CHAPTER I: THE BENEFITS AND PROBLEMS OF USING INTERNET IN THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE SECOND YEAR EDUCATION STUDENT IN USANT

I. INTRODUCTION

Internet plays a fundamental role in organizations and society. The basic fact justifies the information revolution that has been taking place across the globe in recent times. The term Internet according to Cawkell in Ogedebe is a large computer network formed out of some thousands of interconnected networks, and it supports a whole range of services such as electronic, file transfer protocol, database access and many others. It is therefore not surprising the success story behind the advent of Internet. That is why today, the internet linked thousands of nations and enterprises across the world. Hence, the world which appears physically large has been made to be too small by internet and reference to it as “global village”.

Nowadays, using internet becomes a basic need for people from all around the world, including college students. You can search online from your gadgets, because accessing internet with people, you no longer have to use computer or laptop. Thus, for college students, you need to maximize the usage of your gadgets and internet to do these things: Do communication;College students need to communicate especially with their lecturers and sometimes it can’t be done face to face. You might need to get clearer information about the task, consult about your thesis proposal, discuss about your thesis project with your advisor/lecturer. You can have a group discussion with classmates about certain materials. Get more information; Lecturers usually give a little explanation about the material. To get more information and deeper understanding about the subject, students need to look for other sources like books and journals. However, finding books and journals in library might be tiring and sometimes the result isn’t satisfying. As the alternative, finding the tutorials and exercises through search engines is faster and more complete. Join online course; some college students feel that studying at college is not enough. They feel it’s necessary to join course that can enlarge their knowledge about the major they take. In this case, college students love joining online course to ease their learning process in which they don’t need to spend many time to go to certain place. Besides, they can also join course given by providers from different city or country. Ask help from online services; College students usually experience assignment that they aren’t able to do. Besides, they sometimes experience tiredness to do difficult assignment. In this case, asking help from online services is a good way. You can choose some services that match with your need. You can buy research paper online if you find difficulties in writing paper and essay. These are some problems of using internet. More disturbing is that the Internet has provided an opportunity for some to stalk and harass other online users. Other risks of Internet use include the exchange of pornography, online gambling, credit card debt as a result excessive amounts of time spent online. With these factors in mind, one might conclude that college students could be more susceptible to overusing or becoming dependent on the Internet.

This research is made so that that the students will know if what are the benefits and problems of using internet and how it will affect their academic performance. Also the students will know what should be the best way in order to prevent those problems that they may encounter.

The selected studies and literature are foreign were foreign were found relevant to the totality of the present study. These were drawn from the reading of the researcher from different libraries and websites. From obvious reasons, it should be noted that the impact of internet access on on-campus instruction is still very low for various reasons. The technology is new, very costly and perhaps too threatening to existing academic structures and traditions. This view was supported by BrownandDiguid (1996). The influence of internet on academic performance of students differs depending on population. Some studies reported no significance effect; however, other studies effect of internet access of students with a post test results according to Ehrman (1995). In contributing to the academic performance of students, Wagner (1998) saw internet as a forum that promote group discussion which is time and distance independent. The word wide web service provide by internet with over 5 million websites allow students from all disciplines to source for relevant information. Busari (2001) sees that internet as a medium through which lecturers and students can meet without seeing each other. Students can also learn through teleconferencing where by the use of small video camera and microphone members of the group actually see and hear each other. Sanni et al (2009) in a recent study observed that there is a gender difference in internet use and thus adequate attention should be paid ensuring equal access between male and female students.

Factors That Affects the Study Habits of Students

...History[edit] Students taking a scholarship examination inside a classroom in 1940 Ancient China was the first country in the world that implemented a nationwide standardized test, which was called the imperial examination. The main purpose of this examination was to select for able candidates for specific governmental positions.[4] The imperial examination was established by the Sui Dynasty in 605 AD and was later abolished by the Qing Dynasty 1300 years later in 1905. England had adopted this examination system in 1806 to select specific candidates for positions in Her Majesty's Civil Service, modeled on the Chinese imperial examination. This examination system was later applied to education and it started to influence other parts of the world as it became a prominent standard (e.g. regulations to prevent the markers from knowing the identity of candidates), of delivering standardized tests. Influence of World Wars on Testing Both World War I and World War II made many people realize the necessity of standardized testing and the benefits associated with these tests. One main reason people saw the benefits was from the Army Alpha and Army Beta tests, which were used during WWI to determine human abilities. Alongside the Army Alpha, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale "added momentum to the testing movement."[5] Soon after, colleges and industry began using tests to help in accepting and hiring people based on performance of the test. Another reason more tests...

