Facing Adversity At It’s Best
Let’s say you are a surfer and about to be the best in town. What do you think will happen when a shark comes up and bites your arm right off? What would you do if as a young child you lost your legs and get looked at weirdly? Everyone who has their limbs should be thankful and less lazy. We all make excuses but Bethany Hamilton and Aimee Mulins don’t.
Even though Bethany Hamilton and Aimee Mulins overcame adversity in different ways, it is important to see that they both accepted who they were in life. In both, the film and story both Aimee Mulins and Bethany Hamilton accept who they are in life. For example, Aimee Mulins took her disability to the next level. She didn’t want to be the weird girl with no legs. She wanted to be the fastest woman in the world with cheetah like legs! Who needs real legs when you can be the fastest one of all. She was opened up to much more opportunity. Similarly, Bethany lost her arm from a shark attack and was bitten above the elbow. Without the elbow joint, you can't move your arm. That's why her fake arm would only be for cosmetics. She did not wear the arm, instead she used a special board made just for her. It was built with a handle making it easier for her to …show more content…
Aimee worked with many people to make her legs to make her the fastest woman in the world. She asked for her legs to work like a cheetah’s. She doesn't care what people think if her weird legs, she only cares about her doing what she wants. On the other and Bethany started to give up. She thought who would want a one armed person the represent them. She started to go through a depressed stage. Since she didn’t want to surf she traveled to Thailand. Over at Thailand, she learned that it is possible to be positive in the worst case possible. To conclude difference is what makes us unique so we have to find a way to be different and

...Apollo 13 - Film Review Relation to Effective Teams Team Wind Working in Groups and Teams LOS 3150 RJ Graham May 8, 2009 When facing issues, conflicts, and the attainment of goals having the resources of a fully functional and focused team are irreplaceable. A team that has clear goals and strategies in place is more likely to succeed even when faced with the greatest types of adversity. In the movie, Apollo 13, the cast of characters is faced with achieving a goal under severe pressure and numerous problems, that if not successfully attained will cost people their lives. [1] The organization had a common goal that was securely set in the minds of each team member and each member was well aware of what failure could ultimately cost the entire organization. Even under this tremendous pressure filled climate, the team was able to use different types of decision making techniques in order to be effective in solving the issue facing them. While the movie was of course dramatized to reach audiences, it was based on a true story. This gives the emotions, personal interaction and problem solving techniques projected by the film a strong basis as to how teams should aspire to function in today’s environment. The background of the team ultimately began with the competition between the U.S. and Russia and their space exploration programs. The Apollo 13 mission was at this point a routine trip to the moon. U.S. astronauts had completed a mission to the moon one...

...offerings—is vital to corporate performance. Execution-as-efficiency is important. But focusing too narrowly on it can prevent your company from adapting effectively to change. Consider General Motors: Managers’ confidence in GM’s famously efficient control systems blinded them to big shifts in the market, including customers’ preferences for fuel-efficient cars. GM posted a $38.7 billion loss in 2007. Edmondson recommends widening your lens to include execution-as-learning. Companies that use this approach focus not just on carrying out key processes more efficiently than rivals—but also on learning faster. To foster execution-as-learning, make it safe for employees to ask questions and fail. Then: • Provide process guidelines, using the best available knowledge. ...MANAGEMENT 12E KREITNER & CASSIDY INTERACTIVE ANNOTATIONS Annotation 1a It’s a Small World Question: How does this situation illustrate the pros and cons of economic globalization? Economic globalization provides manufacturers with access to parts from the around the world. With increased specialization comes increased efficiency and lower prices. However, this also leads to a higher level of dependence on a complex supply chain. When Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in April 2010 air traffic across Europe came to a standstill. This brought the supply chain to a halt as parts and supplies transported by plane were left sitting on the runway. The economic impact included costly manufacturing plant shutdowns and sales delays. Annotation 1b Back to the Opening Case Question: What evidence of the managerial functions and skills can you detect in the Zappos.com case? Reference figures 1.3 and 1.4. Of the eight functions of management there is clear evidence of Communicating as employees are invited to provide suggestions and feedback related to the core values. Staffing is also involved as they incorporate their core values into the hiring process, particularly the desire to hire people who are humble. Although less obvious, Leading and Motivating are present as well. Employees involved in defining the company’s core values are quite likely to find their work more satisfying and rewarding. Leadership is evident as there is a clear vision and...

It should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in engaging a company with big ideas who understands that leaders live and die by the quality of what they say.” —Richard Stone, story analytics master, i.d.e.a.s “A primary role of leaders is to create and maintain meaning for their organizations.
