When you hear the word logistics one of the companies that probably come to your mind is FedEx. It has become worldwide freight carrier and package handler that has become a major competitor in the logistics market. Since 1973, FedEx has offered express shipping and is still today’s biggest express transportation company. FedEx is among the biggest names in the industry along with DHL and UPS. FedEx is a corporation that offers stock which gives investors a chance to gain a return on FedEx’s success. They have assets totaling over $24 billon and produce more than $39 billion annually. It employs roughly 290,000 people globally as well. Throughout the years, FedEx has acquired many companies which have helped it grow and succeed even during hard economic times. Now, FedEx is a multinational company that is services hundreds of countries.
FedEx is a corporation that was founded in 1998 with the acquisition of Caliber Systems Inc. FedEx specializes in logistics which is currently a booming market. Prior to the acquisition, FedEx was known as FDX Corporation. After the acquisition, FedEx began to offer new services on top of their express shipping. This was because Caliber Systems offered a variety of services that FDX lacked. This included, a small-package ground service, an expedited shipping program, a less than truckload freight carrier in the Western United States, air freight to the Caribbean, and a solutions department focused on logistics and technology. All of these services were operated by different companies, but FedEx served as the umbrella corporation. All of these services were renamed and this is where FedEx Ground, FedEx Custom Critical, and FedEx Global Logistics sprouted from.