...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...

...the USA: Regulations Keeping Jobs Overseas?” The reason behind this article was trying to bring as many jobs back to America as possible. Why would companies come back to America one it would cost them more money, second it will take longer to develop millions of products. Companies outsource to other countries because one their parts and labor is cheap and second they will get it done faster than the average Americans. These countries that we send them too China, Indonesia, Vietnam and etc.… are considered slavery country or in other terms third world countries. The reason labor is cheap over there is because of inflation and how other countries use their currency by keep producing more money which decrease their values. According, to studies third world countries that are lower class are less likely to be successful in their lives or the children lives. Like people say the richer get richer and the poor stay poor. Over the last four years the United States have brought back 100,000 jobs which is a huge deal in this country because that leave 100,000 less people to be unemployed. Also, one of our biggest manufacturing countries in the world “China” has been increasing their price every year. The have increased it about 18% each year...

Study Habits

...except the problem regarding the attitudes of the students toward their academic performance. There is a usual observation and protest of the secondary school teachers regarding the products of the elementary level of education or the foundation of their learning. They said that the pupils do not know how to study on their own initiative. Some cannot work out their assignments; others cannot take part actively in the class recitation, and others do not know the art of note taking. There have been many instances which showed that majority of the students display inability to discriminate between relevant and irrelevant information they got from their references. Quite a number of students simply pick up the words from the pages of the books or printed materials while comprehending the meaning of it. These and many others are results of poor method of study habits. Thus, developing the youth requires early training in the schools. According to Covey (1989), “To focus on technique is like cramming your way through school. You sometimes get by, perhaps even get good grades, but if you don’t pay the price day in and day out, you’ll never achieve true mastery of the subjects you study or develop an educated mind.” It is said that aside from...

Study Habits and Skills

...many ways. There are lots of factors that affect learning. Some of these can boast learning and some can hinders learning. Many educational psychologist mentioned different factors that affects learning. It can be intrinsic, extrinsic or environmental. Some says learning can be acquired through experience (Ivan Pavlov). Some believes that by giving reinforcement (positive or negative), a student will eagerly learn ( B.F Skinner). But no single factor can definitely pointed out as predicting learning. It has been interplay with so many factors like gender, economic status, age, social status, IQ, study habits, etc. But among all of these factors, one with big impact to their learning is the study habits and skills of an individual. Such study habits and skills can be related to; a. habits that provides good working condition, b. essential study habits, reading habits and skills and c. habits related to note taking outlining and library use. The Social Cognitive Theory focuses on learning affected by behavior. People learn by observing others, with the environment, behavior, and cognition all as the chief factors in influencing development in a reciprocal triadic relationship. For example, each behavior witnessed can change a person's way of thinking (cognition). Similarly, the environment one is raised in may influence later behaviors, just as a father's mindset (also cognition) determines the environment in which his children are raised.Since habit is a behavior, and skills can...

Effective study skills are associated with positive out comes across multiple academic content areas and for diverse learners. The purpose of this article is to describe an information-processing perspective on the contribution of study skills to academic competence, and to identify evidence-based strategies that are effective in helping students to improve their study skills. Study habit, skill, and attitude inventories and constructs were found to rival standardized tests and previous grades as predictors of academic performance, yielding substantial incremental validity in predicting academic performance. We found that study skill inventories and constructs are largely independent of both high school grades and scores on standardized admissions tests but moderately related to various personality constructs; these results are inconsistent with previous theories. Study motivation and study skills exhibit the strongest relationships with both grade point average and grades in individual classes. Academic specific anxiety was found to be an important negative predictor of performance. In addition, significant variation in the validity of specific inventories is shown. Scores on traditional study habit and attitude inventories are the most predictive of performance, whereas scores on inventories based on...
