Felisa Rincón de Gautier was one of Puerto Rico’s most remarkable citizens. As a young woman, she was active in the campaign to secure voting rights for women, and she later became only the fifth woman to register to vote. Rincón de Gautier had an interest in politics that led her to help organize a political party in Puerto Rico. As a leader, she advocated for the rights of the poor and fought to get support programs for children and the elderly. Her work on behalf of the poor earned her their love and respect.

In 1946, Rincón de Gautier became the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico’s largest city. In a time when it was unusual for women to hold elected positions, she worked hard to earn the trust of the people. Known to them simply as Doña Fela,

In 1953, the League of American Women gave her its Woman of the Year Award. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. There have been some arguments that Puerto Rico should be the 51st United State. Puerto Rican’s have their own independent government and control of its internal affairs but they do not have total control of foreign affairs, trade and military.
