It surely needs courage to jump in free fall from space. Felix Baumgartner made history in 2012 when he jumped out of his capsule from 120 000 feet of altitude. Was this an important event that we need to remember? In this essay, I will argue that this mission was not so important. Some people object that he broke a record and has break the speed of sound in free fall, but I will argue that it has not changed a lot of things in the world.

First of all, this event, for me, is not very important because it has not had a big repercussion in the world. What I mean is that yes we have talked about this mission for a short period of time after he realised it, but after we did not hear about this. How does this action affect the world? It did not help for other missions or scientists research. For other people, this event is important because he has broken a record and broke the spead of sound. They say it is a very impressive event and that he has succesfully finished his mission while a lot of other people failed. I agree with these points but for me this event can’t be placed in the major events of 2012 because if we compare this event to the curiosity land rover, this achievement is much less important for the future. There are way more things that we can discover with the curiosity rover on Mars than a jump from the space. This event was a good one for the show, but it won’t help more the planet and the humanity in the future. This is why I think that in the 2012 year, the stratos mission does not have his place in the most important events. …show more content…

...than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers surprisingly simple tricks for dealing with black swans and ben efiting from them. Elegant, startling, and universal in its applica tions, The Black Swan will change the way you look at the world. Taleb is a vastly entertaining writer, with wit, irreverence, and unusual stories to tell. He has a polymathic command of subjects ranging from cognitive science...
