Fantastic Voyage

Walter, a 55 year old male has just eaten a hamburger, French fries and a root beer. Our mission is to travel through the gastrointestinal tract as a video reporter and monitor the digestion of Walter’s meal. First we enter through the mouth where food is broken down into smaller molecules by the teeth. The teeth are hard organs found along the anterior and lateral edges of the mouth. Teeth are made up of a bone-like structure called dentin and covered in a enamel layer for hardness. The tongue contains rough papillae, which grips food as it is moved the tongue muscles. The tongue also helps to push food toward the posterior part of the mouth for swallowing. In the mouth there are 3 sets of salivary glands that produce a watery secretion know as saliva. With the assistance of salivary enzymes or saliva the food particles are moistened and are then able for the tongue and other muscles to push the food into the pharynx, which is connected to the posterior end of the mouth. We are now travelling downward through a long muscular tube that extends from the pharynx to the stomach and the food will then enter the esophagus. The pharynx serves two different functions in the digestive system; it has a flap of tissue called the epiglottis that acts as a switch to route food to the esophagus and air to the larynx (enchantedlearning.com, 2001). The food has now entered the esophagus and we are experiencing a series of rhythmic, wave like muscle movements, called peristalsis. This movement forces food from the throat to the stomach. We have entered the stomach which is a large muscular sac located on the left side of the abdominal cavity, just inferior to the diaphragm. The stomach is lined with a mucous membrane which contains glands that secrete gastric juices. The stomach is a storage area for food until the body has had time to digest the food properly. While in the stomach gastric acid is secreted in three phases: cephalic, gastric, and intestinal. The cephalic phase is activated by the smell and taste of food and swallowing. The gastric phase is activated by the chemical effects of food and the distention of the stomach. The intestinal phase blocks the effect of the cephalic and gastric phases. After the stomach receives the bolus, peristalsis begins and the gastric juices and bolus are mixed together to become chyme. Now from the stomach we travel to the duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine. The duodenum continues to breakdown food, while peristalsis continues. The jejunum and ileum are responsible for absorption of nutrients into the blood stream. The superior mesenteric artery supplies the small intestine with blood. The superior mesenteric artery and pancreatic duodenal artery run between layers of mesentery membrane that connects the intestines with the wall of the abdominal cavity. The blood from the intestine is returned by the superior mesenteric vein along with the splenic vein, which forms the portal vein, which drains into the liver. The division of the portal vein creates the hepatic portal, which is two large branches, each going to one of the major lobes of the liver. The hepatic portal vein arises from the gut, enters the substance of the liver behind not only the bile but also the hepatic artery. The superior mesenteric vein receives blood from the small intestines, two-thirds of the large intestine, and the stomach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatic_portal_vein, 2014). The superior mesenteric vein drains the distal third of the large intestine, including the descending colon, the sigmoid colon, and the rectum. The splenic vein is formed from branches from the spleen, pancreas, and portions of the stomach, and the inferior mesenteric vein. The hepatic portal vein delivers materials from these digestive and circulatory organs directly to the liver for processing. The processed blood that came from the hepatic artery exits the liver via the right, left, and middle hepatic veins, and flows into the inferior vena cava (CNX Anatomy and Physiology, 2013). The inferior vena cava receives blood from the liver via a series of hepatic veins which drain the central vein. It is now time for waste materials to be filtered and excreted from the body. The renal artery enters into the kidney at the level of first lumbar vertebra just below the superior mesenteric artery. As it enters the kidney it divides into branches: first segmental arteries, which divide into 2 or 3 lobar arteries, then divides again into interlobar arteries and they divide again into arcuate arteries, which leads into the interlobar artery, and forms the afferent arterioles. The kidneys main function is to maintain homeostasis in the body. By doing so the kidney must regulate water volume, blood volume, and interstitial fluid volume. The kidney also regulates normal blood pressure, regulates body pH, excretion of toxic substances, excretion of excess substances, and reabsorption of required substances that were removed in the glomerulus. We began our filtration in the nephron, where pressure is pushing fluid and solutes through the microscopic holes of the glomerular capillaries. As we travel to a portion of the nephron called the Loop of Henle we find various materials, liquid waste, and water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidney, 2014). Water re-absorption, along with certain materials, such as calcium and potassium takes place in the Loop of Henle. The large cells and proteins stay in the blood and the plasma is taken to the nearest proximal convoluted tubule. The proximal convoluted tubule runs down into the medulla into the Loop of Henle and then back to the farthest distal convoluted tubule to join with other tubules. As the kidney filters blood, they also create urine, which collects in the kidneys’ pelvis. The kidney pelvis is funnel-shaped structures that drain down tubes called ureters to the bladder. The ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra form the urinary tract and works to drain urine from the kidneys, store it, and then release it during urination. There is a 10 to 12 inch long pair of tubes that run on the left and right sides of the body called the ureters that carry urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder. The ends of the ureters extend just slightly into the urinary bladder and are sealed at the point of entry to the bladder by ureterovesical valves. The valves prevent urine from flowing back towards the kidneys (innerbody.com, 2013). Urine is now being stored in a sac-like hollow organ called the urinary bladder, located along the body’s midline at the inferior end of the pelvis. The urinary bladder has walls that are stretchable and can hold anywhere from 600 to 800 milliliters of urine. After urine is stored in the urinary bladder it passes through a tube that extends from the bladder to the exterior of the body called the urethra. The urine flow through the urethra is controlled by the internal and external urethral sphincter muscles. The internal urethral sphincter is made of smooth muscle and opens involuntarily when the bladder reaches a certain set of distention. The internal sphincter gives you that urge to urinate. The external urethral sphincter is made of skeletal muscle and may be opened to allow urine to pass through the urethra or may be held closed to delay urination.

