and sports team do. Companies invite friends and family to become fans of their pages in order to collect a respectable crowd of users to visit their pages (Pattison, 2009). Companies update and newsfeed to inform fans about the latest events, contests, specials or anything of interest for promotion. Once a user clicks the “like” or “share” button in the page, the abstract of the page will be shown on the wall of the user. Hence, the friends of the user can easily recognize the company through the wall. This promotion strategy is highly effective due to the “clicking” function. There are now 1.4million Facebook Pages and Facebook gathers over 10 million fans every day (Facebook, 2011).
