Early on in the novel Katherine Boo shows us that corruption is an everyday difficulty that many of the people from the slums of Mumbai face. Mr. Kamble, a man living in the Annawadi slum, has a bad heart and needs a heart valve replacement in order to get his job back with the sanitation department. He goes to one of Mumbai’s public hospitals where the operation of a heart valve replacement should cost very little but “the hospital surgeons wanted under-the-table money. Sixty thousand rupees, said the surgeon at Sion Hospital. The doctor at Cooper Hospital wanted more” (24). Mr. Kamble would have been able to go back to work and provided for his family if these doctors would have been doing their jobs and not trying to take advantage of a man in desperate times. Mr. Kamble did everything he could to try and raise the money for his surgery: he took out loans, begged on the streets, asked his friends for donations, but in the end he wasn’t able to raise the amount the doctors had asked for which eventually killed him. There are television and newspaper stories nearly every day about all kinds of corporate schemes and scams. Behind every fraud is a person or a group of people who has taken what is not theirs to take. Some of those people intended to steal they just never thought they would get caught. Others were pulled into the original crime or some aspect of the cover-up and before they knew it they were labeled a co-conspirator. This study will examine the people behind the much publicized fraud scheme at HealthSouth. Some did not set out to commit white-collar crime but found themselves as defendants in criminal trials for fraud. In the HealthSouth case in observation, real life examples of people who were "just doing their job" but at some point crossed the line from law-abiding citizens to law-breaking villains. Seemingly small compromises in ethics and morality led to a full-scale commitment to fraud. Finally, we will conclude that nobody sets out in their career to end up in prison cleaning toilets and on the front page of the Wall Street Journal after they are arrested for fraud. The present research categorises selected variables as work and family related factors to study work life balance. This paper analyses the determinants of work and life imbalance with respect to male and female university teachers. A total of 146 teacher’s responses from both private and public sector universities are included in the study. Statistical analysis reveals that partner support, colleague support and job resources are positively associated with the work life balance whereas unfair criticism at job is negatively associated with work life balance. Independent sample t-test is used to analyse the effect of independent variables on work life balance with respect to male and female university teachers. The variables, partner support, childcare responsibilities, elder dependency, and colleagues support have different effect when analysed by male and female university teachers as independent samples.