The Fantastic Voyage

...The Fantastic Voyage Part II Cynthia Gomez Hello everyone, we are back for another exciting adventure, this one a little more appetizing than the last! Today’s Fantastic Voyage will follow the path of one tasty hamburger, some fatty french fries, and a cold and sweet root beer through a fifty-five year old man’s digestive, circulatory and urinary systems. I will be narrating all structures and functions as we explore; some imagery may be a little graphic, so hold on tight if you have a weak stomach! Here we commence our journey straight into the mouth of our hungry friend, making our descent into the first part of this nine meter alimentary canal. Make sure to hold on tight, for this hollow chamber lined with mucous membranes like the rest of the digestive tract is where mechanical digestion takes place almost instantly. The teeth begin to chew the bites of food, breaking them down into smaller pieces while the salivary glands begin to secrete enzymes called salivary amylase to begin the chemical process of breaking down carbohydrates (Cleveland Clinic, 2014). Now that the carbohydrates from the hamburger, fries and root beer have begun to be digested, they have taken the shape of a moist bolus allowing it to pass through the rest of the tract with less friction. Now we are about to enter the pharynx, a tube-like structure made of muscle behind the nasal cavities and mouth. Together with the bolus, we quickly cross the...

Fantastic Voyage Continues

...Fantastic Voyage Desire Fleming HS130, Section 03 Unit 9 Assignment Kaplan University 6/13/2014 Fantastic Voyage This essay will discuss the travels of a hamburger, french fries, and a root beer through the gastrointestinal tract of a 55 year old man. There will be a lot of sights to explore along the way. A description of the entire digestive process will take place. After the description, the voyage will continue on through the distal ilium through the mucosal membrane. Then travels will resume in the bloodstream via the superior mesenteric vein. All major passageways and structures will be described going through the superior mesenteric vein all the way to the left renal artery. Once the voyage gets to the kidney, the nearest nephron will be entered. All structures will be discussed passing through on the way to the urinary tract where the voyage will exit out through the urethra. This journey is quite far but very interesting. The gastrointestinal tract is also known as the alimentary canal. Its main function is to digest food through various muscle movements and hormone and enzyme release. The tract is around 20-25 feet in length (wisegeek, 2014). The gastrointestinal tract consists of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. It also consits of accessory organs which include the tongue, mouth glands, pancreas, liver, and the gallbladder. Each and every one of these parts work together to break down food so it can be easily...

Unit 9 Project – Fantastic Voyage

...Unit 9 Project – Fantastic Voyage HS130 - 04 June 19, 2012 Fantastic Voyage Good afternoon everyone!   This is Lisa back again with another top health news story. Once again I will be taking my mini-sub through the miniaturization process making us only 8 microns long and traveling through the human body. Today we will be swallowed by a 55 year old man, Mr. Smith, who is currently eating a hamburger, French fries, and enjoying a nice cold root beer. Our goal today is to monitor the digestion of Mr. Smith’s meal through the gastrointestinal tract. As we progress through the body, I will be describing all the major structures that we go through as well as describing what happens to the meal as it goes through the digestion process. Let’s get started. We are going to begin our journey by watching how the food is digested via the gastrointestinal pathway and the urinary pathway. Starting with the digestive system, the food will begin to be digested in the mouth where food is acted upon by saliva and enzymes like amylase (WiseGeek, Digestive System, 2012). The brain has a reflex that triggers the flow of saliva into our mouths when we see or even think of food (WiseGeek, Digestive System, 2012). There are three major salivary glands that are involved in this process: the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. These glands function to secrete saliva into our mouths in order to keep it moist, lubricate and bind our food to begin the digestion process, and...

