Facing the Mountains
The purpose of this essay is to identify and discuss my personals strengths and weakness, I have discovered in myself and how they revealed themselves on the trip and how I can transfer the use of this personal strength in an outdoor survival setting, into a strength, which will help me in an academic setting. Also, to discuss what I can learn from my weakness in an outdoor survival setting, and identify ways to prevent this weakness from interfering with my academic success the use of this personal strength in an outdoor survival setting, into a strength, which will help me in an academic setting. To add more, to describe my vision of the meaning of success, at the college level. During this trip at Mont-Tremblant on the 18-20th of September , I have developed 1 main strength and weakness about myself and I experienced it even more on this trip. During this SOS challenge the strength that I discovered about myself is my ability to help others and my weakness is that I have a difficult time adapting myself to change.

First, the strength that I developed in this course and trip was my ability to help others that are in trouble. This strength revealed itself effectively during the course and trip, my ability to help those in trouble brought a sense to myself to push myself even harder. Also by discovering that I am able to help others creates a positive and friendlier environment for me. The more I was helping my classmates when they were in trouble, the more I was able to have an impact on them. I believe by helping others, I was able to have a better connection and able to understand them better. For example, while I was hiking on Saturday, because it was a tiring and long trail my classmates and I were very tired. Even tough I was tired and impatient I kept on hiking, in the middle of the hike my friend fell down hard on the rocks. When I saw that she fell down hard on the rocks all covered in mud I helped her back up and was comforting her by asking if she was okay and telling her that she is very courageous and that everything will be fine. The other example is that, on the Sunday trail it was also a even harder trail even though it was a shorter hike than on the Saturday trail it was harder because it was steeper. When I was hiking because I wanted to finish early I was walking fast .As a result, my friend asked me to slow down for her and sometimes to take a break. Seeing her discouraged, I told her not to give up because she is a fighter, that by facing this challenge she is becoming adventurous. Furthermore, I can help transfer this strength to a general academic setting by helping my classmates with their assignments if the teacher`s explanations are not easy to understand. This strength will enhance my general academic and improve my chances of “school survival.” For example, my willingness and ability to help others will motivate myself to concentrate harder in class whenever the teacher is lecturing it will push me to take well organized notes, do my assignments it will help me become a efficient student. Also, it will improve my chances of “ school survival” because it will create a positive impact around me and I will be able to have enjoyable connections.

Second, the weakness that I developed in this course and trip was that I do not like trying new experiences. This weakness revealed itself mostly during the trip; my inability to be trying new things hindered my esteem. In addition, by realizing that I had a hard time to adapt myself to try new challenging experiences it brought a sense of discouragement to myself. The more I was putting my mind that I do not like to try new experiences, the more hiking on the trails was difficult for me. For example, since I am extremely afraid of heights and heard that I was going to hike for very long hours, I already knew that this challenge was not for me. For example, during the Saturday trail every time I was climbing I felt that I was loosing my breath for that reason, I was stopping and taking breaks for at least 5-10 minutes. Also, because I wanted to give up and thought to myself that I would not continue to keep on trying I was always one of the last one people to come in the group and I was delaying the entire group. Moreover, my inability to try new experiences could interfere with my general academic success and I could fail if I do not want to learn and try the new assignments and methods of the teacher. I can prevent this weakness from interfering with my academic success and causing “school failure” for example by working and focusing on the new projects like new group projects group that will be presented to me. Also, I can search for resources by asking people who know about the topic it can help have a better appreciation on the topic and every time I try something new I can reward myself.

In conclusion, I have a developed and gain a better knowledge on my main weakness and strengths and how I can transfer them to my academic setting. Another strength that is having is that I am procedural person and the weakness that I am sensitive to criticism. Moreover, what I learned from this SOS experience is what is hyperthermia and how to prevent hyperthermia in an SOS trip, how to deal with outdooring challenges, how to survive in the nature, how to work learn from my teammates. To add more, I should stop making excuses about why I shouldn’t take risks because if I continue to make excuses and being afraid it is going to paralyse my way of success. Also, I learned that I never knew how courageous I was until I was actually determined to overcome this arduous trip. This experience has shaped me by allowing me to experience my own strengths and how I can impact others with it, also by experiencing my weakness and how I can prevent it from interfering with my academic setting. It has shaped me to step out of my comfort zone and to have a positive mind towards new challenges and be willing to try them because that is how I will succeed and become courageous. This experience will shape my future by me willing to be comfortable and being open to change in my class studies.
