Ferguson Missouri

1. When I think of “Ferguson, Missouri” I think of an unnecessary attack on America as a whole. To burn and loot a community that was destroyed by the people who live in it does not make sense to me no matter what the situation. Despite if the verdict was right or wrong it is still no reason the loot an entire city. America is a beautiful country and with all the police and citizen drama we are turning it inside out. If the problem started because of violence and people getting hurt, why would we “fix” the problem with more violence instead of going about it in a more proper and professional manner?

Privilege Relating to Ferguson Missouri

...Nathan Salupo Professor Vann WMST 231-001 Privilege For my mini paper topic I focused on privilege. Before enrolling in this class I had no idea of what privileges were, who had which privileges, how we get our privileges, and the role that privileges play in our everyday lives. The topic of privileges shows up in Shaw and Lee chapter two which is the main focus. Privilege as defined by Shaw and Lee is defined as “Advantages that people have by virtue of their status or position in society.” For example males have advantages that are inherent just because they are males that females do not have. In the case of my topic I focused mainly on the privilege that white people have over black people. In early August in Ferguson, Missouri, 18 year old Michael Brown, an unarmed African American male was shot multiple times and killed after a confrontation with a cop. The officer, Darren Wilson, drove by the boys walking in the road and told them to move onto the sidewalk. Wilson then reversed his car back to the two boys where there was an apparent confrontation as Wilson recognized Brown as a suspect for a convenience store robbery days prior and the boys split off running in separate directions. It later became known that the robbery was not the reasons for the encounter that led to Brown’s death. (Washington Post) When Brown was killed there was a public outcry for him because he had been unarmed and was shot by a white police officer, Darren Wilson after what witnesses...

Timothy Gettle Research Paper

...Timothy Gettle. I do not know his middle name, age, or birthday. A majority of the time we spend together is spent getting on each other's nerves. Yet, if someone were to ask me who has most impacted me during my high school career I would without a doubt respond with his name. In the time I have spent with Mr. Gettle, he has taught me how to conquer my fears, how to be a leader , and most importantly how to be confident in myself. It all began in my eighth grade year taking the required Agricultural Science class taught by Mr. Timothy Gettle. At this point in my life I was incredibly shy and probably said a total of two words the first week in his class, Then, it came time for our first assignment, Every student had to do a speech in front of the entire class. I was deathly afraid, as I am sure most of the others were as well. Afterall, public speaking is one of the most common fears. It was awful, and even though that one experience did not cure me of my fear, Mr. Gettle made me do it again and again. Eventually, I even started doing speech competitions, Mr. Gettle helped me overcome my fear and open my eyes to the fact that what I thought to be terrifying was not so bad afterall. At the beginning of my ninth grade year, I made the decision to join FFA. FFA is an agricultural leadership organization that with the help of Mr. Gettle as my advisor has literally changed my life, as cheesy as that sounds. FFA has allowed me countless opportunities to better myself as a person...

Literature of American Midwest

...Midterm: Joy Harjo English 375: Literature of the American Midwest Joy Harjo Can we separate the artist from the art? If you read something written by Hitler, could you really understand his intent without knowing what the man himself was about? An individual may read thousands of books, articles or poems during their lifetime, but how many of us really try to understand what sort of background or values influence what we are reading? There is a reason that the Literature of the American Midwest is a collection. Each story or author has something in common that in some way has connected them to writing about what we define as the American Midwest. “If the Midwest is to act as a region, it must know what it is. It must define itself. It needs a unifying portrait, a communal myth. To paint this portrait, we look to our writers, especially our novelists (Longworth, 2010, pg. 1).” Joy Harjo is an example of a writer whose work uniquely defines the Midwest through her heritage, values, accomplishments, and social and political views. Joy Harjo is a particularly interesting writer whose accomplishments and values can help you to understand a great deal about how and why her writings define her as much as she defines them. “Joy Harjo was born in 1951 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Native American and Canadian ancestry. Strongly influenced by her Muskogee Creek heritage, feminist and social concerns, and her background in the arts, Harjo frequently incorporates Native American...