I would be sick to think of all of you being sent to the streets for lack of money to pay our landlords. Please remain strong and know I am doing everything I can to get you out of Ireland as hastily as the Lord will allow. My dear family there is something that I hasten to share, but I feel as though I must make you aware that there is much truth to the stories we have all listened to about the voyage across the seas. The ships are very crowded and there are not enough provisions onboard for everybody. The conditions onboard made living precarious, and many passengers became very ill and others succumbed to death (526). I was one of the fortunate ones, I was selected to work below decks and assist in the steam rooms. My keen knowledge of machinery is fortunate, and when a steam valve ruptured I was able to fix it. The Captain, himself, sought me out to relay his gratitude for saving the voyage. When we arrived in port, he introduced me to a man of business, and I now have a respectable job here in the city of Manhattan. I am aiding in the cultivating of ideas to make ships travel faster. Since being here, my ideas have increased the ships speed by 12 knots. The owner of the business has provided me a place to live on his own property and we work together for many hours developing new...

Modern Day Allusions

...A Modern Day Allusion The Elizabethan era, once filled with long dresses, courtship and theatre has now transitioned into a time when less clothing is considered better and with some teenagers, dating is a quick as a game of musical chairs, switching partners when the music stops. Teenagers are more interested in social media and texting than interacting with other people. There a two allusions that can be switched into Hamlet to allow it to appeal to a young and modern audience. Updating the term Termagant and Hercules could appeal to a more modern audience. Termagant was originally “a deity erroneously ascribed to Islam by medieval European Christians and represented in early English drama as a violent character.” This original allusion is used to describe a nasty or violent person and in Hamlet is it used in Act III Scene ii, before Hamlet performs his play. It is used in the context of “I would have such a fellow whipped for o'erdoing Termagant. It out-Herods Herod.” Hamlet was telling the actors not to overdo their performance and to not have violent outbursts. Many teenagers would not know what this word meant unless they had to look it up for a project. The word bully would be a better fit for a modern audience, because for years, teenagers and kids have been taught about the definition of a bully and what it means to bully another person. The new line would read as “I would have such a fellow whipped for o’erdoing a bully. It out-Herods Herod“ By making this replacement...

...Running head: WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Popular Literature Paper SOC/105 October 10 2012 WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 The following paper will describe to the reader a brief overview, followed by a little bit about the author, and then explain how this type of popular fiction fits with other literature in the same genre. Comic books of yesterday and today have introduced a lot of new and interesting characters. The character that I selected to right about is the Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk was introduced to the world in a comic book back in 1962. This character, Bruce Banner, was a scientist that was working with atomic weapons when an atomic bomb went off and exposed him to an enormous amount of gamma radiation. When he was exposed to the radiation, it turned him into a savage and extremely strong animal of a human being. Normally when Mr. Banner becomes enraged the Incredible Hulk is exposed and only when the Incredible Hulk calms down does he turn back into Bruce Banner. Although the Hulk's color has varied just a bit over the time that he has existed, the majority of the time he is the favorable and most popular green color. Whenever Bruce Banner turns into the Incredible Hulk, he is then capable of immense strength, minus the brains. Strong emotions such as anger, terror and grief are also triggers for...

What Literacy Means to Alexie

...What does Literacy mean to Alexie? It all started out with a comic book; a superman comic book that opened up three year old Alexie’s eyes to success. Along with learning to read by himself by looking at comic books and trying to associate words with pictures came different struggles, his parent’s not being able to afford great books, spending his whole day trying to learn how to make the words become real to him, and of course the biggest struggle; his peers making fun of him for being smart. For Alexie to go through all of these struggles alone; learning to read and write must mean something more than just scanning through words on a page or writing the alphabet mixed up in different combinations, it must mean something much greater. The first thing that shows that Literacy means something more to Alexie is that it means being sufficiently educated with his writing and reading skills. Alexie’s wild adventure began with opening a comic book back when he was three years old. He had tried to associate the words and the pictures to try to teach him-self how to read. To this day, he cannot recall exactly what the comic book was, but he was indeed successful. After trying to read that comic book, Alexie wanted more, he didn’t want to learn how to read; in his mind, he had to. Alexie’s Father was an avid reader and I believe that Alexie got the idea to teach him-self to read because he wanted to be just like his father. The family was not rich; very far from it, but Alexie’s...

First Week of School

...Reflection #1 Let me just start with saying that high school is completely different from college. I am looking forward to finishing my high school career at SCFCS and I am excited on what comes to this new adventure. I have learned a new couple tricks at the seminar which will be in use for all my subjects, I also have figured out how to do finish all my assignments on time, and last but not the least just some challenges I am trying to overcome. Last week on Thursday on the 3rd of September, a lady from the SCF library came in to talk to the class. I learned a couple things from her. I already knew coming in how citations are very critical in college but I did not know how to cite properly. The staff are experts when it comes to that, they are willing to help us cite properly. Another thing I found very helpful is that we already have $5 dollars in our account that we can use for free printing, I thought that was pretty nice of the school to do that. Mostly I was very intrigued about the Data Base on their website. It is very helpful for any kind of research papers, whether it is English, Science, or even History. The thing that is really cool about the database is that they are ALL reliable sources. I actually already used it a few days ago for my English paper and it definitely saved me a lot of time. Taking 6 subjects all at once equals tons of endless homework. I was pretty stressed out the first week of school because I kept thinking to myself that it is IMPOSSIBLE...
