Discussion: Factors Affecting Auditors’ Assessments of Planning Materiality

...In this paper Blokdijk et al. investigate the Planning Materiality (PM) values used by Dutch auditors performed by Big 5 and non-Big 5 firms between 1998 and 1999. They study whether there is a relationship between Planning Materiality, the client’s size, the client’s control environment, the client’s rate of return on assets and the client’s complexity. They also study whether Planning Materiality values differ between Big 5 and non-Big 5 firms. Given the vagueness of guidance for using certain quantitative thresholds and the importance of the materiality judgment, studying the auditor’s actual materiality judgment in practice can give us a different view on the audit decision making process and audit quality. Only two previous studies utilized archival data to calculate estimates of Planning Materiality. Both studies used data obtained from only one single audit firm, KPMG. In this paper, Blokdijk et al. estimate several PM-models on a data-set of 108 audits of companies of the Netherlands performed by 13 different public accounting firms during either 1998 or 1999. They find a good cross-sectional fit by applying a PM-model using the client’s size, client’s rate of return on assets, strength of control environment and the level of client complexity. First, they found that the ratio PM/Assets, systematically declines when the Assets increase. This is consistent with the findings of Elliot (1983) for KPMG audits. Then they went on to test if the PM and Assets has de facto...

The Importance of Controlling Scope Creep

...Mante, 2009). Project Manager (PM) must maintain a consistent focus on the scope of the project along with all the factors affecting positively or negatively on the performance/growth of the project. Project scope should be controlled throughout the project life cycle. Factor indicating the sneak from the scope should be immediate highlighted and appropriate action to obtain the desired / planned outcomes of the project should be triggered if deviation exceed acceptable limit. Delay in recognition of scope creeping factors would change the outcomes at the completion of the project or even can cause stoppage or cancelling of the project. Furthermore, if project faces unavoidable circumstances that make some amendments in project scope inevitable for the continuity of project, then PM must take stakeholders in confidence and properly communicate the unavoidable forces with their affect on project along with proposed changes in scope of the project (Project Smart, 2013). Project manager is responsible for successful completion of the project according to the plan, with allowed resources and within given time. Project manager must address those factors, which cause scope creep; it generally creates hurdles in fulfilling the project within given constrains, along with significant impact on its outcomes (Haughey, 2009). Project manager can control the factors affecting the scope by; 1. Apply professional skepticism throughout the project to identify scope creep. Clearly include a...

The following is a competitive market analysis on the potential of our new 2016 Chevy Volt’s success. We will be focusing on our competitor Toyota and their Prius lineup. Additionally, we will summarize our target consumer and current market conditions. Then we will cover variables that weigh on supply, demand, and equilibrium prices. Next, we will consider the pros and cons our firm faces while identifying the effect on our competitiveness and long-term profitability. Then, we will evaluate factors that influence fixed and variable costs. Lastly, we will provide recommendations on how GM can grow their profits and increase their competiveness. The Product The Chevy Volt was a concept designed by Bob Lutz Jon Lauckner of General Motors ‘GM’ in 2006 to overcome many of the limitations of pure electric vehicles while retaining many of the beneficial elements. The purpose of this car was to leap-frog the technology of the Prius hybrid.
